Notizen: Summary Six healthy volunteers received an iv infusion of 317 mg lysine theophylline (equivalent to 197 mg anhydrous theophylline) in order to calculate theophylline clearance by standard methods. They subsequently received a 20 minute inhalation of nebulised lysine theophylline. Serum and salivary theophylline concentrations were measured and all saliva was collected for the first hour. From these concentrations estimates were made of the distribution of theophylline into the blood and saliva with 40% to 94% identified in the blood. Very high salivary concentrations were reached during the inhalation phase with saliva: serum concentration ratios of between 60 and 1600.

Notizen: [Auszug] A LETTER appeared in NATURE of Oct. 24, 1931, signed by Messrs. Leakey, Hopwood, and Reck, in which, among other conclusions, it is stated that “there is no possible doubt that the human skeleton came from Bed No. 2 and not from Bed No. 4”. This must be taken to mean that the skeleton is to be ...

Notizen: [Auszug] WE are glad to find from Dr. Leakey's letter in NATURE of May 14 that he is in agreement with us in regarding the Oldoway skeleton as an artificial burial, and regret that, in common with everyone else whom we have consulted in this matter, we interpreted his original letter in NATURE of Oct. ...

Notizen: Conclusions The precise mechanism whereby DBCP residues contaminate water supplies is not known. It is, therefore, unlikely that DBCP can be kept out of ground water supplies if current application technology is followed. For this reason, and considering the widespread nature of contamination of well water, it is not likely that further agricultural use of DBCP should be authorized.

Notizen: Abstract Feedback control is sometimes applied to a dynamic system operating in a stochastic environment under circumstances where only a limited number of observations can be made. The optimal positioning of ana priori fixed number of observations is considered. A direct approach to this problem yields a dynamic programming functional equation, while a second approach involving an ancillary observation cost leads to a rapid and practical numerical solution.

Notizen: The activity of a solid, polymer-supported catalyst (a semicrystalline polyethylene film containing grafted, sulfonated styrene) was shown to be altered by cold drawing. The catalytic activity was measured by a test reaction, the dehydration of isopropyl alcohol to give propylene. Catalytic reaction rates were measured with variously drawn films clamped in a differential flow reactor operated at 100°C and 1 atm. The catalytic activity increased with the elongation of the polymer up to a draw ratio of 2.5; the activity decreased upon further drawing. The drawn films were characterized by x-ray diffraction, dynamic mechanical measurements, electron microscopy, birefringence, and density measurements. Since no evidence was found for the formation of surface sites by creation of microcracks, the changes in activity are attributed to modifications in the polymer structure induced by drawing. The kinetics of the catalytic reaction and the data giving percentage crystallinity and crystalline and amorphous orientation factors suggest that, in the undrawn polymer, the catalytically active —SO3H groups form a hydrogen-bonded network, which is excluded from the crystalline regions. Initial elongation partially breaks up the network, allowing more —SO3H groups to bond to alcohol and become catalytically engaged. Elongation beyond a draw ratio of 2.5 leads to a separation of —SO3H groups greater than that required for the formation of the reaction intermediate, which involves the alcohol hydrogen bonded to several —SO3H groups. The combined results of the catalytic kinetics experiments and structural characterizations imply that the preliminary deformation response of the semicrystalline polymer occurs predominantly within the noncrystalline regions and is accommodated by the rigid slip and tilting of crystal lamellae. The hydrogen bonding among the —SO3H groups in the noncrystalline regions hinders lamellar breakup and suppresses the formation of highly aligned fibrillar morphologies.
