Notizen: Abstract Spatial pattern formation is one of the key issues in developmental biology. Some patterns arising in early development have a very small spatial scale and a natural explanation is that they arise by direct cell—cell signalling in epithelia. This necessitates the use of a spatially discrete model, in contrast to the continuum-based approach of the widely studied Turing and mechanochemical models. In this work, we consider the pattern-forming potential of a model for juxtacrine communication, in which signalling molecules anchored in the cell membrane bind to and activate receptors on the surface of immediately neighbouring cells. The key assumption is that ligand and receptor production are both up-regulated by binding. By linear analysis, we show that conditions for pattern formation are dependent on the feedback functions of the model. We investigate the form of the pattern: specifically, we look at how the range of unstable wavenumbers varies with the parameter regime and find an estimate for the wavenumber associated with the fastest growing mode. A previous juxtacrine model for Delta-Notch signalling studied by Collier et al. (1996, J. Theor. Biol. 183, 429–446) only gives rise to patterning with a length scale of one or two cells, consistent with the fine-grained patterns seen in a number of developmental processes. However, there is evidence of longer range patterns in early development of the fruit fly Drosophila. The analysis we carry out predicts that patterns longer than one or two cell lengths are possible with our positive feedback mechanism, and numerical simulations confirm this. Our work shows that juxtacrine signalling provides a novel and robust mechanism for the generation of spatial patterns.

Notizen: Abstract An economic production game is treated, in which players pool resources to produce finished goods which can be sold at a given market price. The production process is linear, so that the characteristic function can be obtained by solving linear programs. Duality theory of linear programming is used to obtain equilibrium price vectors and to prove the non-emptiness of the core. Under replication, it is shown that, in the non-degenerate case, the core converges finitely to the set of competitive equilibria; a counter-example shows that this is not true in the degenerate case (i.e., only convergence in the limit can be guaranteed).

Notizen: Abstract Recent research in cumulative damage models for strengths of systems has yielded various statistical distributions that incorporate a system size variable and follow a generalized Birnbaum-Saunders form. These models can be unified as a three-parameter Birnbaum-Saunders-type family of distributions, where the third parameter arises from the size variable through the cumulative damage approach. In this paper, the generalized three-parameter Birnbaum-Saunders distribution is characterized, and examples of cumulative damage models for system strength that fit this form are given. Also, estimation and asymptotic theory are developed for the generalized distribution, and illustrations are presented for experimental strength data for carbon composite materials.

Notizen: Abstract In this survey problems from the consideration of infinite dimensional commodity spaces in the Arrow-Debreu-McKenzie model are discussed. It has become clear in the last couple of decades that in order to address real policy questions, economic models that are both stochastic and dynamic have to be employed. These models lead naturally to infinite dimensional commodity spaces.

Notizen: Abstract Our attention is focused here on a class of materials each of whose response to a particular motion is invariant under certain changes in time scale. We establish conditions on the given motion under which this invariance can in principle be detected by means of the following procedure: subject identical specimens to motions which differ from the given one only by the appropriate changes in time scale and measure the responses. In general, the class of motions for which this procedure is feasible includes only certain accelerationless or circulation-preserving motions. However, for the special case of simples, incompressible materials in homogeneous bodies this restriction is not unduly severe.

Notizen: Summary A first-order boundary-layer analysis, including variable properties effects, is given for laminar natural convection on a horizontal surface possessing a circular cut-out. The latter provides the leading edge of the boundary layer and it is shown that, initially, boundary layer development occurs as if the leading edge were straight. Far from the cut-out, boundary layer development is shown to become completely axially symmetric.
