Notizen: Little resistance against Mycosphaerella pinodes is available in pea. In this work 78 accessions of Pisum were screened for resistance to M. pinodes. Fourteen accessions showed a good level of resistance in seedlings under controlled conditions, and in mature plants in the field. The highest levels of resistance were found in P. fuivum, followed by P. sativum ssp. eiatius and P. sativum ssp. syriacum. Resistance of five selected accessions was effective against different isolates of M. pinodes originating from different countries. Resistant accessions reported in this paper have been successfully hybridized with field pea cultivars.

Notizen: The desi and kabuli chickpeas are characterized, among other things, by their seed coats being thicker in the desi than in the kabuli type. The inheritance of seed coat thickness, and its relation to flower colour and seed size, was studied. Seed coat thickness exhibits monogenic inheritance, the thin kabuli seed coat being the recessive character. Linkage was found between seed coat thickness and flower colour, the recombinant fraction being 0.19. No relationship was found between seed coat thickness and seed size. The role of these characters in the evolution of the chickpea is discussed.

Notizen: The genetics of resistance of common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) to broomrape (Orobanche crenata Forsk.) was studied for two years by using the P1, P2, F1, BC1, BC2, F2 F3, and F4 generations obtained from crosses between resistant and susceptible lines. Resistant lines were selected by screening a world collection m a naturally infested plot. Resistance was tested both under field and greenhouse conditions. The best index to measure resistance was the number of emerged broomrapes per host plant. The results fit the additive-dominance model. The main component of the variation was additivity; dominance and interaction effects seemed to depend on the environment. When dominance is expressed, a low number is dominant over a high number of broomrapes per host plant.

Notizen: Five pairs of near isogenic lines (NILs) for the gene for single vs. double pod were used to study the effect of this character on yield and its components (seeds per plant, yield per plant and seed weight). The NILs were sown in 2 years at five locations in ihe first year and four locations in the second. Combined analysis of variance was applied to t he data and no significant differences between isolines were found, but there were significant genotype– location interaction effects for yield and seeds per plant. For both characters the double–podded lines were more stable than the single–podded lines. Although there were significant differences between the five genotypes lor yield per planl and seed weight, the differentes between single– and double–podded lines were almost nil. The results indicate that the double–pod gene has a positive effect on the stability of yield and is not linked to any other gene responsible Tor seed size in chickpea

Notizen: Two recently detected, promising CMS systems in faba bean have opened up new possibilities in hybrid breeding. This study was conducted to determine hybrid performance and heterosis of 33 intra-pool and 66 inter-pool crosses from a factorial of six European small-seeded (Minor), six European large-seeded (Major), and eight Mediterranean faba bean lines. The parent lines and F1 crosses were evaluated at two German and seven Mediterranean environments for anthesis, maturity, yield, yield components and plant height. Yield in the Mediterranean environments was 60% of that in the German environments. European Minor lines and their intra-pool crosses were unadapted to Mediterranean environments and yielded only 31 % compared with the Mediterranean lines and their crosses, whereas European Major genotypes yielded 58%. In German environments the European crosses yielded 107% of the Mediterranean crosses. Heterotic yield increase over the parental mean was largest for European Minor x Mediterranean inter-pool crosses, amounting to 95% in the Mediterranean and 73% in German environments. Our results confirmed the expectation of an increased heterosis in inter-pool over intra-pool hybrids and poor adaptation of European genotypes in Mediterranean environments. In the latter, Mediterranean intra-pool hybrids were the most promising, whereas in Germany inter-pool hybrids of the European Minor × Mediterranean type were most promising.

Notizen: Orobanche crenata (broomrape) is an important constraint to pea (Pisum sativum) cultivation in the Mediterranean area, because little resistance is available in commercial crop varieties. Field experiments have demonstrated that some resistance is present in a number of P. sativum and P. fulvum accessions. The goal of this work was to characterize such resistance. The Pisum–O. crenata interaction and the resistance symptoms were studied under controlled conditions by using Petri dish and polyethylene bag assays. The content of phenolics and peroxidase activity in host tissue from infected and non-infected plants were also measured. Resistance and avoidance mechanisms, acting at different developmental stages of the parasite, have been identified, including low stimulation of O. crenata seed germination, unsuccessful penetration of host roots, delay in post-attachment tubercle development and necrosis of the attached tubercles. Infection caused an increase in the content of total soluble phenolics in some Pisum genotypes. Peroxidase activity was higher in resistant than in susceptible accessions. Results obtained with different Pisum genotypes showed that resistance is the result of several mechanisms acting at different stages of the infection process. Resistance is also related to increased levels of peroxidase activity in host roots.

Notizen: The effect of early and late sowing dates on the establishment of Orobanche crenata Forsk. (crenate broomrape) in resistant and susceptible cultivars of faba bean (Vicia faba L.) and vetch (Vicia sativa L.) were studied over four seasons in southern Spain. Differences in establishment, development and shoot emergence of the parasite were compared. With resistant faba bean and vetch cultivars, there was reduced attachment and shoot emergence of O. crenata with all sowing dates. Susceptible cultivars were more severely affected by the parasite with early sowing. Orobanche crenata development was also delayed in resistant cultivars. Crop yield, estimated by the number of pods per plant, decreased with late sowings. The combined use of resistant cultivars and early sowing is a useful tool as part of an integrated control strategy. Resistant cultivars allow early sowing (with low O. crenata attack), thus avoiding yield losses due to the short crop cycle with late sowing.

Notizen: Orobanche crenata (broomrape) is a root parasite that represents the major constraint for pea (Pisum sativum) cultivation in the Mediterranean area and the Middle East. The efficacy of available control methods is minimal and breeding for O. crenata resistance is considered the most promising strategy of control. Only moderate levels of incomplete resistance are available in pea germplasm. In order to identify and map the quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling the trait, 115 F2 plants derived from the cross between a susceptible and a resistant parent were analysed using isozymes, random amplified polymorphic DNA and sequence tagged site markers. F2-derived F3 lines were studied for O. crenata resistance under field conditions. The linkage map was constructed with MAPMAKER V2.0. Of 217 markers, 120 could be mapped into 21 linkage groups. Linkage groups consisted of 13 to two marker loci covering 1770 cM. The mean inter-marker distance was 17.64 cM. Simple interval mapping (SIM) and composite interval mapping (CIM) were performed using QTL Cartographer. The CIM approach using five cofactors was clearly the most efficient way to locate putative QTL. Two QTL for O. crenata resistance (Ocp1 and Ocp2), explaining only a moderate portion of the observed variation (9.6% and 11.4% respectively), were detected.

Notizen: There is an increasing interest in the legume species Medicago truncatula as a model plant for structural and functional genomic studies that can be used to identify agronomically important genes in legumes. Field screening has shown very high levels of resistance to Orobanche crenata in M. truncatula. However, in vitro studies with O. crenata, Orobanche foetida, Orobanche ramosa and Orobanche minor showed useful variation among accessions at early stages of the parasite–host interaction. Significant differences were observed in the levels of germination of O. crenata and O. foetida seeds induced by different accessions of M. truncatula. Only limited germination was observed on accession SA-4327. All accessions induced little O. ramosa and O. minor germination. Accessions also varied in the number of O. crenata and O. foetida attachments supported, with few developing on accession SA-27774. The variation observed for induction of germination and of subsequent attachment will be useful to isolating and characterizing genes involved in the early stages of Orobanche–host plant interaction and for the study of the biosynthetic pathways of production for germination stimulants.

Notizen: Results on the inheritance of 6 enzyme systems: LDH, PGM, FDH, SKD, SOD, AAT from seeds of Vicia faba and the linkage relationships among these isozyme loci are presented. The allozymes at each one of these loci behaved in a codominant manner and segregated in the expected Mendelian ratio. Linkage tests between these loci showed that they segregate independently.
