    Notes: Abstract The transposable elementmariner has been found in many species ofDrosophilidae, several groups of Arthropods, and more recently in Platyhelminthes as well as in a phytopathogenic fungus. In the familyDrosophilidae, the distribution ofmariner among species shows many gaps, and its geographical distribution among endemic species is restricted to Asia and Africa. Amongmariner elements in species within and outside theDrosophilidae, the similarities in nucleotide sequence and the amino acid sequence of the putative transposase reveal many phylogenetic inconsistencies compared with the conventional phylogeny of the host species. This paper discusses the contrasting hypotheses of horizontal transfer versus ancestral origin proposed to explain these results.

    Notes: Abstract Studies of short or medium range geographic variations play an increasing role in ecological genetics, and sensitive techniques are required to detect them. In this respect, two sampling techniques were compared inD. melanogaster. The biological data were provided by the analysis of four natural populations from the same geographic area, Spain (one) and Southern France (three), for four morphometrical traits: abdomen and thoracic pigmentation, and wing and thorax lengths. Traits were measured on wild living females and on their progeny reared in the laboratory at 25°C. For progeny analyses, two techniques were compared: the usual isofemale line technique, sib families issued from a single female, and a new isogroup technique, the progeny produced by a group of 20 wild-collected parents. Large phenotypic variations were observed in wild living flies, corresponding to the unstability of natural environmental conditions during their development. Among laboratory grown flies, variations were much smaller. Between isogroups, differences were small, due to sampling error and some common environment effects. Variations between lines were much greater, thus demonstrating a strong genetic component. When different populations have to be compared, the isogroup technique should be preferred since, for the same amount of work, the lesser variability between groups provides a more precise characterization of the population means.

    Notes: Abstract The population biology and molecular evolution of the transposable element mariner has been studied in the eight species of the melanogaster subgroup of the Drosophila subgenus Sophophora. The element occurs in D. simulans, D. mauritiana, D. sechellia, D. teissieri, and D. yakuba, but is not found in D. melanogaster, D. erecta, or D. orena. Sequence comparisons suggest that the mariner element was present in the ancestor of the species subgroup and was lost in some of the lineages. Most species contain both active and inactive mariner elements. A deletion of most of the 3′ end characterizes many elements in D. teissieri, but in other species the inactive elements differ from active ones only by simple nucleotide substitutions or small additions/deletions. Active mariner elements from all species are quite similar in nucleotide sequence, although there are some-species-specific differences. Many, but not all, of the inactive elements are also quite closely related. The genome of D. mauritiana contains 20–30 copies of mariner, that of D. simulans 0–10, and that of D. sechellia only two copies (at fixed positions in the genome). The mariner situation in D. sechellia may reflect a reduced effective population size owing to the restricted geographical range of this species and its ecological specialization to the fruit of Morinda citrifolia.

    Notes: Résumé ChezDrosophila melanogaster, les souches provenant d'Afrique tropicale sont plus légères et ont moins de tubes ovariens que les souches françaises. Des mouches provenant de latitudes intermédiaires présentent des caractéristiques génétiques intermédiaires pour les deux caractères. Des clines latitudinaux existent donc entre l'Europe et la région éthiopienne. Un phénomène semblable est retrouvé sur le continent américain. La régularité de ces variations prouve qu'elles correspondent très probablement à une adaptation climatique.

    Notes: Summary Ethanol given to otherwise starvedDrosophila adults can increase their survival from 2.5 to 8 days. Similar results were obtained when only alcohol vapor was accessible to the flies, demonstrating the possibility of significant feeding through their respiration.     Notes: Summary Big differences in the Drosophilid adults collected by traps placed within a short distance were observed during a study in tropical Africa. These can be explained mainly by divergent behavior towards man-made constructions. In most cases, adults strictly avoided entering buildings. On the other hand, some species, mainlyD. melanogaster, appeared to concentrate within man-made constructions. This preference can be considered as a preadaptation which allowed exploitation of new, poorly competed food sources and also favored transportations with fruit shipments all over the world.
