Beschreibung: The dataset compiles reconstructed changes in bottom water temperature and global ice volume from 0 to 17 Ma using δ18O in conjunction with Mg/Ca records of the infaunal benthic foraminifer, O. umbonatus from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 130-806 (equatorial Pacific; ~2500 m). This dataset covers the middle Miocene to present (17-0 Ma) and has an average temporal resolution of ~0.2 Ma. Application of the new equations to the Site 130-806 record leads to the suggestion that global ice volume was greater than today after the Middle Miocene Climate Transition (~14 Ma). ODP Site 130-806 bottom waters cooled and freshened as the Pacific zonal sea surface temperature gradient increased, and climate cooled through the Pliocene, prior to the Plio‐Pleistocene glaciation of the Northern Hemisphere.

Beschreibung: The early Pliocene warm phase was characterized by high sea surface temperatures and a deep thermocline in the eastern equatorial Pacific. A new hypothesis suggests that the progressive closure of the Panamanian seaway contributed substantially to the termination of this zonally symmetric state in the equatorial Pacific. According to this hypothesis, intensification of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) - induced by the closure of the gateway - was the principal cause of equatorial Pacific thermocline shoaling during the Pliocene. In this study, twelve Panama seaway sensitivity experiments from eight ocean/climate models of different complexity are analyzed to examine the effect of an open gateway on AMOC strength and thermocline depth. All models show an eastward Panamanian net throughflow, leading to a reduction in AMOC strength compared to the corresponding closed-Panama case. In those models that do not include a dynamic atmosphere, deepening of the equatorial Pacific thermocline appears to scale almost linearly with the throughflow-induced reduction in AMOC strength. Models with dynamic atmosphere do not follow this simple relation. There are indications that in four out of five models equatorial wind-stress anomalies amplify the tropical Pacific thermocline deepening. In summary, the models provide strong support for the hypothesized relationship between Panama closure and equatorial Pacific thermocline shoaling.

Beschreibung: The Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) is thought to have contributed substantially to high global sea levels during the interglacials of Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5e and 11. Geological evidence suggests that the mass loss of the GrIS was greater during the peak interglacial of MIS 11 than MIS 5e, despite a weaker boreal summer insolation. We address this conundrum by using the three-dimensional thermomechanical ice-sheet model Glimmer forced by CCSM3 climate model output for MIS 5e and MIS 11 interglacial time slices. Our results suggest a stronger sensitivity of the GrIS to MIS 11 climate forcing than to MIS 5e forcing. Besides stronger greenhouse gas radiative forcing, the greater MIS 11 GrIS mass loss relative to MIS 5e is attributed to a larger oceanic heat transport towards high latitudes by a stronger Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. The vigorous MIS 11 ocean overturning, in turn, is related to a stronger wind-driven salt transport from low to high latitudes promoting North Atlantic Deep Water formation. The orbital insolation forcing, which causes the ocean current anomalies, is discussed.

Beschreibung: This dataset includes measurements on mixed layer planktonic foraminifera from IODP/ODP sites for boron isotopes and trace elements. Boron isotopes were measured after column chemistry and solution analyses on a Neptune multi collector ICPMS, while trace elements were measured on pre-columned aliquots of the same samples, using Element XR ICP-MS. Furthermore, the dataset includes the seawater pH and atmospheric CO2 calculated from B isotopes measurements and Mg/Ca-temperature estimates, for no-vital effect treatment (T. sac-vital effect corrections at Eocene d11Bsw conditions result in d11B offsets within analytical uncertainty), and no pH correction on Mg/Ca-temperature relationship (assuming T. sac like species). Carbonate system calculations incorporate MyAMI ion-pairing corrections (https://github.com/MathisHain/MyAMI), and surface Omega values specific for the Eocene and the paleo-latitude of the core location. Propagation of uncertainties for pH and CO2 is completed through 1000 Monte Carlo simulations.
