Beschreibung: A study is made of the propagation of acoustic waves in a semi-infinite expanse of radiating gas on one side of an infinite, plane, radiating wall. A solution is found, in particular, for the case of sinusoidal oscillations in both position and temperature of the wall. The solution is based on a single linear integro-differential equation that plays the same role here as does the classical wave equation in equilibrium acoustic theory. The solution is applicable throughout the range from a completely transparent to a completely opaque gas and from very low to very high temperatures. The solution appears, in general, as the sum of two types of travelling waves: (1) an essentially classical sound-wave, but with a slightly altered speed and a small amount of damping and (2) a radiation-induced wave whose speed and damping may be either large or small, depending on the temperature and absorptivity of the gas. Since the waves are coupled, both types will usually be present together, even in the special cases of pure motion or pure temperature variation of the wall. © 1962, Cambridge University Press. Beschreibung: The use of coherence functions for identifying the relative contributions of multiple dynamic inputs to the measured vibration response of spacecraft components on a practical, complex structure was investigated. Data were generated by applying simultaneous vibratory and acoustic excitation to a test model (a modified Titan instrumentation truss). Up to three inputs were used. In some cases mutually coherent inputs were generated. A digital computer program was written to analyze the test data, using an approach based on iterative computational algorithms. The results showed that the coherence function technique was effective in identifying and evaluating sources of excitation, for both independent and coherent inputs. The effect of varying the number of data samples used in the necessary averaging process was briefly investigated.

Beschreibung: The current predicted acoustic environment for the shuttle orbiter payload bay will produce random vibration environments for payload components and subsystems which potentially will result in design, weight and cost penalties if means of protecting the payloads are not developed. Results are presented of a study to develop, through design and cost effectiveness trade studies, conceptual noise suppression device designs for space shuttle payloads. The impact of noise suppression on environmental levels and associated test costs, and on test philosophy for the various payload classes is considered with the ultimate goal of reducing payload test costs. Conclusions and recommendations are presented.

Beschreibung: Analytical and test techniques are discussed. Areas in which hindsight indicated erroneous, redundant, or unnecessarily severe design and test specifications are identified. Recommendations are made for improvements in the dynamic design and criteria philosophy, aimed at reducing costs for payloads.

Beschreibung: The author has identified the following significant results. Winter and spring near-shore ice conditions were analyzed for the Beaufort Sea 1973-77, and the Chukchi Sea 1973-76. LANDSAT imagery was utilized to map major ice features related to regional ice morphology. Significant features from individual LANDSAT image maps were combined to yield regional maps of major ice ridge systems for each year of study and maps of flaw lead systems for representative seasons during each year. These regional maps were, in turn, used to prepare seasonal ice morphology maps. These maps showed, in terms of a zonal analysis, regions of statistically uniform ice behavior. The behavioral characteristics of each zone were described in terms of coastal processes and bathymetric configuration.

Beschreibung: Data measurement and interpretation techniques were defined for application to the first few space shuttle flights, so that the dynamic environment could be sufficiently well established to be used to reduce the cost of future payloads through more efficient design and environmental test techniques. It was concluded that: (1) initial payloads must be given comprehensive instrumentation coverage to obtain detailed definition of acoustics, vibration, and interface loads, (2) analytical models of selected initial payloads must be developed and verified by modal surveys and flight measurements, (3) acoustic tests should be performed on initial payloads to establish realistic test criteria for components and experiments in order to minimize unrealistic failures and retest requirements, (4) permanent data banks should be set up to establish statistical confidence in the data to be used, (5) a more unified design/test specification philosophy is needed, (6) additional work is needed to establish a practical testing technique for simulation of vehicle transients.

Beschreibung: The procedure used to derive component-level pyro shock specifications for the Viking Lander Capsule (VLC) is described. Effects of shock path distance and mechanical joints between the device and the point at which the environment is to be estimated are accounted for in the method. The validity of the prediction technique was verified by a series of shock tests on a full-scale structural model of the lander body.

Beschreibung: The problem of determining the relative contribution of simultaneous acoustic and mechanical inputs to the response of structures under combined dynamic loads was studied. An analytical technique developed by Bendat for calculating ordinary, partial, and multiple coherence functions, using an iterative nonmatrix approach was applied to data obtained from laboratory tests on a complex structural assembly. Testing was performed in an acoustically 'live' room. Up to three random inputs, having similar spectral content and varying degrees of mutual coherence, and a single output were used. Stationary and nonstationary inputs were used. It was concluded that the technique provided an effective method of identifying sources of dynamic excitation and evaluating their relative contributions to the measured output at structural resonances, for stationary random inputs. An attempt to apply the technique to nonstationary inputs did not yield consistent results.
