Notizen: The bubble formation process at small, single, circular orifices at low gas flow rates is modified when the system is vertically vibrated in a sinusoidal fashion. For systems with significant gas chamber volume, bubble volume in the vibrated case is smaller than in the nonvibrated case. The vibrations increase the amount of liquid weeping through the orifice into the gas chamber. A simple inviscid model adequately predicts bubble formation in the medium-chamber-volume region at low values of amplitude and frequency of vibration and low viscosities. The boundaries of the transition from the FR ≫ 1 to the FR = 1 regions are described in terms of “the acceleration number/Eötvös number”.

Notizen: The motion of individual air bubbles in a water stream flowing turbulently in a 4 in. × 4 in. vertical conduit is investigated by photographic means. The bulk water velocity ranges from 40.8 to 267 cm./sec., corresponding to a system Reynolds number range of 48,600 to 386,000. Both tap and demineralized water were used at or near room temperatures. Air bubbles range from 0.038 to 0.70 cm. in equivalent radius and the corresponding bubble Reynolds number based on relative velocity ranges from 58 to 4,500.The results indicated that the bubble relative velocity in a turbulent water stream is similar to the rise velocity of single bubbles through a quiescent liquid. It was found to be practically independent of the system Reynolds number for bubbles having an equivalent radius above 0.3 cm. Large fluctuations in the bubble velocities were noted in all cases. The drag coefficient is, in general, lower for the demineralized water tests than for tap water when the bubble Reynolds number is below 2,000. Above this value, a mergence of the drag coefficients for all tests occur with a peak of approximately 2.0 at a bubble Reynolds number of 3,000, which is lower than the nonflow value of 2.6.

Notizen: Bass' feedback controller design technique is extended to distributed parameter systems and its use is illustrated for a parabolic system with boundary control. The development of the design technique rests on a conjecture concerning the necessary and sufficient conditions for the asymptotic stability of linear time invariant partial differential equations. It is shown through a study of the discretized analog of a distributed system that the most likely candidate for a Lyapunov functional general enough to yield the necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability is a double integral with a symmetric kernel.

Notizen: Analytical solutions were obtained for temperature distributions in a single adiabatic fuel cell with heat generation by TΔS, I2R, and polarization. With these results it is possible to characterize heat transfer in a battery with convection in the fuel and air streams, and with conduction of heat in three directions, by means of an average temperature for which an analytical solution was also obtained. Although the temperature can be kept within safe limits in low-power density batteries, the results show that critical dimensions exist beyond which failure by thermal buckling will occur.

Notizen: Convective diffusion of heat is a problem which arises in many areas. Since most thermal transport situations involve more than one material insulation, supports, etc., the treatment of composite regions is of interest. In certain systems, namely, those involving chemical or nuclear reactions, heat generation may be either localized or distributed. In this paper a general analytical treatment of this problem is made by using a double Fourier series technique involving an extended orthogonality concept. This treatment is then applied to the solutions of heat transfer situations arising in electrochemical energy conversion systems. Experimental temperature profiles are presented which test the theory.

Notizen: The mathematical tools necessary to describe quantitatively the chemical processes that dictate the performance of exhaust oxygen sensors are developed. Such sensors are used commonly to monitor exhaust streams generated by internal-combustion processes. Calculated results compare well with available experimental results, although several open questions are idetified that require more experimental data. The mathematical formalism for describing the transport of gaseous species through the porous spinel structure protecting the platinum electrode on the exhaust side of the sensor is developed based on the Stefan-Maxwell equations. The kinetic processes occurring at the interface formed by the platinum electrode and the spinel structure, including the oxidation of hydrogen and carbon monoxide and various adsorption-desorption reactions, enter as boundary conditions for the transport equations. The analysis enables one to calculate the sensor's voltage response as a function of the air-to-fuel ratio λ and to investigate phenomena such as the magnitude of the voltage jump in going from rich to lean gas mixtures and the λ value at which this jump occurs.

Notizen: Previous investigations have described the development of nongrowing suspension of Verticillium lecanii as a microbial model of the mammalian chiral inversion of the 2-arylpropionic acids (2-APAs). Mechanistic studies in mammals have shown that inversion involves loss of the α-methine proton but retention of the original atoms at the β-methyl position, and a mechanism has been proposed involving enzymatic epimerisation of acyl-CoA thioester derivatives of the substrate. Inversion of the 2-APAs by V. lecanii exhibits extensive intersubstrate variation in the presence, rate, extent, and direction of inversion, which are different from those observed in mammalian systems, possibly indicating differences in the mechanism of inversion between mammalian and microbial cells. This study involved the investigation of proton/deuterium exchange by 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance following incubation of deuterated derivatives of 2-phenylpropionic acid (2-PPA), a model compound, in cell suspensions of V. lecanii and incubation of undeuterated 2-PPA in cell suspensions containing D2O. The results indicated that the inversion of 2-PPA by V. lecanii also involved exchange of the α-methine proton but complete retention on the original atoms at the β-methyl position. No kinetic deuterium isotope effect was observed, indicating that loss of the α-methine proton is not the rate-limiting step of the inversion process. This suggests that the observed differences between microbial and mammalian systems probably involve the stereoselective acyl-CoA thioester formation step and not the subsequent epimerisation of the resultant diastereomers. Notizen: The first large-scale production of 7-aminocephalosporanic acid (7ACA) from cephalosporin C (CPC) using a wholly enzymatic synthesis method is reported here. We produced 7ACA from CPC in as high a molar yield as 85% using the immobilized enzymes D-amino acid oxidase (D-AOD) and glutaryl-7-ACA acylase (GL-acylase). In the first reactor, CPC is converted to keto-adipyl-7-aminocephalosporanic acid (keto-7ACA) using an immobilized D-AOD isolated from a yeast, Trigonopsis variabilis. The keto-7ACA is then spontaneously converted to glutaryl-7-aminocephalosporanic acid (GL-7ACA) via a chemical reaction with hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide is also a product of the D-AOD reaction. Near quantitative conversion of the keto-7ACA to GL-7ACA was observed. The second reactor converts GL-7ACA to 7ACA using an immobilized GL-acylase, which was isolated from a reconbinant Escherichia coli. The final 7ACA crystalline product is a high quality product. The reactions are conducted under very mild aqueous conditions: pH 8.0 and 20° to 25°C. The production of desacetyl side products is minimal. This process is currently being implemented on an industrial scale to produce 7ACA. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
