    Description: The stochastically perturbed parametrisation tendency (SPPT) scheme is a well‐established technique in ensemble forecasting to address model uncertainty by introducing perturbations into the tendencies provided by the physics parametrisations. The magnitude of the perturbations scales with the local net parametrisation tendency, resulting in large perturbations where diabatic processes are active. Rapidly ascending air streams, such as warm conveyor belts (WCBs) and organized tropical convection, are often driven by cloud diabatic processes and are therefore prone to such perturbations. This study investigates the effects of SPPT and initial condition perturbations on rapidly ascending air streams by computing trajectories in sensitivity experiments with the European Centre for Medium‐Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ensemble prediction system, which are set up to disentangle the effects of initial conditions and physics perturbations. The results demonstrate that SPPT systematically increases the frequency of rapidly ascending air streams. The effect is observed globally, but is enhanced in regions where the latent heating along the trajectories is larger. Despite the frequency changes, there are only minor modifications to the physical properties of the trajectories due to SPPT. In contrast to SPPT, initial condition perturbations do not affect WCBs and tropical convection systematically. An Eulerian perspective on vertical velocities reveals that SPPT increases the frequency of strong upward motions compared with experiments with unperturbed model physics. Consistent with the altered vertical motions, precipitation rates are also affected by the model physics perturbations. The unperturbed control member shows the same characteristics as the experiments without SPPT regarding rapidly ascending air streams. We make use of this to corroborate the findings from the sensitivity experiments by analyzing the differences between perturbed and unperturbed members in operational ensemble forecasts of ECMWF. Finally, we give an explanation of how symmetric, zero‐mean perturbations can lead to a unidirectional response when applied in a nonlinear system.

    Description: Attention is given to an empirical model for transition to turbulence in oscillatory flows in straight tubes. Designed after a correlation for transition of a boundary layer on a flat plate, the model yields the laminar flow momentum thickness Reynolds number that must be met before transition to turbulence will occur. The transition point is located by comparing this to the actual momentum thickness Reynolds number. A scheme is proposed for estimating the momentum thickness Reynolds number in terms of the position within the cycle, the maximum value of the diameter Reynolds within the cycle, Re(max), and the dimensionless frequency, Valensi number. Results from an experimental study of oscillatory flow in a tube are employed to develop the model. When the flow is determined to be turbulent, it is proposed that a fully-developed, steady flow friction coefficient be applied. When the flow is laminar, the assumption of fully developed flow cannot be made; thus, a method is suggested for estimating the friction factor.

    Description: Short-wavelength ultraviolet spectra of two active-chromosphere giants, HD 160538 and HD 185510, show hot stellar continua and L-alpha absorption features. The hot companion of HD 160538 is a white dwarf whose ultraviolet spectrum is matched best to the energy distribution of a T(eff) = 30,000 K and log g = 8 model atmosphere. The ultraviolet spectrum of HD 185510 shows numerous absorption features and is identified as a B subdwarf. Since the giant star of each of these binary systems has no known abundance anomalies, these systems appear to be consistent with the mass-transfer scenario of barium-star formation.

    Description: Two micrometer spectrum of epsilon Aur was observed at high resolution (lambda/delta lambda approx. 40000) with the KPNO 4m telescope and FTS approximately every 100 days during the recent eclipse. CO delta v=2 lines appeared in the spectrum only after mid-totality. No CO features were present JD 2445478 but weak absorption lines were present on 2445592. The CO strengthened in the spectrum and remained present until at least 2445812. CO was again absent after forth contact when the spectrum was observed on 2445912. The CO appears to originate in a cool (approx. 1000 K), turbulent region. Excitation temperatures, velocities, and column densities is presented.

    Description: The PASTEL Mission Planning System (MPS) has been developed in C++ using an object-oriented (OO) methodology. While the scope and complexity of this system cannot compare to that of an MPS for a complex mission one of the main considerations of the development was to ensure that we could reuse some of the classes in future MPS. We present here PASTEL MPS classes which could be used in the foundations of a class library for MPS.

    Description: A program to obtain IUE spectra and optical photometry and spectra of three RS CVn-type binaries (HR 1099, II Peg, and AR Lac) and the prototype BY Dra system is reported. The systems were monitored for at least one orbital phase, and periodic variations in emission line flux from II Peg and HR 1099, indicative of notational modulation of an active region on these stars were detected. It is found that for II Peg the active region is in phase with photometric minimum as expected, but for HR 1099 ultraviolet emission maximum occurs at the time of photometric maximum.

    Description: Experiments on boundary layer transition with flat, concave and convex walls and various levels of free-stream disturbance and with zero and strong streamwise acceleration have been conducted. Measurements of both fluid mechanics and heat transfer processes were taken. Examples are profiles of mean velocity and temperature; Reynolds normal and shear stresses; turbulent streamwise and cross-stream heat fluxed; turbulent Prandtl number; and streamwise variations of wall skin friction and heat transfer coefficient values. Free-stream turbulence levels were varied over the range from about 0.3 percent to about 8 percent. The effects of curvature on the onset of transition under low disturbance conditions are clear; concave curvature leads to an earlier and more rapid transition and the opposite is true for convex curvature This was previously known but little documentation of the transport processes in the flow was available

    Description: Recent studies of 2-D boundary layers undergoing bypass transition were reviewed. Bypass transition is characterized by the sudden appearance of turbulent spots in boundary layer without first the regular, observable growth of disturbances predicted by linear stability theory. There are no standard criteria or parameters for defining bypass transition, but it is known to be the mode of transition when the flow is disturbed by perturbations of sufficient amplitude.

    Description: A set of IUE observations of V711 Tau = HR 1099 (K1 IV and G2 V) in which high-resolution spectra with the SWP and LWR cameras were obtained during the luminous flare of October 3, 1981 is discussed. Multigaussian fits to the Mg II k and C IV 1548 A lines are consistent with the flare radial velocity being identical to that of the K star. Thus, the flare probably occurred on the K star. There is no evidence for flows as seen during a flare on UX Ari. The strongest emitters of UV radiation during the flare were the L alpha and Mg II lines, which emitted seven times as much energy as all the transition region lines combined. The peak luminosity of the flare in the UV emission lines is 1.5 times 10 to the 31st power ergs/sec, and the total emission in these lines during the flare was about 4 times 10 to the 35th power ergs.

    Description: Preliminary results of a 6 cm continuum survey using the NRAO VLA of binary systems with 10-100 day orbital period containing an 'active' giant component are reported. The results show that strong radio continuum emission at centimeter wavelengths is a common but not universal property of this class of stars. Possible correlations between radio luminosity and other properties, such as X-ray luminosity, rotational period, and type of companion are discussed. Several binary systems which have been detected for the first time as radio sources are reported, and sensitive upper limits are presented for five other systems, including Capella.
