    Notes: Abstract— The use of linear elastic fracture mechanics to describe the kinetics of fatigue fracture of welded joints with high welding residual stresses (WRS) is experimentally evaluated in this paper. A correction analysis is used to show that the crack propagation rate of cracks in joints, as a function of the applied stress intensity factor, is linear on a log-log scale in the Paris regime when non-uniform fields of WRS are superimposed on the applied cyclic loading. It is shown that crack growth rates in joints with high WRS do not depend on the characteristics of the loading cycle. The parameters of the Paris exponential equation are determined by the initial WRS distribution, by the range of cyclic stresses and by the load ratio. A method for calculating the cyclic crack resistance of joints is proposed which explicitly allows for a non-uniform field of WRS that influences the fatigue crack growth rate.

    Description: In the quest for more efficient thermoelectric material able to convert thermal to electrical energy and vice versa, composites that combine a semiconductor host having a large Seebeck coefficient with metal nanodomains that provide phonon scattering and free charge carriers are particularly appealing. Here, we present our experimental results on the thermal and electrical transport properties of PbS-metal composites produced by a versatile particle blending procedure, and where the metal work function allows injecting electrons to the intrinsic PbS host. We compare the thermoelectric performance of composites with microcrystalline or nanocrystalline structures. The electrical conductivity of the microcrystalline host can be increased several orders of magnitude with the metal inclusion, while relatively high Seebeck coefficient can be simultaneously conserved. On the other hand, in nanostructured materials, the host crystallites are not able to sustain a band bending at its interface with the metal, becoming flooded with electrons. This translates into even higher electrical conductivities than the microcrystalline material, but at the expense of lower Seebeck coefficient values.

    Description: Two ways of synthesis of non-detachable dispersed particles of magnetic materials useful for the boron-containing waste cementation process regulation were developed. Powder XRD showed that the method of carbothermic recovery of nanoscale iron hydroxide allows obtaining a mixture of iron oxides with content of the magnetic phase up to 70%. Method of low-temperature hydrogen reduction of the raw materials allows obtaining various compositions of a-iron and iron oxides with the possibility to change the size of the final particles in a wide range. The possibility of using composites of magnetic iron oxides and metal oxide compositions instead of ferromagnetic rods with VEP of boron-containing liquid radioactive waste in the fluidized field was studied. It was shown that the use of fine and nano particles of the iron oxides in the pre-treatment of the boron-containing LRW increases the strength of the final compounds and accelerates the cement setting compounds from 13 to 5-9 days.

    Description: Magnetoelectric (ME) composites that simultaneously exhibit ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism have recently gained significant attention as evident by the increasing number of publications. These research activities are direct results of the fact that multiferroic magnetoelectrics offer significant technological promise for multiple devices. Appropriate choice of phases with co-firing capability, magnetostriction and piezoelectric coefficient, such as Ni-PZT and NZFO-PZT, has resulted in fabrication of prototype components that promise transition. In this manuscript, we report the properties of Ni-PZT and NZFO-PZT composites in terms of ME voltage coefficients as a function of frequency and magnetic DC bias. In order to overcome the problem of toxicity of lead, we have conducted experiments with Pb-free piezoelectric compositions. Results are presented on the magnetoelectric performance of Ni-NKN, Ni-NBTBT and NZFO-NKN, NZFO-NBTBT systems illustrating their importance as an environmentally friendly alternative.

    Description: Cellulose Nanocrysals (CNC) is a renewable biodegradable biopolymer with outstanding mechanical properties made from highly abundant natural source, and therefore is very attractive as reinforcing additive to replace petroleum-based plastics in biocomposite materials, foams, and gels. Large-scale applications of CNC are currently limited due to its low solubility in non-polar organic solvents used in existing polymerization technologies. The solvation properties of CNC can be improved by chemical modification of its surface. Development of effective surface modifications has been rather slow because extensive chemical modifications destabilize the hydrogen bonding network of cellulose and deteriorate the mechanical properties of CNC.     Description: The paper presents a theoretical model for magnetoelectric (ME) effect in multilayers of piezoelectric and magnetostrictive components. We assume the piezoelectric layer to be compositionally-stepped. Taking into account the toxicity of lead-based ceramic, piezoelectric component is made of a lead-free piezoelectric. Analytical expressions for ME voltage coefficients is obtained by substituting the expression for stress at bending mode into open electric circuit condition. Using the layered structure based on the compositionally-stepped piezoelectric components leads to an enhanced magnetoelectric coupling for specific component thickness ratio due to an increase in flexural deformation as compared with the bilayer based on homogeneous piezoelectric layer. These applications are based on their energetic and non-toxic factors affecting the medium on a cellular level.
