    Notes: Abstract A new type absolute-humidity sensor with very quick response, very small power consumption and high sensitivity, which is based on the detection of the thermal conductivity change in humid air at heated temperature above 400°C, has been developed and demonstrated. Since this new type absolute-humidity sensor is able to be easily heated up above 400°C within 30–40 msec because of a micro-air-bridge heater structure, the surface of its sensing area is refreshed by burning out adsorbed dusts, oil, etc. Thermal conductivity λmix of mixed gas expressed by Sutherland-Wassiljewa equation is applied to the humid air to study this absolute humidity sensor. Only a single micro-air-bridge heater operation driven by double pulse-currents for this humidity sensor is also proposed.

    Notes: Recently, Ti-based metallic glasses aim at biomaterials with their high specific strengthand superior corrosion resistance. Their high workability also shows a good performance for massproduction under the energy saving environment. In this study, we started investigation of the designof Ti-based metallic glasses with the restricted alloying elements for biocompatibility andcharacteristic evaluation of the optimized Ti-based metallic glasses with higher glass forming abilityfor dental implants. These Ti-based metallic glasses do not contain Al, V and Ni elements which arewell known to be neurotoxicity and cytotoxicity for human body. Current medical reports ofimpracticability by these elements have been a hot issue in biomaterials science. Newly designedTi-based metallic glasses exhibit good performances. Especially, the optimized Ti-based metallicglass has high corrosion resistance with better passivity in a wide passivation range in simulated bodyfluids at 310K. In addition, biocompatibility of Ti-based metallic glass was also evaluated by cellculture in vitro. Excellent biocompatibility of Ti-based metallic glass show high potentials to beapplied as biomaterials that necrosis of osteoblast (SaOS2) was not detected in this study

    Notes: Abstract We clinically evaluated the current indications for perioperative intraaortic balloon pumping (IABP) in high-risk patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Over the past 22 years, 196 CABG patients received perioperative IABP at our institution. We divided the 22 years into periods I–IV (earliest to latest) and investigated the annual changes in the indications for and mortality from IABP. In periods I and II, IABP was mainly employed for postoperative low-output syndrome (LOS) or perioperative myocardial infarction (PMI). The hospital mortality rate was 13.2%–18.5%. In period III, the mortality rate was markedly reduced by the use of preoperative scheduled IABP. In period IV, however, scheduled IABP was used less often for high-risk CABG, and IABP was mainly employed in patients having emergency CABG for acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The hospital mortality rate was reduced to 3.7%. In the last 2 years, 19 (65.5%) of 29 patients who received preoperative IABP had emergency CABG for ACS, while 27 high-risk CABG patients with poor left ventricular (LV) function or left main trunk (LMT) disease were treated successfully without scheduled IABP. There were no significant differences between the IABP and non-IABP patients in age, sex, number of bypasses, and aortic cross-clamp time. Because of improvements in anesthesia, operative techniques, perioperative management, and cardioplegic solutions, preoperative support with IABP is less often needed for high-risk CABG, except in patients undergoing emergency surgery for ACS.

    Notes: Abstract Long-term follow-up was performed in patients with intra-Hisian atrioventricular (AV) block who were implanted with permanent pacemakers. Subjects were 14 consecutive patients (3 men and 11 women, 65.4±9.7 [SD] years old), who exhibited intra-Hisian block at the time of pacemaker generators were replaced due to battery depletion. Electrophysiological examinations were performed at both the initial implantation and pacemaker replacement. The mean duration from the initial implantation to the replacement was 9.4±4.3 years. All patients had severe symptoms such as syncope, dizziness, or dyspnea, and these symptoms were relieved by pacemaker implantation. Seven patients had complete AV block, and the other seven had advanced or paroxysmal AV block at the time of implantation. Seven patients, who had advanced AV block at the time of implantation, developed complete AV block. Five of the seven patients who had complete AV block at the time of implantation remained in complete AV block, one patient had advanced AV block, and one patient of complete AV block increased significantly from 50% to 93% during the two electrophysiological examinations (P〈0.05). A mean heart rate of 40.3±7.5 beats/min was observed during complete AV block. At the time of implantation, two patients were misdiagnosed as having AH block, and the other two patients were misdiagnosed as having HV block. In conclusion, intra-Hisian AV block gradually developed from advanced or paroxysmal AV block into complete AV block. Because the diagnosis of intra-Hisian block is sometimes difficult, we should always consider the possibility of intra-Hisian block in patients with severely symptomatic AV block.

    Notes: To study the effect of fluoride on the physicochemical properties of carbonate-containing apatites, two series of fluoridated CO3 apatites with various fluoride contents were synthesized at 80°C and pH 7.4. The a-axis dimensions of these apatites decreased with the increase of both fluoride and carbonate contents. The crystallinity of the apatites showed similar patterns of variation with the degree of fluoridation irrespective of carbonate content. These patterns appear analogous to the complex pattern of the fluoridated hydroxyapatites previously reported. In contrast to this unexpected crystallinity phenomena, the apparent solubility of fluoridated CO3 apatites in acetate buffer solutions at pH 4.0 and 6.0 and 37°C decreased monotonically with increasing degree of fluoridation and approached that of fluoridated hydroxyapatites at high fluoride content. Dissolution rate of fluoridated CO3 apatite pellets at pH 4.0 also showed a simple decrease with increasing degree of fluoridation and was extremely sensitive to acid at low fluoride content.

    Notes: Iron-containing fluoridated hydroxyapatites with various fluoride contents were synthesized at 80°C and pH 7.4 using FeCl2 · nH2O as a source of iron. The Fe2+ uptake of fluoridated apatites was independent of fluoride concentration in the solution. a-Axis dimensions of Fe-containing apatites decreased with the degree of fluoridation in addition to the decrease related to the substitution of Fe2+ ions. All Fe-containing fluoridated apatites were less well crystallized than Fe-free fluoridated apatites previously reported, although with increasing degree of fluoridation, the crystallinity behavior of the former apatites appeared analogous to that of the latter apatites. In contrast to this inhibited crystallinity behavior, the apparent solubility of Fe-containing fluoridated apatites decreased more than that of Fe-free fluoridated apatites at low fluoride content.

    Notes: A Ni-45 wt % Ti (Ni-50 at % Ti) alloy was cast into molds of magnesia and silica investments by use of a dental argon-arc pressure casting machine with a copper crucible. The castings exhibited shape memory properties. The shape recovery process was sharper in the specimens cast in magnesia investment molds than in those cast in silica (phosphate-bonded) investment molds. The latter casting had a hard region of the periphery, suggesting that shape recovery process may be affected by reaction of molten metal with silica. Furthermore, the alloy possessed the adequate mechanical properties for consideration as crown-and-bridge prostheses.

    Notes: Polyvinyl/polypeptide graft copolymers having microdomain structure on their surfaces were newly synthesized for the development of a specific cell separator, and the adhesion behavior of rat lymphnode lymphocytes with these materials was examined by column method. Morphologic change of lymphocytes adherent to the graft copolymers was found to be less than that of cells adherent to corresponding homopolymers, i.e., polystyrene and poly(γ-benzyl L-glutamate). Separation of lymphocyte subpopulations (B cell and T cell) was examined in the absence of serum proteins. The adhesion selectivity for B cell was found to depend on the microdomain structure, since the highest value, 2,2, was observed for the graft copolymer with the polypeptide content of 50 wt%. Synthetic polypeptide derivatives may be promising materials which substitute for a conventional system with nylon fiber and fetal calf serum.
