    Description: Some recent developments in coherent optical processing are described in this paper. Specifically, the use of one or more elementary gratings to perform useful processing operations and computer-generated spatial filters to obtain generalized transforms are discussed. Applications incorporating nonlinear optical elements and optical feedback into the processing system are also presented.

    Description: A study has been made on restoration of degraded images utilizing spatial filtering techniques in a coherent optical processor. This study differs from other coherent approaches in that the spatial filters employed contain only composite gratings that are quite simple to produce. A general method of synthesizing the appropriate composite gratings for linearly smeared as well as multiply exposed and out-of-focus images will be presented in some detail with experimental results. The extension of the method of synthesis to other types of degradation is briefly discussed.

    Description: Two important operations that can be performed by coherent optical processing systems are image detection and image restoration. These operations require complex spatial filters, and if both operations are to be performed, cascaded processing stages employing two separate spatial filters are usually needed. Spatial filters are described that will perform in a single step both operations simultaneously, thus eliminating the need for extra processing stages while providing the advantages of higher efficiency and smaller space requirements. The filters are characterized by their simplicity and are easily fabricated using conventional techniques. Experimental results are presented.

    Description: A unique optical feedback system for coherent optical data processing is described. With the introduction of feedback, the well-known transfer function for feedback systems is obtained in two dimensions. Operational details of the optical feedback system are given.     Description: Linear and nonlinear optical processing techniques (Fourier transformation, convolution and correlation, arithmetic operations - addition and subtraction with gratings, generalized orthogonal transformations; theta modulation, half-tone screen process, optical feedback) for mathematical computations are reviewed. The use of gratings and computer holograms in addition, subtraction, differentiation, and application of generalized transformations is discussed. Use of nonlinear optical elements with or without optical coherent feedback in such nonlinear operations as taking logarithms and thresholding is described. Applications in hybrid systems incorporating digital computer and optical processor with real-time interface devices, or optical threshold and logic devices for parallel processing to apply digital techniques to optical information are considered.

    Description: New techniques in nonlinear optical processing are explored, based on the operation of intensity level selection as performed by a Fabry-Perot interferometer containing a phase object. The image being processed is recorded on a medium between the mirrors as a spatially varying phase shift less than pi. The interferometer only transmits light through those portions of the object that corresponds to a single value of the phase and hence to a single intensity level in the input. More complicated operations such as thresholding and analog-to-digital conversion are performed by modulating the light source as the different levels are selected. Photoresist and lithium niobate have been used as phase objects, and experimental data for both are presented. Three kinds of Fabry-Perot interferometers have been used to demonstrate nonlinear processing using coherent and incoherent light. Color images have been produced with black and white inputs and white light illumination.

    Description: Optical implementation of the Fukunaga-Koontz transform (FKT) and the Least-Squares Linear Mapping Technique (LSLMT) is described. The FKT is a linear transformation which performs image feature extraction for a two-class image classification problem. The LSLMT performs a transform from large dimensional feature space to small dimensional decision space for separating multiple image classes by maximizing the interclass differences while minimizing the intraclass variations. The FKT and the LSLMT were optically implemented by utilizing a coded phase optical processor. The transform was used for classifying birds and fish. After the F-K basis functions were calculated, those most useful for classification were incorporated into a computer generated hologram. The output of the optical processor, consisting of the squared magnitude of the F-K coefficients, was detected by a T.V. camera, digitized, and fed into a micro-computer for classification. A simple linear classifier based on only two F-K coefficients was able to separate the images into two classes, indicating that the F-K transform had chosen good features. Two advantages of optically implementing the FKT and LSLMT are parallel and real time processing.

    Description: A brief review of 2D PNS methodology is first presented which describes the specialized features of supersonic shock-capturing and subsonic pressure-split models required for the analysis of aircraft, rocket and scramjet jet mixing problems. These features include techniques for dealing with various types of embedded and interfacing subsonic regions, the inclusion of finite-rate chemistry and the direct-coupling with potential flow solutions. Preliminary 3D extensions of this PNS methodology geared to supersonic and subsonic rectangular free jet mixing problems are also reviewed. New 3D PNS work will be described which includes the development of a hybrid supersonic/subsonic free jet mixing model, and, a supersonic model geared to the analysis of turbulent mixing and combustion processes occurring in scramjet combustor/nozzle flowfields.
