Beschreibung: We are conducting a search for emission-line objects at large redshifts, ostensibly young and forming galaxies. Our method is to search for strong line emission, in particular Ly-alpha, using two techniques: a direct, narrow-band imaging search using a Fabry-Perot interferometer; and a serendipitous long-slit spectroscopic search. Assuming that none of the faint candidates found so far are actually primeval galaxies, we can set the strongest limits to date on the surface density of Ly-alpha-luminous primeval galaxies on the sky. Some of the faint emission line galaxies detected in our survey at z roughly 0.5 - 1 may be representative of the faint blue galaxy population detected in deep continuum imaging surveys.

Beschreibung: The earth albedo gamma radiation above 35 MeV in the equatorial region is investigated using observations from the second Small Astronomy Satellite. The zenith angle distribution of the gamma radiation has a peak toward the horizon which is about an order of magnitude more intense than the radiation coming from the nadir, and nearly two orders of magnitude more intense than the gamma radiation from most parts of the sky. The gamma radiation originating from the western horizon is a factor of four more intense than the radiation from the eastern horizon and a factor of three more intense than that from the northern and southern directions. This reflects the geomagnetic effects on the incident cosmic rays whose interactions produce the albedo gamma rays. The variation of the upcoming gamma ray intensity with vertical cutoff rigidity is consistent with the empirical relationship found by Gur'yan et al. (1979).

Beschreibung: Spectrophotometric scans were obtained at 8 A resolution from 3295 to 8880 A on twenty nights before, during, and after the recent eclipse of epsilon Aurigae, beginning with a pre-eclipse observation on 5 March 1982 U.T. The observations were reduced to absolute flux using the standard stars 109 Vir or xi(2) Ceti. The data confirm that the eclipse is essentially gray over the entire visible spectrum, as others have noted from broadband photometry. High resolution echellograms (450 to 6700 A) made through mid-eclipse and the scans show changes in the equivalent widths of H alpha, Na D, and O I as large as a factor of two.

Beschreibung: UBV photometric observations of the M asteroid 69 Hesperia, obtained using single-channel photometers on the 31-in. and 42-in. reflectors at Lowell Observatory and on the 24-in. reflector at Mauna Kea Observatory during the apparition of August-November 1977, are reported. The data are presented in tables and graphs and analyzed. Findings presented include minimal temporal or phase-angle-dependent light-curve fluctuations, evidence for large-scale albedo variegation of a few percent, synodic rotation period 5.65537 + or - 0.00064 h, zero-phase color indices B-V = 0.68 mag and U-B = 0.24 mag, B-V phase reddening 0.003 mag/deg, and absolute zero-phase primary maximum magnitude V = 7.04.

Beschreibung: New absolute spectrophotometry of Uranus between 3295 A and 7676 A obtained at spectral resolutions of 4 A and 8 A during its 1981 apparition is reported and compared with previous observations by Younkin (1970) recorded during the 1961-1963 apparitions. Geometric albedos are calculated, and Bond albedos are estimated for both sets of data. An increase in brightness of about 14% and a color change occurred during the interval between the epochs of observation, consistent with the high north-polar haze reported by Price and Franz (1979) and the change in aspect of the planet. An upper limit to the internal heat source is estimated from energy balance considerations.

Beschreibung: ERTS-1 MSS data covering parts of Pennsylvania's southern and eastern middle anthracite coal fields were studied to determine how well accumulations of coal refuse could be identified and mapped by computer analysis and processing. Spectral signatures of coal refuse targets were similar to water, but had higher reflectances in all channels. Relative reflectances were in the order 4 5 or = 6 7. Although no underflight photography was at hand to judge mapping success, correlation was made, with 1:24,000 scale U.S.G.S. maps dated 1947 and 1948. Coal refuse targets correlated well with existing maps.

Beschreibung: Observations from the Einstein observatory reveal a previously unreported source, 1e1145.1-6141, within 15 arcmin of 2s1145-619 and of comparable intensity during July 1979. Periodicity analysis of the data shows a 290 + or - 2s period for the 2s source and a 298 + or - 4s period for the lE source, confirming the previous Ariel V report of two periods in this range from this region of the sky.

Beschreibung: The occultation of AG+40 deg 0783 by 324 Bamberga on 8 December 1987 was observed at 13 sites in the United States, Japan, and China. At four sites the event was observed photoelectrically; the other observations were visual. A least-squares fit of a circular limb profile to the data gives a diameter of 227.6 + or - 1.9 km. However, this solution is inconsistent with a negative visual observation near the northern edge of the ground track. The inconsistency cannot be removed by assuming an elliptical profile. The data suggest that Bamberga, despite its low-amplitude lightcurve, may depart significantly from a spherical or ellipsoidal shape. The asteroid also appears to be at least 10 percent smaller than indicated by infrared radiometry.

Beschreibung: UBV observations of asteroid 433 Eros were conducted on 17 nights during the winter of 1974/75. The peak-to-peak amplitude of the light curve varied from about 0.3 mag to nearly 1.4 mag. The absolute V magnitude, extrapolated to zero phase, is 10.85. Phase coefficients of 0.0245 mag/degree, 0.0009 mag/degree, and 0.0004 mag/degree were derived for V, B-V, and U-B, respectively. The zero-phase color of Eros (B-V = 0.88, U-B = 0.50) is representative of an S (silicaceous) compositional type asteroid. The color does not vary with rotation. The photometric behavior of Eros can be modeled by a cylinder with rounded ends having an axial ratio of about 2.3:1.

Beschreibung: The second Small Astronomy Satellite high-energy (35 MeV) gamma-ray telescope detected pulsed gamma-ray emission at the radio period from PSR 0833-45, the Vela pulsar, as well as an unpulsed flux from the Vela region. The pulsed emission consists of two peaks, one following the radio peak by about 13 msec, and the other 0.4 period after the first. The luminosity of the pulsed emission above 100 MeV from Vela is about 0.1 that of the pulsar NP0532 in the Crab nebula, whereas the pulsed emission from Vela at optical wavelengths is less than 0.0004 that from the Crab. The relatively high intensity of the pulsed gamma-ray emission and the double peak structure, compared to the single pulse in the radio emission, suggests that the high energy gamma-ray pulsar emission may be produced under different conditions from those found at lower energies.
