Notizen: Geometrical properties of the pore-solid interfaces of devolatilized charcoals from the pyrolysis of fuel woods in a bench-scale fluidized-bed reactor were investigated through small-angle X-ray scattering. Specifically, surface morphological features of the interfaces were characterized by a single parameter indicative of the degree of surface roughness, that is, the surface fractal dimension, dSF, at various retention times. The surface fractal dimensions of the original wood samples prior to devolatilization were approximately identical for all species within the range between 2.00 and 2.15, over a length scale from 55 to 600 Å, and those for the respective charcoals from these wood samples were influenced to different degrees by the retention time, τ, in the reactor. The dSF's of the mesopores of charcoals of all the species attained maxima at a value of τ equal to 35 s and decreased subsequently with an increase in τ. The analysis of this unexpected trend was facilitated by the values of the mean radii of gyration of the pores, estimated through the Guinier plots. The results imply that when the retention time of the charcoals in the reactor is prolonged, the mechanism of pore enlargement and smoothening of the interfaces can play a dominant role in altering the surface morphology and thereby influence significantly the kinetics of chemical reactions in heterogeneous porous systems.

Notizen: An on-line statistical study of the pressure fluctuations in fluidized beds was conducted by using pressure transducers, a correlation and probability analyzer and a Fourier transform analyzer. The causes of the fluctuations were explored, and the effects of the gas velocity, bed height, particle size and distributor design on the major frequency and amplitude of the fluctuations were investigated. The results indicate that the motion of bubbles appears to be the major cause of the pressure fluctuations in the upper portion of a fluidized bed. In the lower portion, the combined effects of the formation of large bubbles in the middle portion of the bed, the formation of small bubbles near the distributor, and the jet flow immediately above the distributor appear to be the major causes of pressure fluctuations.

Notizen: The rise velocities of bubbles, slugs and pressure waves in a fluidized bed have been measured on-line through the use of pressure transducers coupled with the cross-correlation technique. Sand and glass beads with different particle sizes were tested. Effects of the gas flow rate and column diameter on the rise velocities of bubbles and slugs were investigated. The results were correlated with two models developed in this work and were compared with the data obtained by other investigators.

Notizen: Thermal gasification has been proposed as one technical option for the conversion of coal to gaseous fuels and/or chemicals to supplement supplies presently derived from petroleum and natural gas. In the present study, a bench-scale fluidized bed reactor was used for the gasification of coal with steam as the fluidizing medium. A mixture of sand and limestone used as the bed material made it possible to gasify a caking coal without the problem of agglomeration. The gas composition and yield of the hydrogen-rich product gas were studied as a function of temperature. To study the heterogeneous reactions taking place in the reactor and also the transient behavior of the system, a mathematical model was developed. The model assumed a reaction mechanism that accounted for the devolatilization of coal, cracking of volatiles, char gasification, and the water-gas shift reaction. Both the dynamic behavior and steady state performance of the gasifier were simulated based on the model. The steady state results of the simulation were compared with the experimental data. This comparison enabled us to ascertain that the proposed reaction mechanism and dynamic model predicted the correct trends.
