Beschreibung: As a working definition of the extent of the middle atmosphere (MA), the height range from 30 to 100 km was adopted. The neutral and ionic composition and the dynamics within this height range are, for the most part, poorly understood. From available information, the importance of various particle and photon energy sources, including their variability, for ionization of the neutral atmosphere in this height range is assessed. The following topics are discussed: (1) penetration of the MA by particle and electromagnetic energy; (2) ionization sources for the MA; (3) galactic cosmic rays; (4) solar H Ly alpha, other EUV, and X-rays; (5) magnetospheric electrons and bremsstrahlung X-rays; and (6) solar cosmic rays.

Beschreibung: HF wave propagation experiments were conducted on Mother-Daughter rockets in the polar ionosphere. Swept frequency transmissions from the Mother, nominally covering the range from 0.5 to 5 MHz in both CW and pulse modes, are received by the Daughter. In the most recent rocket of the series, the Mother also contained an AC electric field spectrometer covering the frequency range from 10 Hz to 100 kHz in four decade bands. The low frequency response of the ionosphere with respect to waves emitted from the onboard HF transmitter is examined.

Beschreibung: Experimental observations from a variety of sources made during a substorm period near 0900 UT on January 2, 1971 have provided evidence confirming mid-latitude and subauroral phenomena associated with magnetic substorm activity. A review of these observations, including ground and balloon observations made near L=4 at the conjugate stations Siple, Antarctica and Roberval, Canada and data obtained from the synchronous-orbit satellite ATS 5 positioned about 2 hours west of the Siple, Roberval meridian, is presented. During the hour before the reported correlated bursts of X rays and VLF noise (Rosenberg et al., 1971), the plasmapause appears to be displaced towards the equator from Siple; resonance conditions along the field lines at Siple were favorable for the observation of results of magnetospheric wave-particle interactions involving electrons with energies exceeding 30 keV. The correlated observations are a potential source of information concerning the relationship of ULF and VHF noise activity to the magnetospheric particle population at middle latitudes; the injection and subsequent drift of low and medium energy electrons during substorms; and enhanced particle precipitation deep within the plasmasphere during substorms.

Beschreibung: The effect of trapped and precipitated particles in the magnetosphere on the measurement of galactic X-rays and gamma rays is discussed. To minimize contamination caused by electron precipitation, most galactic X-ray and gamma ray measurements are conducted at equatorial or relatively low to middle latitudes where the influence of auroral effects is expected to be small. Substorm-related VLF phase perturbations also affect the measurements. If such perturbation are indicative of electron precipitation at middle to low latitudes, then their relatively high frequency of occurrence, as many as 100 per year, is evidence that electron precipitation at these latitudes may pose a problem to some galactic X-ray and gamma ray measurements. Charts and maps are presented to show: (1) phase recordings from sixteen sub-ionospheric VLF propagation paths, (2) map of great circle propagation paths, (3) ionization rates in the nighttime ionosphere due to several sources, and (4) computer phase variation for the NLK-APL path versus electron flux for different e-folding energies.

Beschreibung: The synchronous altitude satellite ATS 1 data and near-conjugate measurements of bremsstrahlung X-rays and ground magnetic variations were used to analyze an event of modulated auroral zone electron precipitation and magnetic pulsations in the Pc range. Transverse, azimuthal, nearly linearly polarized waves observed at ATS 1, ground magnetic pulsations at College, Alaska, and intervals of modulated electron precipitation centered on local magnetic moon, and noted in the X-ray data from Fort Yukon, Alaska, are discussed, noting that the origin of the Pc 3 waves is attributed to local field line resonances induced by Kelvin-Helmholtz instability at the magnetopause. The wave resonance model can explain observed differences in the pulsation activity at the ground, balloon, and satellite if account is taken of the spatial sensitivities of the techniques and the location of observing sites with respect to the probable location of resonant field lines. The data suggest that electron precipitation pulsations will correlate with Pc 3 magnetic pulsations when substorm injections coupled with azimuthal drift provide enhanced energetic particle fluxes with dayside resonance regions.

Beschreibung: The Siple Station conjugate locations in the Northern Hemisphere are examined for the epoch 1975-1990 according to the predictions of three internal source geomagnetic field models (1GRF 1980, Magsat 1980, Barraclough 1975) and one external field model (Mead/Fairfield) under quiet and disturbed conditions. The conjugate location systematically changes in the interval studied, making it imperative that changes be made in the locations of the Northern Hemisphere geophysical stations during the reactivation of Siple Station in 1985-1987.

Beschreibung: For three magnetically disturbed days in early 1980, data from south polar masses of the Magsat satellite are compared with data from search coil magnetometer, riometer, and photometer instrumentation at Siple, Antarctica. It is found that during each Magsat polar pass in the morning sector, the level of Pi 1 activity correlates well with the intensities of three-dimensional current systems. Fine structure is often observed in the field-aligned currents during periods of intense Pi activity. Among the Birkeland currents are 2-s to 10-s (16-80 km) structured perturbations; these are evident in the transverse components of the field and are thought to indicate filamentary currents. Pi 1 amplitudes are found to be considerably larger when region 2 Birkeland currents are overhead than when they are not. In one case, detailed features are identified in the high-resolution Magsat magnetic field data that may be current fluctuations related to asymmetric Pi 1.

Beschreibung: Two events in August 1967, categorized as relativistic electron precipitation (REP) events by their effect on VHF transmissions propagated via the forward-scatter mode, have been examined with regard to the energy spectra of trapped and precipitated electrons. These two substorm-associated events August 11 and August 25 differ with respect to the relativistic, trapped electron population at synchronous altitude; in the August 25 event there was a nonadiabatic enhancement of relativistic (greater than 400 keV) electrons, while in the August 11 event no relativistic electrons were produced. In both events electron spectra deduced from bremsstrahlung measurements (made on a field line close to that of the satellite) had approximately the same e-folding energies as the trapped electron enhancements. However, the spectrum of electrons in the August 25 event was significantly harder than the spectrum in the event of August 11.
