    Notes: The residence time distribution of the liquid phase within a three-phase monlith reactor is determined using tracer studies. The actual liquid residence time in the monolith, relevant for reactor design purposes, is calculated from overall residence time measurements using deconvolution by Fourier transform. The liquid-phase residence time decreases as liquid or gas flow rates increase, but the reactor Peclet number remains approximately constant. The residence time distribution and calculated values of the Peclet number reveal that the liquid phase is substantially well-mixed. Comparison with results from experiments in a single glass capillary reveals that the monolith channels become predominantly liquid-filled, particularly as the liquid flow rate becomes a significant fraction of the total flow rate.

    Notes: The decreasing solubility of hydrogen in hydrocarbons with decreasing temperature continues down to the freezing point of the hydrocarbons, around -300°F. This behavior is shown to be an enlargement of phenomena exhibited by normal hydrocarbon mixtures. Methods of predicting equilibrium-phase compositions are presented for hydrogen in ligh-hydrocarbon systems. The correlations are satisfactory for binary and certain ternary systems, but are not reliable for complex mixtures.

    Notes: The separation of 4.5 g. of americium from approximately a kilogram of light rare earths (primarily lanthanum) was achieved on a pilot plant scale by chromatographic displacement of the mixture from Dowex-50 resin with 0.1% ammonium citrate at pH 8 into hydrogen-form Dowex-50. The americium collected into a narrow band and was eluted free from lanthanum but contained an equal weight of cerium. A 6- and a 2-in.-diam. column were used in tandem. Use of a final column with a much smaller diameter would have permitted a cleaner separation from cerium, but this was left for a laboratory-scale separation by a different process. Precipitation, which was observed in the columns during the first runs, was later avoided entriely by use of high flow rates both initially and during the transfer between columns. No adverse effects were noted from ∼15 curies of alpha activity.

    Notes: Accurate detection of minimum liquid fluidization is essential to the successful operation of gas-liquid-solid fluidized beds, especially when particle or liquid properties evolve. A gas-liqid-solid system of 3-mm glass beads exhibits three distinct flow regimes as the liquid velocity is increased: compacted, agitated and fluidized-bed regmes. Measurements showed that the bed is not fluidized in the agitated bed regime. Pressure gradient and bed height measurements do not provide the minimum liquid fluidization velocity; instead, they offer the velocity between the compacted and agitated bed regimes. Time-averaged signals are not reliable for determining the minimum liquid fluidization velocity. It can be obtained from the standard deviation, the average frequency, the Hurst exponent and the V statistic of the cross-sectional average conductivity, which can be measured under many industrial conditions.

    Notes: Plantwide control involves the systems and strategies required to control an entire chemical plant consisting of many interconnected unit operations. A general heuristic design procedure is presented that generates an effective plantwide control structure for an entire complex process flowsheet and not simply individual units. The nine steps of the proposed procedure center around the fundamental principles of plantwide control: energy management; production rate; product quality; operational, environmental and safety constraints; liquid-level and gas-pressure inventories; makeup of reactants; component balances; and economic or process optimization. Application of the procedure is illustrated with three industrial examples: the vinyl acetate monomer process, the Eastman plantwide-control process, and the HDA process.

    Notes: Research was carried out to develop improved protection guidelines for silane handling systems through enhanced understanding of the behavior of releases of this pyrophoric gas. The approach involved addressing three aspects of the problem: the prompt ignition behavior of silane; the reactivity characteristics of quiescent silane/air mixtures; and the rates of reaction of silane leaked into enclosures with and without explosion venting, in the presence of ventilation air flow. A first conclusion, reached from tests in a ventilated cabinet, was that, contrary to prevailing belief, the ventilation flow has no measurable effect on the prompt ignition of the release. From experiments in a 5.1-liter (311-in.3) sphere it was found that silane/air mixtures of concentrations between 1.4 and 4.1% (by volume) are explosive but stable. In this case, piloted ignition tests yielded laminar burning velocities up to 5 m/s (1000 ft/min). Mixtures between 4.5 and 38% (the maximum reached in the tests) were found to be metastable, and would undergo spontaneous ignition after a delay ranging from 15 to 120 seconds, with the shorter values corresponding to higher silane concentrations. Experiments were also performed in a 0.645-m3 (22.8-ft3) vessel both with and without explosion venting, to measure the rates of energy release associated with impulsively-started silane leaks from 1/8 and 1/4-in. (3.2 and 6.4-mm) lines. A method for the prediction of the venting requirements of partial-volume deflagrations (PVD) was evolved into a tool to quantify the pressure rise from ignition of silane leaks in enclosures. These results represent a significant step toward updating existing design recommendations which prescribe ventilation requirements that are based on outdated and, in some instances, misinterpreted data.

    Notes: Double yields, as well as other complex yielding behavior, that are observed during the tensile deformation of the polyethylenes have been studied in a systematic manner. The conditions under which such yielding is observed were established by studying a set of linear polyethylenes and well-characterized ethylene copolymers of narrow molecular weight and composition distributions. A wide range in crystallinity levels were developed and the rate of deformation and the deformation temperature were varied. These experimental results make clear why such complex yielding processes are not always observed. A qualitative explanation, based on the postulate of a partial melting-recrystallization process during deformation, is given that encompasses all of the experimental data.

    Notes: The melt viscosity of thermoplastic starch has been investigated as a function of temperature, moisture content, and processing conditions. The effects of various low molecular weight additives have also been studied. Starch melts exhibit power law behavior over the range of shear rates studied. Melt viscosity decreased with increasing temperature and moisture content (MC). The power law index m increased with increasing temperature. The consistency K decreased with increasing temperature and increasing moisture content. Moisture content during the pelletizing step influenced melt viscosities measured after equilibration to different MCs. All additives studied except glycerol monostearate (GMS) significantly lowered the melt viscosity of starch, some more effectively than water relative to starch with 15% MC. Starch with GMS had viscosities essentially the same as, or slightly higher than, starch/water. This behavior may be due to the presence of unmelted helical inclusion complexes of starch and GMS. Starch formulations at 160°C exhibited melt visocosities similar to an LDPE of melt index 1.8.
