Notes: Summary A study of genetic distance has been carried out between 9 Aboriginal tribes in the Northern Territory of Australia. The “B” statistic of Balakrishnan and Sanghvi (1968) was employed and the analysis was based on the variability demonstrated in 8 blood groups, serum protein and enzyme systems. The genetic distance relationships were found to be correlated with linguistic differences amongst the tribes as well as with the geographic distance separating them.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Fünf Gruppen indischer Muslims wurden auf G-6-PD Mangel und Farbenblindheit hin untersucht.
Notes: Summary 5 groups of Indian Muslims have been studied for G-6-PD deficiency and colour blindness. It was observed that no colour-blind person was found in Moplahs and Bohras. The incidence of G-6-PD deficiency was 2% in Khojas and mixed Muslim group. Findings are discussed in the light of available data on Indian populations.

Notes: Abstract We study a class of stochastic optimization problems in which the state as well as the observation spaces are permitted to be (Hilbert spaces) of non-finite dimension. Although there have been previous attempts in the Hilbert space setting, our results, techniques, as well as applications, are totally different. We initiate the use of Gauss measure on a Hilbert space even though it is only finitely additive; and an associated theory of white noise, in contrast to the Wiener process theory, which is novel even in the finite dimensional case. We only treat time-invariant systems, but no strong ellipticity or coercivity conditions are used; we exploit the theory of semigroups of operators in contrast to the Lions-Magenes theory. A key result involves a far-reaching generalization of the Factorization theorem of Krein. We apply the results to the problem of boundary observation and control for partial differential equations. By the creation of a special state space, we can apply the theory to problems in which the state equations are finitedimensional but the noise does not have a rational spectrum. In a final section, we present a stochastic theory for inverse problems (System Identification) in the Hilbert space setting. The basic theoretical problem is the calculation of R-N derivatives for finitely additive measures. A fundamental result concerns Identifiability; in particular the identifiability of diffusion coefficients from boundary data is treated here for the first time.

Notes: Abstract Species belonging to the genus Nausitora (Bivalvia - Teredinidae) are generally confined to brackish waters. In the Cochin backwaters, a tidal estuary on the southwest coast of India, this genus is represented by the species N. hedleyi Schepman. Fresh settlement of the species in the area is noticed only during the period of low salinity, though the species of found to exist, throughout the year. Tests conducted to ascertain the effect of salinity changes on the activity of the borer showed that though it can endure a wide range, the optimum salinity range for early development was from 11.24–14.54%.

Notes: Abstract 1. Previous work on the methods employed for the determination of the breeding season of shipworms is briefly reviewed. 2. The method adopted for studying the reproductive cycle by using the “gonad index” is described. 3. The reproductive cycle of Nausitora hedleyi is described in detail based on a study of the gonad index of different sexes collected at monthly intervals from the estuarine environment of Cochin harbour. 4. The fact that breeding is restricted as marked by seasonal activity is shown from the size and activity of the gonad during the different months of the year. 5. The environment, and the hydrographic conditions prevailing in the habitat of N. hedleyi in the Cochin harbour are described.

Notes: Abstract The pattern of growth of the total population of Musculista arcuatula over a period of thirteen months was built up plotting length-percentage frequency histograms each month. From the shifting of the modes it was noticed that the increase in size from November to December was 2 mm, the growth during December to January 3 mm. In February the growth was nil. In March the size increasing by 6 mm and in April by 1 mm, when mortality of the largest size groups started to get completed in May. In June a conspicuous mode appeared at 9 mm, grew 1 mm in July, 2 mm in August and 3 mm in September. Growth remained stationary in October and November. The rate of increase in length was found to follow exponential law. The growth rate of this bivalve goes on increasing at a steady pace, the rate being 1.086 mm per month. The mean size of the females was found to be significantly larger than that of the males. The proportion of the males in the size group 3 mm to 10 mm was found to be significantly larger than in the entire population. But in the larger size groups there was no difference in the number of males and females and the proportion was almost 1:1. Throughout the year only one age class was recognizable in the natural population. There appears to be an excessive post reproductive mortality of adults rendering the population during most of the year of a single age class recruited through the various months of spawning. The maximum longevity was found to be at the most 18 months.

Notes: Abstract The seasonal fluctuations in the incidence of planktonic organisms and the larval forms of certain crustaceans such as crabs, barnacles and post larvae of prawns in the plankton of the south-west coast of India have been followed for a period of three years from 1963. South-west monsoon period is the least productive period for zooplankton in this area. Brachyuran zoeae, post larvae of prawns and barnacle nauplii occur in the plankton throughout the year with distinct peaks for different groups. The zoeae ofUca annulipes occur in the plankton from September to May with a peak during November–December. The zoeae ofPortunus pelagicus are present in the plankton from September to June and their abundance is in February–March. The post larvae ofMetapenaeus affinis are found in the inshore plankton from November to June with the peak in March. The nauplii ofBalanus amphitrite communis occur in the plankton in all the months of the year, the peak incidence has been during November January. The zoeae ofU. annulipes are found to tolerate better the medium saline conditions. Of the ecological factors, salinity of the ambient water and the availability of planktonic food for the larvae seem to influence the seasonal fluctuations of these crustacean larvae in this locality.

Notes: Abstract The timber-boring isopods (family Sphaeromidae) namely Sphaeroma terebrans, S. annandalei, S.a. travancorensis and S. triste occurring in Indian waters were studied for primary and secondary sex characters. A concise comparative account of the primary and secondary sex characters such as penial sacs, “appendix masculina” and oostegites has been given. The sexual dimorphism exhibited by the seventh pair of peraeopods of S. terebrans is explained fully. The sexual disparity in the body length of two species of Sphaeroma has also been described.
