Notes: Abstract We describe a new method we have developed which can be used to make ultrasonic measurements with picosecond time resolution, and give examples of its application to the study of the acoustic and mechanical properties of microstructures.

Notes: Summary For a special class of elastic-plastic materials, it is shown that infinitesimal oscillatory shearing motions can be sustained without the application of body forces. Hardening, softening and perfectly plastic responses are considered.

Notes: Abstract Cartesian product (CP) files have been shown to be very effective for partial match retrieval. Further the Disk Modulo (DM) allocation method has been shown to be a simple and effective method for allocating CP files onto multiple independently accessible disks to further facilitate partial match retrieval. In this paper, a useful criterion for the DM method to be the best allocation method for a given CP file is presented. The presented criterion is much more general than that suggested previously which makes the DM allocation method much more applicable for real applications.

Notes: Abstract The relationship between chaos and overturning in the rocking response of a rigid object under periodic excitation is examined from both deterministic and stochastic points of view. A stochastie extension of the deterministic Melnikov function (employed to provide a lower bound for the possible chaotic domain in parameter space) is derived by taking into account the presence of random noise. The associated Fokker-Planck equation is derived to obtain the joint probability density functions in state space. It is shown that global behavior of the rocking motion can be effectively studied via the evolution of the joint probability density function. A mean Poincaré mapping technique is developed to average out noise effects on the chaotic response to reconstruct the embedded strange attractor on the Poincaré section. The close relationship between chaos and overturning is demonstrated by examining the structure of the invariant manifolds. It is found that the presence of noise enlarges the boundary of possible chaotic domains in parameter space and bridges the domains of attraction of coexisting responses. Numerical results consistent with the Foguel alternative theorem, which discerns asymptotic stabilities of responses, indicate that the overturning attracting domain is of the greatest strength. The presence of an embedded strange attractor (reconstructed using the mean Poincaré mapping technique) indicates the existence of transient chaotic rocking response.

Description: A proportional hazards model with varying coefficients allows one to examine the extent to which covariates interact nonlinearly with an exposure variable. A global partial likelihood method, in contrast with the local partial likelihood method of Fan et al. (2006), is proposed for estimation of varying coefficient functions. The proposed estimators are proved to be consistent and asymptotically normal. Semiparametric efficiency of the estimators is demonstrated in terms of their linear functionals. Evidence in support of the superiority of the method is presented in numerical studies and real examples.

Description: Using the stress-energy tensor, we establish some monotonicity formulae for vector bundle-valued p -forms satisfying the conservation law, provided that the base Riemannian (resp. Kähler) manifolds possess some real (resp. complex) p -exhaustion functions. Vanishing theorems follow immediately from the monotonicity formulae under suitable growth conditions on the energy of the p -forms. As an application, we establish a monotonicity formula for the Ricci form of a Kähler manifold of constant scalar curvature, and then get a growth condition to derive the Ricci flatness of the Kähler manifold. In particular, when the curvature does not change sign, the Kähler manifold is isometrically biholomorphic to C m . Another application is to deduce the monotonicity formulae for volumes of minimal submanifolds in some outer spaces with suitable exhaustion functions. In this way, we recapture the classical volume monotonicity formulae of minimal submanifolds in Euclidean spaces. We also apply the vanishing theorems to Bernstein-type problem of submanifolds in Euclidean spaces with parallel mean curvature. In particular, we may obtain Bernstein-type results for minimal submanifolds, especially for minimal real Kähler submanifolds under weaker conditions.

Description: Two families of third-order iterative methods for finding multiple roots of nonlinear equations are developed in this paper. Mild conditions are given to assure the cubic convergence of two iteration schemes (I) and (II). The presented families include many third-order methods for finding multiple roots, such as the known Dong's methods and Neta's method. Some new concrete iterative methods are provided. Each member of the two families requires two evaluations of the function and one of its first derivative per iteration. All these methods require the knowledge of the multiplicity. The obtained methods are also compared in their performance with various other iteration methods via numerical examples, and it is observed that these have better performance than the modified Newton method, and demonstrate at least equal performance to iterative methods of the same order.
