Beschreibung: The first InGaAs/InP charge-coupled device is demonstrated, exhibiting a charge transfer efficiency (CTE) of 0.98 at 13 MHz and 1 GHz. Cooling the device improves the CTE to greater than 0.99 at 13-MHz clock frequency. The 0.76-eV In(0.53)Ga(0.47)As bandgap makes this structure applicable to direct-detection short-wavelength infrared imagers.

Beschreibung: The fabrication and performance of an Al(0.3)Ga(0.7)As/GaAs modulation-doped resistive-gate CCD are reported. The two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) CCD, implemented as a 32-stage four-phase delay line, was tested at both low (1-13 MHz) and high (0.6-1.0 GHz) frequency. It exhibits a room-temperature charge-transfer efficiency (CTE) of better than 0.999 at clock frequencies from 10 MHz up to 1 GHz without a fat-zero signal and is limited by dark current below 10 MHz. The high-frequency test showed no CTE degradation up to 1-GHz operation. The CTE degraded at frequencies lower than approximately 5 MHz due to dark current. The charge-handling capability and minimum clock swing of the resistive-gate 2DEG CCD are calculated.

Beschreibung: We have built and made operational a 6 in. electric arc driven shock tube which alloys us to study the non-equilibrium radiation and kinetics of low pressure (0.1 to 1 torr) gases processed by 6 to 12 km/s shock waves. The diagnostic system allows simultaneous monitoring of shock radiation temporal histories by a bank of up to six radiometers, and spectral histories with two optical multi-channel analyzers. A data set of eight shots was assembled, comprising shocks in N2 and air at pressures between 0.1 and 1 torr and velocities of 6 to 12 km/s. Spectrally resolved data was taken in both the non-equilibrium and equilibrium shock regions on all shots. The present data appear to be the first spectrally resolved shock radiation measurements in N2 performed at 12 km/s. The data base was partially analyzed with salient features identified.

Beschreibung: The classic movie Metropolis (1926), which is nowadays considered a cinema milestone, has shown the possibility to build robots called androids that are science and fiction run together to realize a dream: the human-like robot. In that movie, Dr. Rotwang transforms a simple and cold calculating robot into the body of a beautiful woman. Robots have often been depicted as metal creatures with cold steel bodies, but there is no reason why metals should be the only kind of material for construction of robots. The authors examined the issues related to applying electroactive polymers materials (EAP) to the entertainment industry. EAP are offering attractive characteristics with the potential to produce more realistic models of living creatures at significantly lower cost. This paper seeks to elucidate how EAP might infiltrate and ultimately revolutionize entertainment, showing some applicative examples.

Beschreibung: GaAs and related heterostructure charge-coupled devices (CCDs) for detector array readout multiplexer applications are described. Features of resistive-gate CCDs are compared with capacitive-gate CCDs for this application. Design examples of GaAs CCD readouts for linear and two-dimensional detector arrays with different detection methods and signal coupling schemes are described. Recent progress in two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) Al(0.3)Ga(0.7)As/GaAs resistive-gate CCDs is also presented. The 2DEG resistive-gate CCD conventional buried-channel GaAs CCD.
