Description:
Space plays an important role in many aspects of geomorphological research. With the advance of geographic information systems (GIS), computer-based tools for spatial analysis became easily accessible and a wealth of new algorithms was developed. Standard GIS tools for surface geometry, hydrology, and geostatistical analyses are very valuable in geomorphology. Furthermore, geomorphological indices such as roughness or topographic wetness assess specific geomorphological parameters. In this article we give an overview of GIS applications in geomorphology. We summarize central developments, list popular geomorphological indices, and apply them to a study area in the European Alps for discussion and illustration.
