Notizen: The objective of this investigation was to determine the quality advantages, if any, of curing whole sweet potatoes prior to marketing during the harvest season. Freshly harvested sweet potatoes were washed, graded, and boxed for shipment and then cured at 30°C and 90% RH for 0, 4 or 7 days prior to shipping. Preparations were timed so that all treatments could be shipped on the same pallet. During 2 yr a total of 8 shipments were made to northern cities (500–600 miles) by truck. Sample potatoes were evaluated by a trained flavor and texture profile panel and by analytical methods. Results indicated that curing for either 4 or 7 days developed a product that was superior in both flavor and texture. Viscosity of purees was lower for cured than for uncured sweet potatoes. Curing slightly reduced ascorbic acid content.

Beschreibung: We explore the effects of earthquake frequency and sedimentation rate on submarine slope stability by extracting correlations between morphological and geological parameters in 10 continental margins. Slope stability increases with increasing frequency of earthquakes and decreasing sedimentation rate. This increase in stability is nonlinear (power law with b 〈 0.5), accelerating with decreasing interseismic sediment accumulation. The correlation is interpreted as evidence for sediment densification and associated shear strength gain induced by repeated seismic shaking. Outliers to this correlation likely identify margins where tectonic activity leads to relatively rapid oversteepening of the slope.

Beschreibung: Multichannel seismic transects reveal an ~2-km-thick, ~50 x 100 km evaporite body under the shelf on the eastern margin of the Guaymas Basin, central Gulf of California (Mexico). These thick newly discovered evaporites appear to be correlated with well-known gypsum beds near Santa Rosalía to the northwest, on the Baja California peninsula. Closing the Gulf of California along kinematic flow lines suggests that the thin, scattered, ca. 7 Ma Santa Rosalía gypsum beds formed on the fringe of the much thicker evaporite deposit. This correlation, and the large volume of the Guaymas evaporates, implies that substantial marine incursions and subsequent evaporite deposition occurred during the Late Miocene and prior to lithospheric rupture. Furthermore, the shape of the Guaymas evaporite is indicative of a transtensional basin, suggesting that oblique extension existed in the central Gulf of California ca. 7 Ma.
