    Beschreibung: A detailed study of the intermittency in the outer region of a flat-plate turbulent boundary layer has been carried out using digital sampling and processing techniques. Conditional averages are used to generate mean and fluctuating components for the turbulent and non-turbulent zones of fluid. More particularly, point averages of these variables, taken with reference to the instantaneous position of the turbulent/non-turbulent interface, have been made to show the distribution of various quantities through the turbulent front. The results indicate that significant differences exist at leading and trailing edges of the turbulent bursts and a more complete picture of the motion of an average large eddy is deduced. © 1974, Cambridge University Press.     Beschreibung: The two-dimensional steady flow of a non-Newtonian fluid (a dilute polymer solution) is examined. The flow domain is composed of a parallel-walled inflow region, a contraction region in which the walls are rectangular hyperbolae, and a parallel-walled outflow region. The problem is formulated in terms of the vorticity, stream function and appropriate rheological equation of state, i.e. an Oldroyd-type constitutive equation (with no shear-thinning) for the total shear and normal-stress components. Computational results from the numerical solution of the equations are presented. In particular, the molecular extension and pressure distribution along the centre-line are presented as well as contour plots of the different flow variables. The alignment of the molecules with the principal axes of strain rate is shown by a qualitative comparison of the streamwise normal-stress contours with contours of the eigenvalues of the strain-rate matrix. © 1978, Cambridge University Press.     Beschreibung: The modelling of anisotropies in the dissipation rate of turbulence is considered based on an analysis of the exact transport equation for the dissipation rate tensor. An algebraic model is systematically derived using integrity bases methods and tensor symmetry properties. The new model differs notably from all previously proposed models in that it depends nonlinearly on the mean velocity gradients. This gives rise to a transport equation for the scalar dissipation rate that is of the same general form as the commonly used model with one major exception: the coefficient of the production term is dependent on the invariants of both the rotational and irrotational strain rates The relationship between the new model and other recently proposed models is examined in detail. Some basic tests and applications of the model are also provided along with a discussion of the implications for turbulence modelling.

    Beschreibung: The modelling of the pressure-strain correlation of turbulence is examined from a basic theoretical standpoint with a view toward developing improved second-order closure models. Invariance considerations along with elementary dynamical systems theory are used in the analysis of the standard hierarchy of closure models. In these commonly used models, the pressure-strain correlation is assumed to be a linear function of the mean velocity gradients with coefficients that depend algebraically on the anisotropy tensor. It is proven that for plane homogeneous turbulent flows the equilibrium structure of this hierarchy of models is encapsulated by a relatively simple model which is only quadratically nonlinear in the anisotropy tensor. This new quadratic model - the SSG model - appears to yield improved results over the Launder, Reece & Rodi model (as well as more recent models that have a considerably more complex nonlinear structure) in five independent homogeneous turbulent flows. However, some deficiencies still remain for the description of rotating turbulent shear flows that are intrinsic to this general hierarchy of models and, hence, cannot be overcome by the mere introduction of more complex nonlinearities. It is thus argued that the recent trend of adding substantially more complex nonlinear terms containing the anisotropy tensor may be of questionable value in the modelling of the pressure-strain correlation.     Beschreibung: Experiments with a weakly damped monopile, either fixed or free to oscillate, exposed to irregular waves in deep water, obtain the wave-exciting moment and motion response. The nonlinearity and peak wavenumber cover the ranges: ϵP ~ 0:10-0:14 and kPr ~ 0:09-0:14 where ϵP = 0:5HSkP is an estimate of the spectral wave slope, HS the significant wave height, kP the peak wavenumber and r the cylinder radius. The response and its statistics, expressed in terms of the exceedance probability, are discussed as a function of the resonance frequency, !0 in the range !0 ~ 3-5 times the spectral peak frequency, ωo. For small wave slope, long waves and ω0/ωP = 3, the nonlinear response deviates only very little from its linear counterpart. However, the nonlinearity becomes important for increasing wave slope, wavenumber and resonance frequency ratio. The extreme response events are found in a region where the Keulegan-Carpenter number exceeds KC 〉 5, indicating the importance of possible flow separation effects. A similar region is also covered by a Froude number exceeding Fr 〉 0:4, pointing to surface gravity wave effects at the scale of the cylinder diameter. Regarding contributions to the higher harmonic forces, different wave load mechanisms are identified, including: (i) wave-exciting inertia forces, a function of the fluid acceleration; (ii) wave slamming due to both non-breaking and breaking wave events; (iii) a secondary load cycle; and (iv) possible drag forces, a function of the fluid velocity. Also, history effects due to the inertia of the moving pile, contribute to the large response events. The ensemble means of the third, fourth and fifth harmonic wave-exciting force components extracted from the irregular wave results are compared to the third harmonic FNV (Faltinsen, Newman and Vinje) theory as well as other available experiments and calculations. The present irregular wave measurements generalize results obtained in deep water regular waves. © 2018 Cambridge University Press.

    Beschreibung: Laboratory experiments with a bottom hinged surface-piercing cylinder, exposed to irregular deep water waves, are used to investigate high-frequency forcing. The focus is on the secondary load cycle, a strongly nonlinear phenomenon regarding the wave load on a vertical cylinder, first identified by Grue et al. (1993 Preprint Series. Mechanics and Applied Mathematics, pp. 1–30. University of Oslo, available at http://urn.nb.no/URN:NBN:no-52740; 1994 Ninth International Workshop on Water Waves and Floating Bodies (ed. M. Ohkusu), pp. 77–81, available at http://iwwwfb.org). For a total of 2166 single wave events, the force above (Formula presented.) (where (Formula presented.) is the governing wave frequency) is used to identify and split the strongly nonlinear forces into two peaks: a high-frequency peak closely correlated in time with the wave crest when the total load is positive and a high-frequency peak defining the secondary load cycle which occurs close in time to the wave zero downcrossing when the total load is negative. The two peaks are studied by regression analysis as a function of either the Keulegan–Carpenter number ((Formula presented.)) or the Froude number ((Formula presented.)). Regarding the secondary load cycle, the best correlation is found with (Formula presented.). The speed of the travelling edge of the undisturbed wave approximates the fluid velocity. A threshold value separating between small and large forces is found for (Formula presented.)–5, indicating effects of flow separation. Alternatively, the threshold occurs for (Formula presented.)–0.4, indicating local wave effects at the scale of the cylinder diameter. The findings suggest that both effects are present and important. © 2018 Cambridge University Press

    Beschreibung: Aerial reconnaissance and photography were used in the Ross Sea sector of Antarctica to determine the breeding locations of Adelie penguins Pygoscelis adeliae, and to count the numbers of nests occupied during the early incubation period. From 1981 to 1987, all islands and sea coasts between 158°E and 175°E were searched, and 11 previously unreported breeding rookeries were discovered. Thirty-eight Adé1ie rookeries are now known from the region, with a total of about 1,082,000 breeding pairs — almost half the world population. Some rookeries were photographed in all, or most, of the seven seasons to study the pattern of natural fluctuations in Adelie populations, and comparisons have been made with earlier counts. Populations at nearly all rookeries have increased in size over the last 10–20 years. Possible reasons for this, and for annual fluctuations in numbers breeding, include seasonal variations in. sea ice and weather conditions, and longer-term climatic change.

The rationale advanced for processing a transducer signal, which indicates the intermittent nature of a turbulent field, is given a probabilistic outlook.
