Notizen: Abstract. Experiments were started in 1967 to investigate the effects of soil mixing on fen peat soil. Peaty topsoil was mixed with mineral subsoil to a maximum depth of 80 cm at two sites, one with a clay subsoil, the other sand. Mixing was done on a commercial scale with a range of implements. After initial increases, yields of arable crops on both mixed soils were subsequently similar to those on unmixed soil. Residual herbicide activity was enhanced on mixed soils, and evidence of peat conservation was obtained at one site. The practice has not been taken up commercially because of the high capital cost of mixing and lack of serious problems which had been predicted following peat wastage.

Notizen: Probabilistic knowledge is an important input to the analysis of many decisions, and may be required for long-range forecasting, classical decision analysis, influence diagrams, fault tree analysis, and expert systems. If objective probabilities cannot be calculated, it is vital that decision makers use the best available subjective measures of probability. Standard mathematical theory allows the analyst several choices in framing subjective probability assessments. When assessing cause-effect probabilities, the three choices are causal, diagnostic, and joint probabilities. Choosing among these is difficult in light of conflicting reports that, due to cognitive heuristics, probability judgment may be biased in various poorly understood ways. For example, it has been reported that, when judging causal probabilities, people are subject to the causal information bias, and thus upwardly revise their prior probabilities more than when judging diagnostic probabilities. On the other hand, it has also been reported that in some cases, people do not take proper account of new evidence, which results in under-revision of prior probabilities. Furthermore it has been reported that, when assessing joint probabilities, people are subject to the conjunction fallacy, and thus often judge a joint probability to be higher than one of the two corresponding marginal probabilities. Our research compares the relative effects of these biases in a laboratory setting: we present new empirical results comparing the test-retest reliabilities and under(over) revision rates of causal, diagnostic, and joint probabilities. Our results suggest that the tendency to both under-revise and over-revise prior probabilities is greatest when judging diagnostic probabilities, as opposed to either causal or joint probabilities. Furthermore our results suggest that joint probability judgment is more reliable than either causal or diagnostic probability judgment.

Notizen: Recently, we developed a linear programming model to aid an electric utility company in evaluating several long-term operating decisions. Variations of this model provide insights into daily operations and valuation of supply contracts. This paper outlines the important characteristics of this class of network models including the usage of a gas storage facility, the use of market forecasts of gas prices, and the accommodation of gas contract structures. In addition, we develop a scenario optimization procedure in which demand forecasts provide scenarios. We also describe ways in which these models were automated to drive a decision support system.

Notizen: A total of 45 field sites in England were surveyed once for the presence of apothecia of Tapesia yallundae from 1992 to 1994. Apothecia were found at 21 locations and were mainly present on less than 3% of stems. However, apothecia were found on 1532% of stems at four sites. Analysis of the growth characteristics of ascospore isolates from seven sites showed that most produced colonies characteristic of the W-type of T. yallundae, with only one site yielding the R-type, Most ascospore isolates were resistant to the fungicide benomyl and effectively all remained sensitive to prochloraz. The results of the study are discussed in relation to the fungicidal control and epidemiology of T. yallundae, and the risk of spread of disease from set-aside sites.

Notizen: : H2SO4 (sulfuric acid) is formed by a chemical process that occurs in unreclaimed coal mines. The highly toxic acid then flows into the lower swamp areas where it causes considerable damage to the ecosystem. The major effect of the acid is the mass destruction of thousands of trees and various other phreatophytic plants. The contamination is so serious that most of the wildlife has migrated out of the affected area of the swamp in order to survive. Certain geological features such as coal bearing monadanocks make the area somewhat sensitive to mining activities and related geologic hazards. New methods of mine acid abatement make the concept of mass reclamation more realistic than at any time in the past. The constant annihilation of swamp life and processes emphasizes the urgent need for reclamation of the swamp.

Notizen: We report here haplotype frequencies for class I (HLA-A, B), class III (HLA-DR) and class III (Bf) gene products of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) of man. As in other studies (Bertrams & Baur, 1979; Grange et al., 1981), we have chosen to document all families typed for HLA antigens and Bf phenotypes irrespective of ascertainment. We obtained 1,094 haplotypes from 304 families resident in the North West of England, of which 34·1% had been fully typed for HLA-A,B,DR and Bf polymorphisms. We have been able to find both positive and negative linkage disequilibria for two and three locus haplotypes and have listed the most commonly occuring four locus haplotypes. Our data confirms the position of the complement group between HLA-B and HLA-DR, and we have looked for evidence of segregation distortion of MHC haplotypes.

Notizen: We have studied the activation of human ml-muscarinic receptors in a genetically engineered Chinese hamster ovary cell line (CHO-ml) to determine which second messenger systems affect the secretion of APP via the non-amyloidogenie route. Carbachol activation of the signaling pathways in CHO-ml cells promotes APP secretion by activation of both protein kinase C (PKC)-dependent or Ca++ -dependent second messenger pathways. Both pathways converge to increase the enzyme activity of phospholipase A2 (PLA2), the enzyme that releases arachidonic acid from cellular stores. Directly activating PLA2 with melittin, a peptide from bee venom, or by adding arachidonic acid directly to cultured cells increases the secretion of APP. Thus, our results indicate that arachidonic acid is yet another cellular second messenger involved in regulating the metabolism of APP in addition to PKC and cytoplasmic Ca++. Moreover, activation of PLA2 appears to be an obligatory event in increasing the secretion of APP from CHO-ml cells by the various methods of activation that we have tried thus far.
