    Notizen: Constitutive equations are developed for nonlinear (and linear) nonlocal electromagnetic elastic solids that possess continuous memory of past fields. The consequence of the second law of thermodynamics is studied. Phenomenological laws are given for special cases of nonlinear optics, nonlinear magnetism, conduction, and elastic dielectrics. A continuum theory is constructed for memory-dependent elastic superconductors.

    Notizen: The formation of a plastic zone, in the form of a linear array of inclined edge dislocations in front of a mode-I crack in plane strain, is studied. The direction of the force field on an edge dislocation due to the crack load allows for the determination of the plastic zone as a function of the inclination angle. The dislocation distribution along the plastic zone is found from force equilibrium considerations. The results show the presence of a dislocation-free zone (DFZ) and a shrinking of the plastic zone size with greater angle of inclination. The latter angle does not seem to influence the DFZ size. The way in which we determined the stress field allows us to study the influence of defects on the plastic zone formation.

    Notizen: Small-scale plastic yielding at crack tips is studied by means of nonlocal elasticity. Plastic lines along the crack line of a mode III crack modeled by an array of dislocations. It is shown that plastic yield begins after a definite value of load as a consequence of nonlocality. The length of plastic zone and the dislocation distribution are determined as functions of the applied load. The results are in good agreement with experimental observations

    Notizen: A continuum theory is proposed for liquid crystals whose molecular elements can expand and contract, in addition to undergoing translations and rotations. This is the microstretch continuum theory, generalizing microplar theory of liquid crystals. Constitutive equations are developed for arbitrarily shaped molecular elements. Thermodynamical restrictions are studied. The theory is then specialized for breathing rodlike liquid crystals. Equilibrium configuration for the microstretch motion is studied.

    Notizen: Abstract The micromorphic theory of Eringen is applied to study the tube flow of blood. The blood is considered to be a deformable suspension, with constitutive relations of the form of those of simple microfluids. By means of energy consideration, a relation is established between the local concentration parameter and the measure of rotationality involving both macro-and micromotions. The tube flow problem is then solved with some analyses on viscosity coefficients and boundary conditions. The results obtained indicate an integrated explanation of various important physical phenomena associated with blood flow, such as the tube size dependence of the apparent viscosity and the non-uniform concentration distribution over a tube cross section.

    Notizen: Abstract A continuum theory of rigid suspensions is introduced. Balance laws and constitutive equations of micropolar continuum theory are modified and extended for the characterization of dense rigid suspensions. Thermodynamic restrictions are imposed. The general theory is specialized to the case of dense rigid fiber and spherical suspensions. Dilute suspensions in Newtonian fluids are obtained as special cases. Motions of rigid fiber suspensions in viscometric flows are determined as applications of the theory.
