Notes: A modification of van der Waals and Platteeuw's (1959) hydrate equilibrium model which incorporates the effect of spherical asymmetry is developed. A corresponding states correlation is used to predict the deviation of Langmuir constants from ideal values. In this model the Kihara parameters obtained from hydrate equilibrium data agree well with those obtained from virial coefficient data.

Notes: Simulations of enhanced paraxylene selectivity in a fixed-bed reactor are presented in this paper. The primary reaction of alkylation of toluene with methanol and the secondary isomerization of the xylene products occurring inside zeolite catalysts ZSM-5 are considered. The selectivity of paraxylene is enhanced due to the great difference between the effective diffusivities of xylene isomers. Such enhancement is found to decrease with toluene conversion along the reactor. Behaviors of intracrystal concentration profiles of three xylene isomers and toluene are also investigated.

Notes: This paper presents the results of a testing program carried out on the fracture properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). The objective of the program was to determine the validity of using standard impact test methods to obtain fracture data, as opposed to the more expensive fracture toughness tests. It was found that impact test results may be used to evaluate fracture properties for PMMA with correlation being obtained with fracture toughness test data.

Notes: The fracture behavior of glass-cloth-reinforced composites has been studied. Fracture of these composites proceeds by tensile failure of fibers rather than by the shear failure of the matrix or the interface. Although the spread of damage in these composites is restricted to small distances away from the crack path due to the interweaving of the fibers, this distance is found to be appreciably larger for the samples with smaller initial crack lengths. Characteristic distances associated with the Whitney-Nuismer criteria are, in turn, found to be smaller for these composites than for the angle ply laminates or randomly oriented short-fiber composites reported in literature in which the spread of the damage is much greater. Analysis through the crack growth resistance also supports this correlation with the extent of damage spread and indicates that the critical crack length for these composites may be equal to the best fit value of the characteristic distance of the average stress criterion.

Notes: The surface dynamics of pendant aqueous droplets forming at a submerged nozzle in an immiscible organic solvent have been studied using a novel laser-activated photochromic tracer technique. This enabled a small element of surface to be labeled so that its subsequent history could be recorded photographically. Results for aqueous droplets forming in toluene in the absence of any mass transfer indicated only a slow interfacial circulation from the front to the rear, and there was no indication of any surface renewal as a result of hydrodynamic flow even at nozzle Reynolds numbers as high as 300. By contrast, the introduction of any one of a number of organic solutes into the toluene phase led to sporadic Marangoni-type interfacial disturbances, which in turn resulted in rapid replacement of elements of the droplet surface. It is proposed that renewal of the droplet surface is dependent on solute diffusion in the present instance and that the processes of surface renewal and mass transfer are likely to be interactive.
