    Notizen: The evolution in surface morphology of platinum modified nickel aluminide (Ni,Pt)Aloxidation coatings during thermo-mechanical testing has been evaluated. One type of test consistedof cyclic oxidation between an upper temperature of 1150°C and a lower temperature varying fromroom temperature to 1050°C. The other type of test was cycling between 1000°C/1150°C under anapplied compressive stress. Profilometry using optical interferometry was used to quantify thesurface “rumpling”. First and second-order statistical parameters including RMS roughness and theauto-correlation function were calculated from the profilometry measurements. The results indicatethat the grain structure of the aluminide coating plays a major role in the early stages of rumplingand set its wavelength. Also, the superimposed compressive stress during thermal cycling leads toan asymmetry in the rumpling pattern with respect with the loading axis as well as cracking alongthe applied stress direction

    Notizen: We have observed progressive damage due to reabsorption of stimulated emission in optically pumped laser-quality GaInN–GaN multiple quantum wells. The degradation occurred on a time scale consistent with the lifetime of electrically pumped lasers incorporating the same active region, suggesting that the failure mechanism was in part catastrophic optical damage, and not just heating in the p contact and p cladding as is often assumed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: This work summarizes results of a simple procedure to incorporate dopants into the near surface region of single-crystal sapphire. We demonstrate the formation of iron-doped and chromium-doped sapphire thin films by solid-phase epitaxial growth. Amorphous alumina films of about 200–350 nm thickness were deposited onto single-crystal sapphire substrates. Fe or Cr ions were introduced into the films during deposition. A post-deposition thermal process was performed in oxidizing ambients at 800–1400 °C to induce epitaxial growth and to incorporate dopants. The epitaxial relationship of the grown film with the substrate was confirmed by both ion channeling and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy. The growth kinetics were determined by time-resolved reflectivity measurements for different dopant concentrations. Ion channeling angular scans revealed that the Fe or Cr ions are incorporated onto octahedral sites (Al3+ sites) in the corundum structure as expected in equilibrium. External optical transmittance measurements exhibited absorption in the near ultraviolet range associated with the Fe3+ state. The substitution of Cr for Al3+ was also confirmed by the observation of R1 and R2 luminescence lines characteristic of ruby. The doping procedure has potential applications in the fabrication of thin film planar optical waveguides and thin film stress sensors. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: An analytical model is presented to describe the influence of sample-probe interactions on the shape of spectroscopic lines. By considering the discrete sampling of spatial property variations using a focused probe, the model predicts gradient-induced line broadening, as well as probe channeling near free surfaces. The magnitude of sample-probe interactions is governed by two system parameters: the probe size and the spatial property gradient. Furthermore, certain spatial heterogeneities are found to contribute appreciably to the signal and its associated line shape over distances several times the probe size. Experimental observations in fluorescence spectroscopy are used to evaluate the line-shape model. Spectra measured along an embedded ruby fiber under a residual stress gradient are in good agreement with those calculated using the model. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The essential steps required to create GaN seed crystals for bulk crystal growth from thick films are described. These steps include the growth of low-dislocation-density GaN films using a hydride vapor-phase epitaxy route, the separation of the films from the sapphire substrate on which they are grown, and the subsequent growth of GaN on both sides of the free-standing films. These steps are illustrated with examples that emphasize the growth of material with low threading dislocations.

    Notizen: The effect of low concentrations of Y, Er, and Cr solutes on the amorphous-to-γ transformation and on the γ-to-α transformation in aluminum oxide has been studied in situ by time-resolved reflectivity. The activation energies of the two transformations with these dopants are the same as in undoped alumina, being 4.1 ± 0.1 and 5.2 ± eV, respectively. Although not affecting the activation energies, Y, Er, and Cr do affect the transformation kinetics. Y and Cr ions decrease the γ-to-α transformation velocity and, over the limited range studied, do so in proportion to their concentration. Concentrations of Er as low as ∼6 ppm retard the γ-to-α transformation and concentrations of 32 ppm essentially stop the transformation occurring within the times and temperatures accessible within the present experiment, thereby preventing quantification of the effect of Er on the α-phase transformation. Erbium also retards the amorphous-to-γ transformation relative to undoped alumina whereas yttrium and chromium accelerate it.

    Notizen: Complete amplitude-displacement-frequency spectra for a lever of an atomic force microscope have been measured and used to determine surface forces in air. Two ac techniques were used to measure the shift in resonant frequency of the Ni lever, as a function of separation from a mica surface. A strong, short-range force was observed for freshly prepared surfaces, implying a van der Waals interaction. A weak, long-range force was observed after exposure of the surfaces for some hours, suggestive of a capillary interaction. The long-range force appeared to contain a nonconservative element which increased on approach to the surface. The results have implications for surface-force determinations by single tip displacement scans, and for imaging with force microscopes.

    Notizen: The usefulness of a silicone oil, Dow Corning 200, as a pressure medium in diamond anvil cells has been investigated. Common indicators of deviatoric stresses on ruby, such as changes in the R-line widths and the R2-R1 peak separation, show that this fluid does not deviate from hydrostaticity up to ∼15 GPa (150 kbar). The behavior of silicone is found to be very similar to the commonly used 4:1 methanol:ethanol mixture, while being much easier to use because of its higher viscosity. This ease of use and excellent performance makes silicone fluid a superior pressure medium. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
