Beschreibung: The Hellas basin is a dominant feature in the ancient, southern cratered highlands of Mars. The east rim of Hellas is a complex geologic region affected by volcanism, tectonism, and channeling. A detailed study of the area between 27.5-42.4 degrees S and 260-275 degrees W was initiated to analyze the processes forming surface materials and to decipher the evolution of this geologically important highland area. Major units include Hadriaca and Tyrrhena Paterae in the north and Hesperian and Amazonian channeled plains and outflow channels in the south. A brief discussion of the findings is presented.

Beschreibung: Numerous mesas and irregular, channel-cut escarpments south of Harmakhis and Reull Valles suggesting at least two resurfacing events with subsequent periods of erosion are revealed from detailed geologic mapping of three adjacent 1:500,000-scale quadrangles (MTM-40262, -40267, -40272). Also, two distinct episodes of surface water runoff, each from different styles of water release, are evident. Geologic mapping is based on 1:500,000-scale photomosaics of the Harmakhis vallis region, and is an outgrowth of preliminary regional geologic mapping on a 1:2,000,000-scale on the east rim of Hellas Basin.

Beschreibung: The east rim of Hellas basin is a complex geologic region affected by volcanic, tectonic, channeling, and resurfacing processes. A regional geologic map of the area between 27.5-42.4 degrees S and 260-275 degrees W was compiled in order to establish general stratigraphic relationships between and among the geologic units exposed in the region. The southern one-third of the regional map, the area convered by three MGM 1:500,000 quadrangles -40272, -40267, and -40262, is to be mapped in more detail in this project. Outflow channel deposits were subdivided into three facies and interpreted. A geologic sketch map of the Hadriaca Patera region on the east rim of the Hellas basin is presented.

Beschreibung: The east rim of the Hellas basin, one of the largest obvious impact features on Mars, is studied. The distribution of geologic materials in the region is documented, and their modes of origin are constrained based on their geomorphologic characteristics. Superposition relationship and crater size-frequency distributions allow the relative ages of the geologic units to be determined and provide information regarding the timing and extent of the geologic processes emplacing and modifying the surface materials. Systematic analysis of the degradation of the Hellas basin is used to illustrate the sequence of events and interplay of geologic processes which control the evolution of many regions on Mars.
