Notes:
Summary Supersaturated solutions of aescin produced by grinding crystalline aescin were found to show increased surface activity and enhanced penetration into insoluble monolayers such as cholesterol and monoolein. The effect is directly related to the degree of supersaturation of the injecting solution which represents a driving force for being adsorbed or entering the monolayer at a pressure above that the reference film. The penetration effect is related to the work of formation of a critical nucleus at an interface. Under conditions of high supersaturation and low surface pressure, the work of critical nucleus formation will be a minimum for a layer thickness corresponding to a monolayer. This phenomenon explains the fact that finely ground aescin is biologically active as a consequence of its increased membrane penetrability while the original crystalline material is not.
