    Description: A preliminary measurement of the total yields of ejected ions and electrons from H2O ices has been carried out using the He I 584 A resonance line as the incident photon beam. The H2O ices were prepared at 77 K in an ultrahigh vacuum system. The total yield of the ejected ion species and electrons was determined to be 8.8x10(exp -5) and 4.2x10(exp -4), respectively.

    Description: The calculated velocity distributions of atomic hydrogen and hydroxyl radicals produced through solar photodissociation of gaseous water molecules are presented. Under collisionless conditions, the calculation was carried out using the most recent available data for the production of H and OH through photodissociation of H2O from its dissociation onset throughout the EUV region. Because the lack of data in certain spectral regions, only upper and lower bounds to the velocity distributions can be obtained. The results show that the H atoms and OH radicals produced exhibit multiple velocity groups. Since most of the current cometary modeling uses a single velocity of 20 km/s associated with the photodissociation of H2O, the present results may be useful in interpreting the many peaks observed in the velocity distributions of cometary atomic hydrogen.

    Description: Measurements were made of: (1) the fluorescence cross sections of OH(A 2Sigma+) fragments; (2) the absolute cross sections producing H atoms in the n = 2, 3, and 4 states; (3) the cross section for producing excited O atoms which has an upper limit of 5 x 10 to the -21 sq cm; and (4) the fluorescence cross section for producing H2(a 3Sigma g +) fragments. It is shown that, in the 16-20 eV region, there are excellent correspondences in the peak positions and spacings among the photoabsorption, photoionization spectra, and fluorescence functions of OH(A) and H(n).

    Description: The cross section for the production of the H2O(+) A 2A1(0,7,0) - X 2B1(0,0,0) fluorescence through photoionization of H2O was measured in the 14.5-20.5 eV region. The maximum quantum yield is 1.4 x 10 to the -3rd at 16.5 eV.

    Description: The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) UV spectra of Jupiter after the collision of Comet SL9 show predominantly molecular features of S2, CS2, NH3, and H2S in the 1800-3200 A region. The HST observations were made under various phases of impact conditions which gave temperatures higher than 1000 K. It is thus clear that temperature-dependent laboratory cross section data are required in order to determine the molecular abundances in Jupiter's atmosphere after the impact of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9. The required high-resolution temperature dependent S2 absorption cross sections have not been directly measured in the laboratory. To provide the required data for modelers our objective is to accurately measure the high-resolution (FWHM = 0.003 A) and medium resolution (FWHM - 0.08 A) temperature dependent S2 in the 2450-3200 A region. Using the experimental setup we have obtained absorbtion spectra of S2 under various temperature conditions.

    Description: Two primary loss mechanisms of interstellar neutral hydrogen in interplanetary space are resonance charge exchange ionization with solar wind protons and photoionization by solar EUV radiation. The later process has often been neglected since the average photoionization rate has been estimated to be as much as 5 to 10 times smaller than the charge exchange rate. These factors are based on ionization rates from early measurements of solar EUV and solar wind fluxes. Using revised solar EUV and solar wind fluxes measured near the ecliptic plane we have reinvestigated the ionization rates of interplanetary hydrogen. The result of our analysis indicates that indeed the photoionization rate during solar minimum can be smaller than charge exchange by a factor of 5; however, during solar maximum conditions when solar EUV fluxes are high, and solar wind fluxes are low, photoionization can be over 60% of the charge exchange rate at Earth orbit. To obtain an accurate estimate of the importance of photoionization relative to charge exchange, we have included photoionization from both the ground and metastable states of hydrogen. We find, however, that the photoionization from the metastable state does not contribute significantly to the overall photoionization rate.

    Description: Using synchrotron radiation as a continuum light source, the photoabsorption and photoionization cross sections of NH3, PH3, H2S, C2H2, and C2H4 have been measured from their respective ionization thresholds to 1060 A. The vibrational constants associated with the nu(2) totally symmetric, out-of-plane bending vibration of the ground electronic state of PH3(+) have been obtained. The cross sections and quantum yields for producing neutral products through photoexcitation of these molecules in the given spectral regions have also been determined. In the present work, autoionization processes were found to be less important than dissociation and predissociation processes in NH3, PH3, and C2H4. Several experimental techniques have been employed in order to examine the various possible systematic errors critically.

    Description: Attention is given to the uncertainties that remain concerning the autoionization states of O2 leading to the a 4Pi(u) and A 2Pi(u) states of O2(+), as well as some of the assignments of the autoionization states and the determinations of effective quantum numbers and quantum defects. The former problems of vibrational assignments are unambiguously established in view of a study of isotopic oxygen molecules. A systematic examination of the known Rydberg series is conducted, and new assignments and interpretations for several autoionization states leading to the various states of O2(+) are suggested.

    Description: The absolute cross section for production of OH(A2Sigma/+/ X2Pi) fluorescence through photodissociative excitation of H2O was obtained using the University of Wisconsin synchrotron radiation source. The absolute fluorescence cross section function shows three broad features, roughly centered at 710, 400, and 240 A; the maximum value fluorescence cross section was found to be 3.4 x 10 to the -20th sq cm at 703 A. The broad features in the 700-A and 400-A regions are considered to be due to the second and the third excited states of H2O, respectively; it is argued that the broad feature at 240 A may have an origin similar to that of the 400-A broad feature. From present and previous data on quantum yields, it is estimated that part of the yield may be attributable to the production of neutral ground state OH(X) and H(1 2S) fragments. Such a process could provide a significant source of high kinetic energy OH and H observed in cometary atmospheres.

    Description: The NH(A-X) emission produced by photodissociation of NH3 is examined using a line emission source in the 600-1340 A region. It is observed that the production of the NH(A 3Pi i) photofragment involves a spin-forbidden transition. Fluorescence spectra of NH3 are derived and analyzed. The relationship between fluorescence cross sections and fluorescence count rates and gas pressure is studied. The fluorescence cross sections of NH(A-X) are calculated as 2.1 x 10 to the -22nd, 3.1 x 10 to the -22nd, 3.0 x 10 to the -21st, 1.5 x 10 to the -20th, and 3.4 x 10 to the -20th sq cm for the primary photon wavelength of 1239, 1184, 1065, 1037, and 976 A, respectively; and the corresponding fluorescence quantum yields are 0.00002, 0.00003, 0.0012, 0.0085, and 0.015.
