Description: The abundances of Fe-58 and Co-59 are far too large to be compatible with an s-process acting on Fe-56 as the only essential seed material unless a sharp lower cut-off is introduced ad hoc into the flux distribution. This cut-off leads to a maximum in the abundance times cross-section curve around A = 60 for which there is evidence but which can naturally be explained as an image of the iron peak shifted by an almost uniform neutron flux. Further evidence supports the conclusion of Peters et al. that the iron peak must have been considerably smaller for the seed of the s-process than for the solar system matter.

Description: By means of a gamma ray sum spectrometer currently under development, many neutron capture cross sections will be determined with high accuracy, thereby facilitating the inferrence of the abundance ratios of neighboring elements with the same accuracy. Attention is presently given to this and other prospects emerging in the study of nuclide abundances and the data base for theories of element synthesis. Poorly understood structures in the abundance curve are discussed in view of recent models on nuclear structure and stability.

Description: Abundance regularities for heavy nuclei (A greater than 58) are investigated and formulated as abundance rules. Abundance values of carbonaceous chondrites of type 1 and 2 as well as most probable values for primordial abundances are listed. The abundance rules definitely require minor correctons of the empirical values. A measurement of the (u, gamma) cross-section of Pd-104 would make possible to decide whether type-1 or type-2 carbonaceous chondrites have a more primitive elemental composition.
