    Description: The pyroxene saturation surface in the system diopside-albite-anorthite may be calculated to + or - 10 C from thermochemical data over most of its composition range. The thermochemical data used are the experimentally determined enthalpies of mixing of the ternary liquids and the enthalpy of fusion of diopside. These are combined with a mixing model for the configurational entropy in the melt and the activity of CaMgSi2O6 in the clinopyroxene, which is less than unity due to departures from CaMgSi2O6 stoichiometry. The two-lattice melt model appears to work satisfactorily throughout the pyroxene primary phase field but probably needs modification at more anorthite-rich compositions.

    Description: Sample 10071,33 is a thin section of Apollo 11 ferrobasalt showing an unusual dual texture. The major portion of the sample is very similar to other fine grained Apollo 11 basalts, but the thin section also includes materials with a distinct variolitic texture. The two areas are separated by a sharp boundary and the mineralogy and composition of the two textural types are quite distinct. The mineralogy and chemistry of the variolitic portion show it to be the product of rapid cooling of a liquid, intermediate between the typical Apollo 11 ferrobasalt and the associated Si and K-rich mesostasis. This liquid is the result of fractional crystallization of a magma of composition closely corresponding to the major portion of the 10071 system, followed by crystal-liquid separation. The sample provides strong and direct evidence for igneous differentiation on the lunar surface.

    Description: Three small fragments of Luna 16 basalt (NASA sample designation G38) have been analyzed with an electron microprobe. The mineralogy is generally similar to that found in Apollo 11 and 12 igneous rocks: major amounts of clinopyroxene, plagioclase, ilmenite and olivine; accessory spinel, troilite, Fe metal and residual phases. Unlike some Apollo 12 basalts, there is continuous zoning with no composition gap in the G38 spinels. Plagioclase analyses follow the same nonstoichiometric trends previously found in Apollo 11 and 12. The samples indicate a magmatic history (rapid crystallization from reduced melts) similar to that inferred from studies of Apollo 11 and 12 basalts.

    Description: A simple model has been designed to allow reasonably accurate calculations of viscosity as a function of temperature and composition. The problem of predicting viscosities of anhydrous silicate liquids has been investigated since such viscosity numbers are applicable to many extrusive melts and to nearly dry magmatic liquids in general. The fluidizing action of water dissolved in silicate melts is well recognized and it is now possible to predict the effect of water content on viscosity in a semiquantitative way. Water was not incorporated directly into the model. Viscosities of anhydrous compositions were calculated, and, where necessary, the effect of added water and estimated. The model can be easily modified to incorporate the effect of water whenever sufficient additional data are accumulated.

    Description: Solid/liquid distribution coefficients (weight basis) were experimentally determined for a number of trace elements for olivine, orthopyroxene, plagioclase and ilmenite. Values of distribution coefficients were measured at 1200 C and a f sub O2 of 10 to the -13.0 power for liquids similar in composition to the olivine-opx-plagioclase peritectic in the pseudoternary system (Fe,Mg)2SiO4-CaAl2Si2O8-SiO2. Values were also measured at 1140 C and a f sub O2 of 10 to the -12.8 power for liquids similar in composition to high-Ti mare basalts. Major and trace element partitioning and relevant phase equilibria were used to investigate possible parent-daughter relationships between a number of highland samples and highly evolved KREEP-rich materials. Out of about 80 highlands samples tested, 33 were found to be possible parents to the KREEP-rich materials. The average composition of these samples is very similar to that of the Low-K Fra Mauro basalt (LKFM). A model is proposed to explain the production of LKFM-type material and more evolved members of the KREEP suite.

    Description: A detailed description is given of the petrology and mineralogy of lunar polymict breccia 14321, which was returned from the Fra Mauro formation on the Apollo 14 mission. Electron probe microanalysis and microscopic studies were made of seven petrographic thin sections of the rock. Three broad genetic classes were found in the thin sections: (1) rounded fragments of pre-existing microbreccia with microscopically recognizable crystal and lithic fragments incorporated in a dark matrix; (2) igneous rock fragments of basaltic composition; and (3) a light colored, somewhat friable matrix which cements the other two classes. The components are classified according to chemical, mineralogical textural, and chronological criteria.

    Description: The assembly and metamorphic history of polymict breccia 14321 are reconstructed. The earliest formed fragmental component of 14321 (microbreccia-1) is dominated by KREEP-rich norite, extruded and subsequently brecciated and lithified in an ejecta blanket at approximately 1000 C in the general region of Mare Imbrium after the Serenitatis impact but prior to the Imbrium impact. This early microbreccia component and lesser amounts of mare-type basalt, microgranite, rhyolite glass, anorthosite and olivine microbreccia were assembled at the Apollo 14 site as part of the Fra Mauro ejecta blanket from the Imbrium impact. The resulting microbreccia-3 incorporates all the lithic types above and accretionary lapilli structures (microbreccia-2) in a dark matrix annealed at approximately 700 C. A later impact on the Fra Mauro excavated and mutually abraded microbreccia-3 and a local, 14321-type, basalt which were assembled into polymict breccia 14321. Final placement of 14321 at its sampling location was accomplished during the minor Cone Crater impact event.
