Notizen: Six six-row Nordic spring barley genotypes (Hordeum vulgare L.) were assessed in the field in Finland (1994 and 1995) for resistance to Rhynchosporium secalis (Oud.) J.J. Davis, the causal pathogen of scald, in artificially inoculated plots. The barleys were known not to contain major genes for resistance to scald and the purpose of these experiments was to identify quantitative differences in resistance to scald which might be exploitable in a breeding programme. Disease development was monitored, grain yield and yield components were recorded, and these data were compared with measurements taken from plants in plots kept free of disease. Data, averaged over both years, for disease development on the uppermost three leaves — areas under disease progress curves, terminal severity and apparent infection rates — indicated that ‘Verner’, ‘Pohto’ and ‘Pokko’ were symptomatically significantly more resistant to scald than ‘Arve’, ‘Loviisa’ and Jo 1599. Grain yields, thousand-grain weights, test weights and proportions of plump grains were all significantly reduced in plots inoculated with scald compared with those kept free of disease; ‘Verner’ appeared to be the most useful genotype for use in crossing programmes to improve scald resistance in Finnish barleys.

Notizen: Summary Twenty Finnish isolates of Rhynchosporium secalis (Oud.) J.J. Davis, the causal agent of scald, were taken from infected barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) plants and inoculated on to seedlings of a differential series of barley containing a range of major genes for resistance to the fungus, as well as on to six Nordic 6-row spring barleys and three winter ryes (Secale cereale L.). These fungal isolates derived from four sites and three host varieties. Disease development was monitored on two leaves of seedlings in the greenhouse employing a standard scale, and on adult plants in the field by assessing the diseased area on the three uppermost leaves. A comparison was also made between the pathogenicity and virulence of ten Finnish and ten Canadian R. secalis isolates. The Finnish isolates varied in virulence, but with the exception of Algerian (CI 1179) seedlings and adult La Mesita (CI 7565) all seedlings and adult plants of the entire differential series were resistant to all isolates. Canadian isolates were, on average, less virulent than Finnish isolates. All the Nordic checks were susceptible to all Finnish and seven Canadian isolates, but differences in the degree of susceptibility were evident. Isolates of R. secalis from barley were non-pathogenic on rye, isolates from Elymus repens L. were non-pathogenic on barley and rye, and isolates from rye were only pathogenic on rye. Finnish R. secalis isolates contain no redundant pathogenic diversity. The differential series represents a useful, but as yet untapped, source of resistance to R. secalis for Finnish barley breeders.

Notizen: Abstract Populus x wilsocarpa, a hybrid of important ornamental value, cannot be seed-propagated, nor grafted, since a compatible rootstock has not been identified. A micropropagation protocol consisting of a series of steps was therefore developed to facilitate the commercial production of this species. The technique involved the transfer of swelling buds to a growth initiation medium with the following composition: N6 macronutrients, MS micronutrients and vitamins supplemented with 0.5 mg l-1 BAP. The best buds were from dormant twigs, stored at 0–2°C and then forced to burst prior to culture initiation. Shoot multiplication was on a basal WPM medium including 0.1 mg l-1 BAP and 0.001 mg l-1 NAA. Shoot elongation and rooting was also on a basal WPM medium supplemented with 1.0 mg l-1 GA3 followed by a transfer to a peat-perlite mix in the greenhouse.

Beschreibung: Results are presented from Cluster crossings of the acceleration region of two inverted-V auroras located in the poleward part of an extensive substorm bulge. The particle and field data are used to infer the acceleration potentials of the arcs and their distribution in altitude and latitude. The C1 data are consistent with a symmetric potential pattern, composed of two negative U potentials and one positive U potential in between, and the C3 and C4 data are consistent with an asymmetric pattern, where the dominating potential structure extends deep into the polar cap boundary (PCB) region. The two patterns may either correspond to different stages of evolution of the same double arc system or represent two longitudinally separated double arc systems. For all spacecraft, the potential well of the poleward arc extends into the PCB region, whereas the density cavity does not but remains confined to R1. This suggests that the Alfvénic activity observed within the PCB region prevents the cavity formation, consistent with the associated FACs being roughly balanced over this region. The results show that Alfvénic and quasi-static acceleration operates jointly in the PCB region, varying from being about equally important (on C1) to being predominantly quasi-static (on C3/C4). The presence (absence) of an upward electron beam, associated with a positive potential structure and a downward current, observed by C1 (C4/C3) is expected from its short life time, shorter than the time lag between the Cluster spacecraft. The evolution involves both a broadening and a density reduction of the associated downward current sheet to below the critical current density above which parallel electric fields will form. The deepest potential well of 13 kV observed by C4 was located in Region 1, adjacent to the PCB region and coinciding with the deepest density cavity, with a minimum density of 0.1 cm−3. The interface between Region 1 and the PCB region, coinciding with the steep density gradient, appears to be the leading edge of the cavity.

Beschreibung: We analyze plasma, magnetic and electric field data for a flux transfer event (FTE) to highlight improvements in our understanding of these transient reconnection signatures resulting from high resolution data. The ∼20 s-long, reverse FTE, which occurred south of the geomagnetic equator near dusk, was immersed in super-Alfvénic flow. The field line twist is illustrated by the behavior of flows parallel/perpendicular to the magnetic field. Four-spacecraft timing and energetic particle pitch angle anisotropies indicate a flux rope (FR) connected to the northern hemisphere and moving southeast. The flow forces evidently overcame the magnetic tension. The high-speed flows inside the FR were different from those outside. The external flows were perpendicular to the field as expected for draping of the external field around the FR. Modeling the FR analytically, we adopt a non-force free approach since the current perpendicular to the field is non-zero. It reproduces many features of the observations.

Beschreibung: Electric field measurements from cometary environments are very rare, but can provide important information on how plasma waves help fashion the plasma environment. The long dwelling time of the Rosetta spacecraft close to comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko promises to improve this state. We here present the first electric field measurements from 67P, performed by the Rosetta dual Langmuir probe instrument LAP. Measurements of the electric field from cometocentric distances of 149 and 348 km are presented together with estimates of plasma density changes. Persistent wave activity around the local H 2 O + lower hybrid frequency is observed, with the largest amplitudes observed at sharp plasma gradients. We demonstrate that the necessary requirements for the lower hybrid drift instability to be operating are fulfilled. We suggest that lower hybrid waves are responsible for the creation of a warm electron population, the origins of which have been unknown so far, by heating ambient electrons in the magnetic field-parallel direction.

Beschreibung: We study the applicability of spheroidal model particles for simulating the single-scattering optical properties of mineral dust aerosols. To assess the range of validity of this model, calculations are compared to laboratory observations for five different dust samples at two wavelengths. We further investigate whether the best-fit shape distributions of spheroids for different mineral dust samples have any similarities that would allow us to suggest a generic first-guess shape distribution for suspended mineral dust. We find that best-fit shape distributions vary considerably between samples and even between wavelengths, making definitive suggestions for a shape distribution difficult. The best-fit shape distribution also depends strongly on the refractive index assumed and the cost function adopted. However, a power-law shape distribution which favours those spheroids that depart most from the spherical shape is found to work well in most cases. To reproduce observed asymmetry parameters, best results are obtained with a power-law shape distribution with an exponent around three.
