    Notes: Abstract The unsteady dispersion of a solute in a Casson fluid flowing in a conduit (pipe/channel) is studied using the generalized dispersion model of Gill and Sankarasubramanian. With this approach, the entire dispersion process is described appropriately in terms of a simple diffusion process with the effective diffusion coefficient as a function of time, in addition to its dependence on the yield stress of the fluid. The results are accurate up to a first approximation for small times, but verified with Sharp to be exact for large times. The model brings out mainly the effect of yield stress, or equivalently, the plug flow region on the overall dispersion process. It is found that the rate of dispersion is reduced (i.e., the effective diffusivity decreases) due to the yield stress of the fluid, or equivalently, the plug flow region in the conduit. Also, the effective diffusivity increases with time, but eventually attains its steady state value below a critical time [0.48(a2/Dm) for dispersion in a pipe and 0.55(a2/Dm) for dispersion in a channel—the critical transient time for a Newtonian fluid—where “a” is the radius of the pipe and Dm is the molecular diffusivity]. At steady state, for dispersion in a pipe with the plug flow radius one tenth of the radius of the pipe, the effective diffusivity is reduced to about 0.78 times of the corresponding value for a Newtonian fluid at equivalent flow rates; for dispersion in a channel, the reduction factor is about 0.73 confirming the earlier result of Sharp. Further, the location of the center of mass of a passive species over a cross section is found to remain unperturbed during the course of dispersion and for different values of the plug flow parameter (i.e., the yield stress of the fluid). The study can be used as a starting first approximate solution for studying the dispersion in the cardiovascular system or blood oxygenators. © 2000 Biomedical Engineering Society.     Notes: High order finite elements often exhibit an oscillatory behaviour near stress singularities which appears similar to the Gibbs phenomenon in the theory of Fourier series. It is known that under certain conditions the average of successive partial sums (the first Cesaro sum) of a Fourier series exhibiting the Gibbs phenomenon will converge monotonically to the function being approximated. An analogous device introduced for high order finite element approximations near a stress singularity successfully smooths the oscillations of the computed stress.

    Notes: The strain energy release rate (G) converges rapidly in finite element approximations in which the finite element mesh is fixed and the order of polynomial displacement interpolations (p) is increased. Numerical experiments indicate that the error inG is very closely estimated, even for small pand very coarse finite element meshes, by an expression of the form k (NDF)-1 in which k is a mesh dependent constant and NDF is the number of degrees-of-freedom. The method provides for very efficient and accurate computation of G without the use of special techniques.

    Notes: A finite difference solution for the transient nonlinear heat conduction equation in a finite slab with a radiation boundary condition is proposed. An implicit finite difference approximation is used which enables accurate estimation of the surface temperature as well as prevention of oscillation of computed values at the surfaces. A two-time level implicit method is used, while Taylor's forward projection method is employed for taking account of the nonlinearities. An iterative method is described which predicts unknown surface conditions. An example is illustrated which is typical of those that arise in practical applications. The results demonstrate that the method is remarkable in its stability to predict surface conditions without debilitation.

    Notes: A numerical solution of the nonlinear inverse heat conduction problem is obtained using an in-line method in conjuction with the measured thermocouple temperature history. The deforming finite elements technique is used to treat initial time delay in temperature response due to thermocouple location. In the absence of elements deformation, the method reduces to the conventional Galerkin formulation. A three-time level implicit scheme, which is unconditionally stable and convergent, is employed for the numerical solution. The temperature-dependent thermophysical properties in the resulting matrices are evaluated at the intermediate level. The complication of solving a set of nonlinear algebraic equations at each step is avoided. Illustration of the technique is made on the one-dimensional problem with a thermal radiation boundary condition. The results demonstrate that the method is remarkable in its stability to predict surface condition without debilitation.

    Description: Boundary behavior of important functions has been an object of intensive research since the time of Riemann. Kurokawa, Kurokawa-Koyama, and Chapman studied the boundary behavior of generalized Eisenstein series which falls into this category. The underlying principle is the use of the Lipschitz summation formula. Our purpose is to show that it is a form of the functional equation for the Lipschitz–Lerch transcendent (and in the long run, it is equivalent to that for the Riemann zeta-function) and that this being indeed a boundary function of the Hurwitz–Lerch zeta-function, one can extract essential information. We also elucidate the relation between Ramanujan’s formula and automorphy of Eisenstein series.

    Description: Cocurrent and countercurrent imbibitions are the crucial mechanism in many multiphase flow processes. In cocurrent imbibition wetting phase displaces nonwetting phase such that the nonwetting phase moves in the same direction to the wetting phase, whereas in countercurrent imbibitions wetting and non-wetting phase flow in opposite directions. However for cocurrent imbibitions, mathematical models need total flux condition as both phases flow in the same direction. Thus cocurrent imbibitions have been considered neglecting pressure gradient of nonwetting phase and only pressure gradient of displacing phase is considered which gives additional velocity to the displacing phase. An approximate analytical solution is derived by the method of small parameter; an approximate expression for the wetting phase saturation has been obtained. From analytical expression graphical presentation of saturation of wetting phase shows that cocurrent imbibition is faster than countercurrent imbibition. Also, the small parameter is chosen from initial wetting phase saturation and wetting phase saturation at imbibition phase, thus giving comparative behavior of imbibition at initial and later stage. It is shown that cocurrent imbibition proceeds faster with more amount of wetting phase present in porous matrix.
