    Notes: Abstract Systems with a gauge degeneracy are characterized either by supplementary conditions, or by a set of generators of gauge transformations, or by a set of constraints deriving from Dirac's canonical constraint method. These constraints can be expressed either as conditions on the field algebra ℱ, or on the states on ℱ. In aC*-algebra framework, we show that the state conditions give rise to a factor algebra of a subalgebra of the field algebra ℱ. This factor algebra, ℛ, is free of state conditions. In this formulation we show also that the algebraic conditions can be treated in the same way as the state conditions. The connection between states on ℱ and states on ℛ is investigated further within this framework, as is also the set of transformations which are compatible with the set of constraints. It is also shown that not every set of constraints can give rise to a nontrivial system. Finally as an example, the abstract theory is applied to the electromagnetic field, and this treatment can be generalized to all systems of bosons with linear constraints. The question of dynamics is not discussed.

    Notes: Abstract We show how to construct irreducible projective representations of the infinite dimensional Lie group Map (S 1, $$\mathbb{T}$$ ), by embedding it into the group of Bogoliubov automorphisms of the CAR. Using techniques of G. Segal for extending certain representations of Map (S 1, SU(2)) we show that our representations extend to give representations of a certain infinite dimensional superalgebra. We relate our work to the well known boson-fermion correspondence which exists in 1+1 dimensions.

    Notes: The line broadening and shifting of the vibrational Q branch in pure HD has been measured for transitions J=0 to 3 at room temperature over the density range 0.8 to 10.6 amagat. The shifting and broadening coefficients have been determined with an uncertainty of ±0.2×10−3 cm−1 /amagat, which now provides a discriminating test for various semiclassical and quantal theoretical calculations. The line broadening coefficients are compared with linewidth data from other spectroscopic branches and with measurements of the rates of state-to-state rotational energy transfer. Use of an exponential gap law for the rates of rotational energy transfer allows estimates to be made of the contributions to the linewidths from rotationally inelastic, elastic vibrational dephasing, and elastic reorientation processes. This analysis suggests that rotational energy transfer occurs approximately 30% faster in v=1 than in v=0.

    Notes: Continuous-wave stimulated Raman spectroscopy has been used to obtain high resolution vibrational Q-branch spectra at room temperature for pure D2 and D2:He, D2:H2, D2:Ar, and D2:CH4 mixtures. Measurements have been made for J=0–5 in the density region of 0.5–20.0 amagat, from which line broadening coefficients have been determined. These coefficients have been analyzed using a modified exponential energy gap rate law to identify the contributions of rotationally inelastic collisions and vibrational dephasing collisions to the linewidth. This analysis has assumed that vibrational dephasing is independent of rotational state, in accord with available theoretical studies. Results are compared with experimental and theoretical work on H2, HD, and D2, thereby characterizing the contributions of rotationally inelastic and vibrational dephasing collisions to the line broadening coefficients as a function of both rotational level and collision partner.

    Notes: Unavoidable beam crossings within a spherical-mirror, multipass stimulated Raman gain cell give rise simultaneously to forward- and backward-scattering Raman signals. In the Doppler-broadened/Dicke-narrowed regime of density, the lineshape is a function of the momentum transfer in the scattering process and thus the observed spectra will have more complex lineshapes than those seen with simple forward or backward scattering geometries. The analyses necessary to quantitatively account for such forward–backward spectra are summarized. These spectra enable unique experimental tests of the lineshape functions used for the description of the Raman Q-branch spectrum under conditions where Doppler contributions and Dicke narrowing are significant. Results for the D2@B:D2 and D2@B:He systems support the well-known Galatry, or soft collision, lineshape function. However, in the case of D2@B:Ar, our results suggest the need to employ the more general, complex soft collision function. In addition, these studies have provided data on linear-with-density line broadening coefficients (previously published) and line shifting coefficients (reported here) for these molecular systems.

    Notes: The J and temperature dependence of the self-broadening coefficients for the Raman Q-branch lines of pure CO have been experimentally determined for Q(J) transitions with J=0–38 and for temperatures in the range 400–1500 K. It is shown that a fitting law, based on a modified exponential energy-gap model for the rates of state-to-state rotationally inelastic collisions, can account for the observed J dependence. The two parameters that determine the J dependence are found to be essentially independent of temperature. A temperature scaling function, recently proposed for N2, is added to the basic rate law, and accurate predictions of both the J and the T dependence of these coefficients and those previously reported at 298 K are obtained. This rate law model, used in conjunction with a relaxation matrix description of the Q-branch spectrum, is shown to give good agreement with the observed, partially collapsed spectrum at 2.8 atm and 295 K.
