    Notes: Results are presented from an experimental study of the molecular mixing of a dynamically passive conserved scalar quantity in an axisymmetric laminar vortex ring. The experiments are based on highly resolved laser-induced fluorescence imaging measurements of the scalar field ζ(x,t) in the diametral plane of the ring, from which the evolution of the molecular mixing rate field ∇ζ⋅∇ζ(x,t) can be directly examined. In particular, the structure and dynamics of the mixing process are addressed during the three characteristic stages in the ring evolution, namely, (i) the ring generation stage, (ii) the ring pinch-off stage, and (iii) the asymptotic stage of the ring. Results show a layering of the mixing process in which the diffusional cancellation term ∇(∇ζ):∇(∇ζ) plays a major role in setting the overall mixing rate achieved. The scalar field measurements are also used to extract detailed information about the underlying velocity field in the ring.

    Notes: The scope and detail of physics contained in computational models for fluid (density, momentum, energy) transport in toroidal plasmas have steadily increased during the past two decades. There has been considerable success in the development and verification of models for sources and sinks of particles, energy, momentum, and magnetic flux. Transport codes have collectively become very useful tools in interpreting experimental data and in providing guidance for new experiments. However, a more thorough understanding of the fundamental transport processes of magnetically confined plasmas and development of improved computational models are needed to enhance the predictive capabilities of transport codes. It is argued that fluid transport modeling by itself cannot lead to a complete understanding of transport—there must be a very strong collaboration among theory, experiment, and modeling on both the fluid and kinetic levels.

    Notes: A numerical simulation of decaying supersonic turbulence using the piecewise parabolic method (PPM) algorithm on a computational mesh of 5123 zones indicates that, once the solenoidal part of the velocity field, representing vortical motions, is fully developed and has reached a self-similar regime, a velocity spectrum compatible with that predicted by the classical theory of Kolmogorov develops. It is followed by a domain with a shallower spectrum. A convergence study is presented to support these assertions. The formation, structure, and evolution of slip surfaces and vortex tubes are presented in terms of perspective volume renderings of fields in physical space.

    Notes: A general purpose data acquisition and control system for scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) using Visual Basic is presented. This Windows hosted Visual Basic environment is highly desirable for use in STM image manipulation, storage, and printing, but in its standard form is not suitable for most data acquisition and display applications. Many of the inherent limitations in the Visual Basic language have been overcome by the use of direct calls to the Windows Application Program Interface. In this paper, we describe a general Visual Basic STM user interface and control system, and the extensions to the language using the Windows API needed to implement this system.

    Notes: A reliable sodium wire-array z-pinch load has been developed for use on the Saturn accelerator. This load routinely produces implosions with ≥200 GW of power in the heliumlike sodium 1s2–1s2p 1P1 line at 11 A(ring). Our best shots have used a 12.5-mm-diam, 20-mm-long annular array of 16 75-μm-diam pure sodium wires. This load will allow us to test predictions of gain in the sodium/neon resonant photoexcitation x-ray laser system.

    Notes: The crystal structure and magnetic properties of Co(HPO3)⋅H2O have been determined. The solid crystallizes in space group Pca21, a=8.984(2) A(ring), b=7.918(2) A(ring), c=10.139(8) A(ring), V=721.2 A(ring)3. Z=4 dcalc =2.89 g/cm3. The structure consists of layers only connected by hydrogen bonds. These layers can be viewed as formed by zigzag chains of edge-sharing Co(II)O6 octahedra interconnected by a three atom bridge (O-P-O) and a single oxygen bridge. ac magnetic susceptibility measurements show a sharp peak at Tc =(10.8±0.1) K, and are consistent with a transition from one- to two-dimensional magnetic order, in agreement with the structure. An analysis of the χT/C vs ε=(1−Tc/T) data in the critical region, for T〉Tc, using a double-logarithmic plot, yields a critical exponent γ=1.75 for 0.01〈ε〈0.1, which correspond to a two-dimensional Ising model.

    Notes: Modified Bethe–Bloch theory of stopping power provides for inclusion of several parameters in the Bethe–Bloch formula. These parameters include the target mean excitation energy and those associated with target shell corections, with the low-velocity projectile-z3 (Barkas effect) term, and with an effective charge factor. Fits of stopping power measurements permit extraction of one or two (and sometimes three) parameter values while the remaining parameters are assigned fixed values based on other studies. Omission of one or more of the required correction terms or factors induces distortions in the values of the extracted parameters. A recent development has been omission of the (parameter independent) high-velocity Barkas effect term in an analysis where projectile energies were sufficiently high to necessitate inclusion of this term. The importance of incorporating all pertinent terms and factors into the modified Bethe–Bloch formula is strenuously emphasized.
