    Notes: Dispersion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in aqueous methanol solution was carried out using poly[(propionylimno)ethylene] (PPIE) as a steric stabilizer. The dispersion polymerization in the aqueous methanol solution (methanol: water = 70:30 wt.-%) gave monodisperse particles in the micrometer range. The diameter of the particles decreased as the molecular weight and the concentration of PPIE increased. Effects of other polymerization parameters, such as monomer and initiator concentrations, solvent composition, and addition of methyl 2-methylpropionate, on the size and size distribution of the particles were examined.

    Notes: A convenient pressure apparatus was designed for crystallization of high polymers under hydrostatic pressure up to 5000 atm. Melt crystallization as well as heat treatment under various temperatures and pressures was carried out on several polymers, and the effects of pressure on the molecular and crystal structures of the samples are discussed. Heat treatment of syndiotactic polypropylene under high pressure yields a new crystal modification rather than the previously known helix and planar zigzag modifications. Of the three modifications of poly(vinylidene fluoride), modification III was found as a high-pressure phase for specimens in the unoriented state, while modification I was obtained as the most stable one on heat treatment of oriented specimens under high pressure. Heat treatment under high pressure converts ordinary isotactic poly-4-methylpentene-1 with a lower density than the noncrystalline value, to a new crystal modification with higher density. As is reasonable, the dense modification is stable in a high-pressure range. For these three cases, the orientation of specimens was found to remain unchanged during the transitions, which must therefore occur in the solid state.

    Notes: ESR spectra of l-cyano-2-(trimethylsilyl)ethyl and related radicals were recorded. Temperature dependent ESR spectra of these radicals revealed that electron-releasing trimethylsilylmethyl and electron-withdrawing cyano groups synergetically functioned to stabilize the radical centers due to σ-π captodative effects.

    Notes: This article describes the preparation of micron-size monodisperse polymer particles by dispersion copolymerization of styrene with a poly(2-oxazoline) macromonomer in an aqueous ethanol solution. The macromonomer acted as a comonomer as well as a stabilizer. The diameter of the particles increased as the concentration of the macromonomer decreased. The higher the molecular weight of the macromonomer, the smaller the particle size. The copolymerization in the solvent containing higher water content gave smaller polymer particles. Under the condition giving the monodisperse particles, the particles volume increased linearly with the yield of the particles. From ESCA analysis of the particle surface, poly(2-oxazoline) chains were enriched on the surface. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: A theoretical model for the process of bubble and drop formation in flowing liquids, applicable for both terrestrial and microgravity environments, has been developed by using a force balance. The contact angle variation at the nozzle due to the bubble motion and the added mass coefficient of the bubble moving through a pipe have been theoretically analyzed, considering bubble motions during its expansion and detachment stages. Predictions of bubble size of the model show satisfactory agreement with available experimental results in the case of normal gravity. The effects of the nondimensional variables on bubble and drop size are evaluated in microgravity conditions. In microgravity, the bubble is detached from the nozzle only by the liquid flow drag, and in the region of low liquid velocity the bubble size becomes much larger than that in normal gravity.

    Notes: An original technique for simultaneous measurements of concentration and velocity in a turbulent liquid flow with and without a chemical reaction is developed by combining a two-component He-Ne laser Doppler velocimeter with a Ar+ laserinduced fluorescence technique. The mass flux and eddy diffusivity of mass are estimated from the simultaneous measurements of concentration and velocity in a liquid shear-free mixing layer downstream of a turbulence grid. The results show that the present measuring technique enables us to simultaneously measure velocity and concentration with high resolutions and that the approximation of the mean gradient diffusion causes about 10% error in estimating the mass flux in a reacting liquid flow.

    Notes: The kinetics of the bioleaching of ZnS concentrate by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was studied in a well-mixed batch reactor. Experimental studies were made at 30°C and pH 2.2 on adsorption of the bacteria to the mineral, ferric iron leaching, and bacterial leaching. The adsorption rate of the bacteria was fairly rapid in comparison with the bioleaching rate, indicating that the bacterial adsorption is at equilibrium during the leaching process. The adsorption equilibrium data were correlated by the Langmuir isotherm, which is a useful means for predicting the number of bacteria adsorbed on the mineral surface. The rate of chemical leaching varied with the concentration of ferric iron, and the first-order reaction rate constant was determined. Bioleaching in an iron-containing medium was found to take place by both direct bacterial attack on the sulfide mineral and indirect attack via ferric iron. In this case, the ferric iron was formed from the reaction product (ferrous iron) through the biological oxidation reaction. To develop rate expressions for the kinetics of bacterial growth and zinc leaching, the two bacterial actions were considered. The key parameters appearing in the rate equations, the growth yield and specific growth rate of adsorbed bacteria, were evaluated by curve fitting using the experimental data. This kinetic model allowed us to predict the liquid-phase concentrations of the leached zinc and free cells during the batch bioleaching process.
