    Description: The threshold mass for the unambiguous spectroscopic detection of low mass companions to solar type stars is defined here as the time when the maximum acceleration in the stellar radial velocity due to the Doppler reflex of the companion exceeds the apparent acceleration produced by changes in convection. An apparent acceleration of 11 m/s/yr in integrated sunlight was measured using near infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. This drift in the apparent solar velocity is attributed to a lessening in the magnetic inhibition of granular convection as solar minimum approaches. The threshold mass for spectroscopic detection of companions to a one solar mass star is estimated at below one Jupiter mass.

    Description: Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of 416 radio sources with declinations north of -45 deg have been conducted at frequencies of 2.3 and 8.4 GHz. At 2.3 GHz, 323 of 391 radio sources observed were detected with a fringe spacing of 3 milliarcsec and a detection limit of about 0.1 Jy. At 8.4 GHz, 278 of 416 radio sources were detected with a fringe spacing of 1 milliarcsec and a detection limit of about 0.1 Jy. This survey was conducted primarily to determine the strength of compact components at 8.4 GHz for radio sources previously detected with VLBI at 2.3 GHz. Compact extragalactic radio sources with strong correlated flux densities at both frequencies are used to form a high-accuracy reference frame.

    Description: Differential VLBI was simultaneously performed on the source pair GC 1342 + 662 and GC 1342 + 663 (4.4-arcminute separation) using S-band on the Goldstone/Madrid baseline. These measurements were acquired on two separate observing sessions: 30 December 1982 and 14 May 1983. The change in separation of GC 1342 + 662 relative to GC 1342 + 663 between the two epochs was 0.03 + or - 0.08 milliarcsecond. The differences of the relative position measurements between epochs of GC 1342 + 662 relative to GC 1342 + 663 were -0.29 + or - 0.05 milliarcsecond in right ascension and 0.14 + or 0.09 milliarcsecond in declination. These measurements demonstrate submilliarcsecond accuracy and repeatability. The discrepancies outside of the formal uncertainties could be attributed to the intrinsic properties of the sources such as structure and to a lesser probability, proper motion. These discrepancies could also be attributed to excursions in UT1-UTC of about four times the quoted BIH uncertainty.

    Description: Earlier airborne studies of the infrared bands between 5 and 8 microns have now been extended to a sample of southern sources selected from the IRAS Low Resolution Spectra (LRS) atlas. The correlation between the strongest bands at 6.2 and 7.7 microns is now based on a total sample of 40 sources and is very strong. A new emission band at 5.2 microns, previously predicted for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), is recognized in 27 sources; it too correlates with the dominant 7.7 micron band, showing that the 5.2 micron feature also belongs to the generic spectrum of PAH features at 3.3, 5.6, 6.2, 6.2, 7.7, 8.7, 11.3, and 12.7 microns. Sufficient sources are had now to define the relative strengths of most of these bands in three separate nebular environments: planetaries, H II regions, and reflection nebulae. Significant variations are detected in the generic spectra of PAHs in these different environments which are echoed by variations in the exact wavelength of the strong 7.7 micron peak. The earlier suggestion that, in planetaries, the fraction of total emission observed by IRAS that is carried by the PAH emissions is correlated with nebular gas-phase C/O ratio is supported by the addition of newly-observed southern planetaries, including the unusually carbon-rich (WC10) nebular nuclei. These (WC10) nuclei also exhibit a strong plateau of emission linking the 6.2 and 7.7 micron features.

    Description: The post perihelion results of a 1 to 20 micrometer infrared monitoring program of Comet Halley are presented. These results complement previous observations of the pre-perihelion passages of Halley. The observations cover the time period of Mar. 1986 to the present time. During the time the comet was observable, two or more observations were obtained per month. The most interesting results were: (1) a detectable change in the J-H and H-K colors of Halley, and (2) a search for a nucleus rotation at J during 20 Feb. to 10 Mar. was unsuccessful. The perihelion J-H and K-K colors were constant at 0.48 + or - 0.01 and 0.17, respectively. A preliminary reduction of the data is given. It is concluded that the colors were at first similar to pre-perihelion and then changed from July onward to be bluer and more similar to the solar colors. This suggests that a change may have occurred in the composition of the dust coma of Halley in July 1986.

    Description: Measurement strategies are now being planned for using the Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) to observe the asteroid Hestia, and the nucleus, and the gas and dust in the coma of comet P/Tempel 2 as part of the Comet Rendezvous Asteroid Flyby (CRAF) mission. The spectral range of VIMS will cover wavelengths from 0.35 to 5.2 micrometers, with a spectral resolution of 11 nm from 0.35 to 2.4 micrometers and of 22 nm from 2.4 to 5.2 micrometers. The instantaneous field of view (IFOV) provided by the foreoptics is 0.5 milliradians, and the current design of the instrument provides for a scanning secondary mirror which will scan a swath of length 72 IFOVs. The CRAF high resolution scan platform motion will permit slewing VIMS in a direction perpendicular to the swath. This enables the building of a two dimensional image in any or all wavelength channels. Important measurements of the dust coma will include the onset of early coma activity, the mapping of gas and dust jets and correlations with active nucleus areas, observations of the dust coma from various scattering phase angles, coverage of the low wavelength portion of the thermal radiation, and the 3.4 micrometer hydrocarbon emission. A description of the VIMS instrument is presented.

    Description: The data concerning low resolution airborne spectra from 5 to 8 microns available for a sample of 40 sources selected from the Infrared Astronomy Satellite low resolution spectral Atlas with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features, are discussed. A new emission band at 5.2 microns, previously predicted for PAHs, was found in 33 sources; it also correlates with the 7.7 microns band. This extends the spectrum of narrow observed PAH features to 3.3, 5.2, 5.6, 6.2, 6.9, 7.7, 8.7, 11.3, and 12.7 microns. From the data the relative strengths of most of these bands are defined in three separate nebular environments: planetaries, H II regions, and reflection nebulae. The differences in the PAHs spectra in those environments are analyzed.

    Description: Initial results are presented of a program to map the centers of galaxies in the mid-infrared using the NASA-MSFC 20 pixel bolometer array. Maps at 10.8 micrometer of the galaxies NGC 5236 (M82), NGC 1808, NGC 4536, and NGC 4527 reveal complex emitting regions ranging in size from 500 pc to 2 kpc. The infrared spatial distributions generally resemble those in the visible and radio. In all cases a large fraction of the IRAS 12 micrometer flux originates in spatial structures prominent in the maps.

    Description: The H-II region W51 has been mapped in the near-infrared H and K wavebands with a resolution of about 6 arcsec over an area of about 14 sq arcsec. The W51 IRS 1 source has been resolved into six components, and an arc-like extension of small H-II regions is found that seems to parallel the edge of the molecular cloud. Measurements of the fluxes and extinctions of these sources are presented. A close correspondence is noted between the present K maps and the radio maps of Scott (1978).

    Description: VLBI observations of the strong radio source 1934-638 show it to be a binary with a component separation of 42.0 + or - 0.2 mas, a position angle of 90.5 + or - 1 deg, and component sizes of about 2.5 mas. The results imply the presence of an additional elongated component aligned with, and between, the compact double components. The sources's almost equal compact double structure, peaked spectrum, low variability, small polarization, and particle-dominated radio lobes suggests that it belongs to the class of symmetric compact double sources identified by Phillips and Mutel (1980, 1981, 1982).
