Notizen: Using the static form of a system of equations for seismic waves (de la Cruz & Spanos 1989), we show how various compressibilities can be calculated in a straightforward manner. The results obtained have many points of contact with those found in the literature. In particular, we verify all identities among drained compressibilities given in, e.g., Zimmerman (1991), thus providing an alternative route towards them. The undrained compressibility is described within the context of this work and its relation to the various drained compressibilities (Gassmann 1951) is verified. For greater experimental flexibility, we introduce a one-parameter family of compressibilities which includes the drained and the undrained compressibilities as members. The family of compressibilities is also used to obtain an expression for the pore-pressure build-up coefficient. In this work we also address the problem of macroscopic shearing. Experiments are proposed for the determination of the macroscopic shear modulus, leading to natural expressions for ‘Young's modulus’ and ‘Poisson's ratio’ for the porous medium under drained conditions. We also establish connections with Biot's (1956a) parameters.

Notizen: Rough rice (cv. Cypress) from the 1995 season was harvested, dried, and stored in laboratory-scale studies. Treatments included pre-drying conditions, drying conditions, storage temperatures, and storage durations. Temporary wet storage prior to drying affected cooking properties (p〈0.005) and peak viscosity (p〈0.005). Drying treatments affected head rice yield (p〈0.05), cooking properties (p〈0.001), and peak viscosity (p〈0.05). Storage temperature was related (p〈0.05) to cooking properties and peak viscosity via a second-order relationship. Head rice yield and cooking properties were also affected (p〈0.05) by storage duration.

Notizen: The paper describes (a) the research into substances with oestrogenic properties in river systems, (b) the background on why and how these substances are present in river systems, (c) the potential harm which they have through endocrine disruption, and (d) the different techniques for their detection. Results are presented form a preliminary study on the overall oestrogenic potential of sewage effluent being discharged into a river. These results show high levels of oestrogenic potential in the effluent and also in stream water upstream from any sewage-treatment works. The implications for the management of rivers which contain recycled water and possible future research directions in this field are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract– The effect of meal size on the gastric evacuation rate of burbot Lota lota (L.), was determined at a constant temperature of 1.5°C. Burbot were fed vendace Coregonus albula (L.), in varying amounts from 1.0% to 12.6% of burbot weight. Although gastric evacuation rate decreased exponentially with increasing meal size, the absolute amount of food evacuated per day (g. day−1 increased when meal size increased. The estimated maximum daily gastric evacuation rates were 0.8, 1.3 and 1.6 g/day with meal sizes 1%, 5% and 10% of burbot weight (200 g). No difference in gastric evacuation rate was observed between meals of the same size (8 g) but which consisted of either one or three vendace.

Notizen: : Transport of agricultural chemicals in runoff and recharge waters from snowmelt and soil thawing may represent a significant event in terms of annual contaminant loadings in temperate regions. Improved understanding of the melt dynamics of shallow snowpacks is necessary to fully assess the implications for water quality. The objective of this study was to measure the energy balance components of a corn (Zea mays L.) stubble field during the melting of its snowcover. Net radiation (Rn), soil (G), sensible (H), and latent (Q) heat fluxes were measured in a field near Ames, Iowa, during the winter of 1994–1995. Energy consumed by melting including change in energy storage of the snowpack was determined as the residual of the measured energy balance. There was continuous snowcover at the field site for 71 days (maximum depth = 222 mm) followed by an open period of 11 days before additional snowfall and a second melt period. The net radiation and snow melt/energy storage change (5) terms dominated the energy balance during both measurement intervals. Peak daily sensible and latent heat fluxes were below 100 W m−2 on all days except the last day of the second melt period. There was good agreement between predicted and measured values of H and Q during the melting of an aged snow layer but poorer agreement during the melt of fresh snow. Both snowpacks melted rapidly and coincident changes in soil moisture storage were observed. Improved estimates of Q and H, especially for partially open surfaces, will require better characterization of the surface aerodynamic properties and spatially-representative surface temperature measurements.

Notizen: Biochemical and tissue-composition indices were used to determine the impacts of temporary feeding reductions on juvenile Atlantic salmon (4.2g initial weight). Three levels of food reduction (fasting, 20% of control, 50% of control) lasting for 2, 4 or 8 days were compared to a control group (constant feeding at 2.75% of body weight day−1). Ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity and RNA concentrations were used to measure changes in protein synthesis; condition factor (K), liver-somatic index (LSI), visceral-somatic index (VSI), and gut index (GI)were used to provide information on stored energy levels. Results showed that physiological adjustments to decreases or increases in feeding occur very quickly. The most rapid responses were changes in ODC activity (within 2 days) and LSI (2–4 days). Changes in RNA concentrations and K required 4–8 days. There was no apparent effect of the treatments on VSI or GI. Temporary reductions of feeding lasting 2 days or less would not be detected by any index except ODC activity. Changes in the indices are discussed with respect to short-term changes in rates of protein synthesis and energy storage.

Notizen: A 1600 base pair region of the mitochondrial rRNA genes from 74 yellowtail rockfish, collected from three north-east Pacific localities, was amplified via PCR. RFLP analysis yielded a total of 33 restriction sites allowing examination of 139 base pairs or 0·8% of the mtDNA molecule. Essentially no variation was detected within or among the three populations.
