    Notizen: Abstract Theε—θ function (energy level function) which represents surface heterogeneity was derived from theq—θ function (experimental heat function) in the case of reversible adsorption. The Langmuir equation was extended and applied to the procedure of calculations. An iterative calculation led to the most probableε—θ function by setting theq—θ function and adsorption temperature. As an example for actual cases, theε—θ function of Na-Y zeolite was calculated from theq—θ function obtained by the measurement of heats of adsorption of ammonia at 373 K. Theε—θ function thus derived seemed to be consistent with the positional distribution of sodium ions.

    Notizen: Abstract The surface of silica was treated with trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) and hexa-methyldisilazane (HMDS) respectively and the immersional heat into water, adsorption capacity for water vapor and infrared absorption spectra were measured. TMCS reacts with freely vibrating silanols while HMDS also reacts with other silanols. By treatment with silane, the silica surface is covered by the trimethylsilyl group, a maximum amount of which attains 1 meq/g (3 groups/nm2). As the amount of the trimethylsilyl group on silica increases, the immersional heat of silica into water decreases and attains a constant value of about 25 erg/cm2, which is the typcial value for a hydrophobic surface. The interaction of the trimethylsilyl group with water is weak, therefore the adsorptive capacity for water vapor is lessened remarkably by treatment with silane.

    Notizen: Abstract An attempt was made to calculate theq—θ function (experimental heat function) from theε—θ function (energy level function) of a heterogeneous surface. In order to obtain the heat of adsorption, adsorption was assumed to take place on each energy level of theε—θ function. In reversible adsorption, Langmuir's monolayer model was extended to determine the occupation of energy levels by molecules. On this basis, the heat of adsorption could be calculated. Irreversible adsorption was also examined on the basis of chemical kinetics. Molecules were supposed to be held on sites to which they first collided. These calculations were useful for estimating the extent of deviation of theq—θ function from theε—θ function.

    Notizen: Abstract We parametrize the space of isometric immersions of the hyperbolic n -space into the hyperbolic ( n +1)-space by a family of properly chosen (at most) countable n -tuples of real-valued functions. This is an answer to the problem posed by Nomizu in 1973. We also construct a one-parameter family of deformable isometric immersions from the quotient spaces of the hyperbolic 2-plane modulo and some totally discontinuous subgroups of isometries.

    Notizen: Abstract: The lifetime of the first 2+ state in the nucleus 124Ba has been measured by γ-γ coincidence recoil-distance Doppler shift method. The 109Ag(19F, 4n)124Ba reaction at a beam energy of 75 MeV was employed to populate excited states in 124Ba. The mean lifetime was determined to be 275(12) ps using the differential decay curve method. The value of B(E2;01 +→ 21 +) for 124Ba deduced from the lifetime is in reasonable agreement with the prediction of the proton-neutron interacting boson model(IBM-2) without Pauli blocking effect.

    Notizen: Abstract The Cu concentration was about 40 times higher in the liver of LEC (Long-Evans with a cinnamon-like coat color) rats aged 77 days (227.5±21.6 μg/g liver) than in Fischer rats (5.2±0.1 μg/g liver). However, in the kidney and brain of the LEC rats, Cu concentrations were lower than in these organs of the Fischer rats. Cu concentration in the hepatic metallothionein fraction was about 130 times higher in the LEC rats than in the Fischer rats. The LEC rats showed markedly low concentrations of Cu in the serum and bile. It seems likely that excretion of Cu from the liver into the bile and blood (as ceruloplasmin) is inherently lacking in the LEC rat.

    Notizen: Abstract The effects of plant lectins on the three cellular defense reactions of hemocytes of the solitary ascidian,Halocynthia roretzi (hemocyte aggregation, phagocytosis, and an allogenic reaction), were investigated. Concanavalin A inhibited aggregation, while wheat germ agglutinin and ricin inhibited the allogenic reaction. Neither of the lectins showed inhibitory effects on phagocytosis, but ricin promoted phagocytosis. These effects of the lectins were diminished by the addition of sugars specific for the respective lectins. These results strongly suggest that different surface carbohydrates are involved in the recognition mechanisms of threeH. roretzi cellular defense reactions.
