    Notizen: Efforts have been made to improve the method of using direct nonradiative energy transfer to follow the interdiffusion of polymer molecules across an interface. Two data analysis techniques are developed. The first one presents the extent of interdiffusion in terms of an acceptor concentration distribution; the second one recovers the diffusion coefficient and the concentration profile based on a Fickian diffusion model. The first method is model independent while the second method can be readily extended for other diffusion models. Polydisperse systems are characterized by a distribution of molecular mobilities. The energy transfer experiment provides a mean diffusion coefficient averaged over the sample history. For such systems, the concept of "instantaneous'' effective diffusion coefficient and a method to derive it are discussed. These techniques are examined using computer simulations and tested in the study of molecular diffusion process of a poly(butyl methacrylate) latex system.

    Notizen: An anomalous magnetoelastic wave is observed in a 0.127-mm-diam nickel wire using ordinary magnetostrictive transducers. The group velocity of this wave is constant over a frequency range from 1 to 3.5 MHz, and equal to the shear wave velocity of the material (3 km/s for nickel). However, the phase velocity of this wave is extremely high (up to 416 km/s was observed) and in the opposite direction to the group velocity. This anomaly disappears when an axial dc current is applied; a normal Wiedemann-type signal appears at the same group delay. This wave is different from previously known backward waves. This wave also appears in some other magnetostrictive materials.

    Notizen: Supersonic beams of clusters of Si and Ge atoms have been produced by laser vaporization followed by supersonic expansion in a helium carrier. The cluster beams were characterized by F2(7.9 eV) and ArF(6.4 eV) excimer laser ionization accompanied by time-of-flight mass analysis. In addition, the feasibility of a resonant two-photon ionization (R2PI) spectroscopic study was explored by two-color experiments involving initial excitation with the second (2.36 eV) and third (3.54 eV) harmonics of the Nd:YAG followed by excimer laser ionization. All two-photon ionization processes were found to produce extensive fragmentation of the larger clusters. The observed fragmentation pattern for the silicon and germanium clusters were remarkably similar to each other, but drastically different from that seen for metal clusters in the same apparatus. Unlike metal clusters, which tend to lose one atom at a time, these semiconductor clusters appear to fragment by a fission process, the daughter ions falling almost exclusively in the size range from 6 to 11 atoms. Time delay studies in the two-color experiments established that clusters of both Si and Ge have excited electronic states with lifetimes of approximately 100 ns. This again is dramatically different from the behavior found with metal clusters, and indicates the feasibility of R2PI spectroscopy on these cold semiconductor particles. The existence of such long-lived excited states indicates that there is probably an energy gap between the band of electronic states being excited and the ground electronic state.

    Notizen: A transient line source, either mechanical or electrical, on the surface of a piezoelectric medium will excite electromagnetic acoustic (EMAC) head waves between quasi-electromagnetic surface disturbances and quasi-acoustic waves. EMAC head waves are acoustic in nature, with plane fronts practically parallel to the surface and traveling at acoustic speeds. One such plane wave front is observed experimentally in a thick lead titanate-zirconate plate in accordance with theory.

    Notizen: Recently, a complete formulation of the transient surface excitation problem for piezoelectric materials has suggested the existence of a type of electrical sources on the surface not traditionally considered in piezoelectric transduction. This letter shows that these additional sources correspond to electric current dipoles. It is shown that the wave forms, or the frequency dependence, of waves generated by these sources are different from those generated by traditionally studied sources such as mechanical stresses and electric currents. These characteristics can be used to identify the contribution of such sources. Schottky and p-n junctions on the surface of a semiconductive material are suggested as the experimental implementation of the new sources. In addition to piezoelectric transduction, current dipoles can also be used to generate electromagnetic waves in a nonpiezoelectric medium. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: An endo-polygalacturonase (RAPG) from Rhizopus arrhizus grown on rotted apricot has been purified and characterized. Through dialysis, ammonium sulfate fractionation, and successive chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, Sephadex G-100 and Sephadex G-75 columns, a 274-fold purification was achieved. RAPG was stable at pH 3.8–6.5. Its optimum activity was at pH 5.0. The activation energy (Ea) was 11.9 Kcal/mole. The Q1 0 value was 2.01 between 20° and 30°C. RAPG has a Vmax at 1.430 μmoles reducing product/min, and Km at 0.054% pectic acid (DP = 70). Both sodium and potassium ions stimulated RAPG activity in the 0.05–0.10M range. Tannic acid was an effective inhibitor, while chlorogenic, caffeic, p-coumaric and gallic acids were not. The molecular weight of RAPG was 30,270 by SDS-gel electro-phoresis. Both viscosity drop and thin layer chromatography of the end products study proved that RAPG performed a random mechanism in the depolymerization process. RAPG also showed a synergistic effect when tomato pectinesterase was added to the reaction mixture with pectin as the substrate.
