Beschreibung: The availability of African lungfish (Protopterus aethiopicus) in many communities in Uganda is declining. Indigenous efforts to culture this fish usually produce poor yields and depend on feeding fish fry, minced meat, and leftover food. This study evaluates three formulated diets (diet-1, diet-2, diet-3) fed to wild caught lungfish fingerlings reared in indoor tanks for 77 days.Experimental fish gradually accepted sinking pellets, and marginal increases in average body weight were observed. Mean (± SE) final weight (15.86 ± 0.80 g) for fish fed on diet-3 was significantly higher (p 〈 0.05) than fish fed diet-1 and diet-2. Specific growth rates (SGR) for diet-3 were significantly higher (p 〈 0.05) than diet-1, and marginally more than diet-2 (0.37 ± 0.04 %/d). Feed conversions were similar (p 〉0.05), ranging from 1.61 ± 0.26 to 2.07 ± 0.11. Survivals afteran 11-week culture were relatively low (〈 60%), but generally increased (R2 = 0.667, P = 0.007)with increasing dietary proteins. Diet-3 had a significant higher survival rate (p〈 0.05) than diet-1 and diet-2. Significant growth performance was attained with diet-3. This study demonstrated that sinking fish feed pellets can be used to culture wild-caught African fingerlings in captivity.

Notizen: Abstract This note has two goals. The first is to give an explicit description (Theorem 1) of the duals of certain weighted products ℛ h of a countable family of Banach spaces. These products include the usual spaces of interactions which arise in statistical mechanics. The second goal is to use this description to prove that if the factor spaces are finite dimensional and the weight functionh satisfies a certain growth condition, then the pressure is Fréchet differentiable wherever it is Gateaux differentiable (hence is Fréchet differentiable in a denseG δ subset).

Notizen: The replacement of fish meal with soybean meal in fish diets has met with varying degrees of success. Quite often, poor responses to high soybean meal diets are either due to shifts in the nutrient profile or a reduced palatability of the diet when fish meal is removed. The present research was designed to evaluate the replacement of menhaden fish meal with solvent-extracted soybean meal in practical diets containing 10% poultry by-product meal and formulated to contain 40% protein, 8% lipid, and a total sulfur amino acid content of 〉 3.0% of the protein. The response of red snapper (mean initial weight 10.9 g) to diets containing graded levels of fish meal (30,20, 10, 0%) as well as the response to a low fish meal diet (10%) without poultry by-product meal were evaluated over a 6-wk growth period. Significant (P± 0.05) differences in final mean weight, percent weight gain, and feed conversion were observed. Final weights (percent gain) ranged from 30.9 g (185.5%) for fish offered diets with 30% fish meal to 12.6 g (16.3%) for fish offered diets with 0% fish meal. Corresponding feed conversion efficiencies ranged from 60.1% to 7.7%. No significant differences were observed for survival between treatment means. Although there was a clear reduction in performance as the fish meal was replaced with soybean meal, the use of 10% poultry by-product meal or 10% fish meal resulted in similar performance of the fish. This is a good indication that poultry by-product meal does not have palatability problems and could be used as a substitute. The present findings suggest that replacing fish meal with high levels of soybean meal appears to reduce the palatability of the diet. While the cost reducing benefit, with respect to the replacement of fish meal, has been shown with other species, before high levels of inclusion can be efficiently utilized further research is needed to address the palatability problems observed with red snapper.

Notizen: Two synthetic estrogens, diethylstilbestrol (DES) and ethynylestradiol (EE), were orally administered to 8.7 mm gonadally undifferentiated Oreochromis niloticus fry for a period of 28 days in an outdoor setting. Diethylstilbestrol was administered at doses of 100 mg, 200 mg, and 400 mg per kg diet. Ethynylestradiol was administered at 50 mg, 100 mg, and 200 mg per kg diet. One group received a non-hormone-treated feed. Hormone treatments produced significantly more (P 〈 0.05) than 50% females indicating that genotypic male fish were sex-reversed to phenotypic females. No rate of estrogen administration resulted in a 100% female population. Ethynylestradiol (EE) treatments resulted in 58–65% females, 32–35% males, and 3–9% hermaphrodites. Diethylstilbestrol (DES) treatments resulted in 60–80% females, 13–37% males, and 1–7% hermaphrodites. The DES 400 treatment was the most effective in altering phenotypic sex: 80% females, 13% males, 7% hermaphrodites.

Notizen: The androgenic and anabolic potential of fluoxymesterone (FM) was evaluated by incorporating the hormone into the feed of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus(L.) fry. Phenotypic all-male populations were produced when FM was given at 1, 5 and 25mg/kg of feed. Fry fed methyltestosterone (MT) at 60 mg/kg of feed and 0-2 mg of FM per kg of feed had a sex ratio of 97-7% and 87-3% phenotypic males. No positive anabolic effect was evident in response to adding FM or MT to the feed at the end of the 28-day treatment period or after an additional 6 weeks of growth without hormone. Growth was less for fry which received 25 mg/kg of FM compared to those receiving lesser rates of FM, 60 mg/kg MT, and controls.

Notizen: Three experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of oral administration of trenbolone acetate and 17a-methyltestosterone on sex determination in 28-day-old bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus Rafinesque, fry. Multiple androgen doses and various treatment durations were tested. All treatments produced fewer males and females than did the control group (P 〈 0.01). All concentrations of both androgens produced a high proportion of intersex fish (38–81%). The number of males and females declined with the increase in androgen dose or treatment duration. Sterile fish were found in treatments with a higher dose rate or a longer treatment period. The predominance of intersex fish and reductions of both males and females in the androgen treatments suggest that gonadal development of both genotypic male and female fish were being altered by the hormone treatment.
