Notes: : Determination of the boundary conditions for modeling ground water flow is a critical point especially in regional models. Normally the regional models require model areas that are greater than the given area of interest. This work focuses on the prediction of hydraulic heads in regional models using flux boundary conditions. The model uses flux boundary conditions that were estimated using a radial flow analog and Darcy's law. The regional model that is presented uses no parameter identification (inverse estimation) procedures. In the present work, the Houston area was used. The simulation of the hydrological conditions of the Chicot and Evangeline Aquifers that underlie the Houston area were made using the available information about the geological profile in the Houston region and the current information about the existing production wells. The regional model works as a forward problem. The system parameters such as hydraulic conductivity, specific storage, and hydrological stresses were specified, and the model predicts the hydraulic head. Actual data from piezometers operated by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in many places throughout Houston were used as initial conditions. Some piezometric head data were generated using the regional variable theory called kriging to supply head estimates in areas where data were unavailable. The Modular Three Dimensional Finite Difference Groundwater Flow Model developed by the USGS was used to predict the hydraulic heads. The predicted ground water heads are compared to the actual data. The results show that the model performs well for locations where data were available.

Notes: Ground beef with 26.3% fat was cooked by browning/draining (BD), browning/rinsing (BR), and an oil-extraction method with (OA) or without (ON) meat broth added back. BR caused the most reduction of total fat and cholesterol, whereas ON and OA yielded less cooked meat than BD and BR. ON and OA cooked samples, compared to BD and BR samples, contained more polyunsaturated fatty acids and nonheme iron and had higher TBA values unon extended storage at 4°C. Trained sensory panelists rated BD or BR cooked ground beef more intense in positive flavor note (“cooked beef/brothy”) than ON or OA meat. Likewise, consumers tended to prefer meatloaf, spaghetti sauce, and chili prepared with BD or BR cooked ground beef to those prepared with ON or OA cooked meat.

Notes: An equation of state for a fluid of hard disks is proposed: Z=[1−2η+(2η0−1)(η/η0)2]−1. The exact fit of the second virial coefficient and the existence of a single pole singularity at the close-packing fraction η0 are the only requirements imposed on its construction. A comparison of the prediction of virial coefficients and of the values of the compressibility factor Z with those stemming out of other known equations of state is made. The overall performance of this very simple equation of state is quite satisfactory. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Labeling experiments using [1-13C]acetate or [1-13C]glucose were performed with opportunistic pathogenic bacteria, with innocuous bacteria related to pathogenic species or with phytopathogenic species. The labeling pattern was determined in the isoprenic moiety of ubiquinone or menaquinone derivatives. These experiments showed that Acinetobacter, Citrobacter, Erwinia, Pseudomonas, Burkholderia, Ralstonia and Mycobacterium synthesize their isoprenoids via the mevalonate-independent glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate/pyruvate route. Enzymes of this novel bacterial metabolic route, which is apparently absent in vertebrates and man, therefore represent potential targets for a novel type of antibacterial drugs.

Notes: A method to obtain (approximate) analytical expressions for the radial distribution functions and structure factors in a multicomponent system of sticky hard spheres is introduced. In its simplest implementation, the method yields the Percus–Yevick approximation. In the next order, only contact values of the cavity functions and the isothermal compressibility are required. Some tentative strategies to determine the input values are discussed. Illustrative examples following these strategies, in which the radial distribution functions and structure factors are computed, are also presented. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A method to obtain (approximate) analytical expressions for the radial distribution functions and structure factors in a multi-component mixture of additive hard spheres is introduced. In this method, only contact values of the radial distribution function and the isothermal compressibility are required and thermodynamic consistency is achieved. The approach is simpler than but yields equivalent results to the Generalized Mean Spherical Approximation. Calculations are presented for a binary and a ternary mixture at high density in which the BoublíkMansoori-Carnahan-Starling-Leland equation of state is used. The results are compared with the Percus-Yevick approximation and the most recent simulation data. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Variability in the response to salinity within Chloris gayana (Rhodes grass) germplasm was evaluated under field conditions, and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to assess genetic relatedness among cultivars/accessions. RAPD analysis showed a clustering of cultivars of known relatedness: cv. Pioneer and accessions Local and Trancas (derived from an old Pioneer pasture established in saline soil) belonged to the same cluster, Katambora to another and tetraploid Boma and Callide could be further separated, Boma belonging to a fourth, distant cluster. Field experiments were laid out in two types of plots: control [with electrical conductivity of the saturation extract (EC) = 3·64 dS m−1] and saline (EC=13·10 dS m−1) and two experiments were carried out: one to evaluate the effects of salinity on emergence and establishment, and the other, with a uniform number of plants per plot, to evaluate yield under saline conditions. All cultivars/accessions had salinity-associated decreases in dry-matter (DM) production during the establishment phase. After this stage, 1-year DM yield was similar in all cultivars within each salinity level and production in the saline plots was significantly lower than in controls only in cv. Callide and accession Trancas. Second-year production in the non-saline plots increased by 30% on average over the previous year, whereas an average 40% reduction was observed in the saline plots. Thus, salinity had a negative effect on Rhodes grass establishment and persistence. The cultivars could not be ranked unequivocally by production under saline conditions, but tetraploids Boma and Callide may be said to be less tolerant than the rest on the basis of an increased proportion of dead leaves and decreased number of stolons observed in the saline plot.

Notes: The Argentinean semiarid Chaco region is climatically suitable for cattle raising and has an average annual rainfall of 550 mm, concentrated from November to February. There, large areas are affected by high salinity; thus, perennial forages suitable for this region must combine adequate salt and drought tolerance. Panicum coloratum is a C4 perennial grass adapted over a wide range of soil and rainfall conditions, and the purpose of this study was to evaluate the response of two cultivars (Klein Verde and Bambatsi) to salinity. Under controlled conditions, 100 and 200 mmol l−1 NaCl delayed germination and significantly reduced germination percentages and seedling survival in both cultivars. However, in the field, factors other than salinity (possibly drought) had a large impact on plant survival. In short-term experiments under controlled environmental conditions, the vegetative growth of cultivar Klein Verde was less affected by salinity than Bambatsi. The cumulative growth over one year in a saline plot was also higher in cultivar Klein Verde. This cultivar also had higher shoot K+/Na+ ratios under salinity, as a result of higher K+ concentrations, and accumulated more triglycerides in roots. These features have been associated with salt tolerance in other species.

Notes: An autofocus circuit, based on measurement of the high spatial frequency image components, was designed for automated microscopic scanning of biological specimens. By careful consideration of the system transfer function, elimination of video end-of-line filter artifacts, correction for illumination instability, and incorporation of autogain, the focus measurement circuit attained the sensitivity and dynamic range necessary for robust operation even at the extremes of biological specimen detail encountered in exhaustive raster scans of thousands of fields. This new circuit exhibited a 25-fold improvement in dynamic range over a previous analog implementation, matched real-time digital performance at an order of magnitude lower cost, resulted in autofocus precision of 56 nm (or 10-fold better than the depth of field of the objective) in scanning experiments comprising over 10 000 microscope fields, and tracked focus at scanning speeds of up to 3.45 fields/s. Focus was correctly maintained in these scanning experiments without additional compensation for low-detail images. This circuit makes possible the widespread inclusion of high-performance autofocus as a low cost option in video microscopy systems. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
