    Description: To perform daytime measurements of the density and temperature by Rayleigh lidar, it is necessary to select the wavelength with a very narrow spectral system. This filter is composed by an interference filter and a Fabry Perot etalon. The Fabry Perot etalon is the more performent compound, and it is necessary to build a specific optic around it. The image of the entrance pupil or the field diaphragm is at the infinite and the other diaphragm is on the etalon. The optical quality of the optical system is linked to the spectral resolution of the system to optimize the reduction of the field of view. The resolution is given by the formula: R = 8(xD/Fd)exp 2 where R = lambda/delta(lambda), x = diameter of the field diaphragm, D = diameter of the reception mirror, F = focal length of the telescope, and d = useful diameter of the etalon. In the Doppler Rayleigh lidars, the PF interferometer is the main part of the experiment and the exact spectral adaptation is the most critical problem. In the spectral adaptation of interferometers, the transmittance of the system will be acceptable if the etalon is exactly adjusted to the wavelength of the laser. It is necessary to work with a monomode laser, and adjust the shift to the bandpass of the interferometer. We are working with an interferometer built with molecular optical contact. This interferometer is put in a special pressure closed chamber.

    Description: In order to study the ozone layer in the Arctic, we have to define a new optical concept for a lidar. It was necessary to build a transportable system with a large collecting surface in a minimum of volume. It was too useful to have a multichannel receptor. A description of the Emettor Receptor System, collecting system, and analysis system is provided.

    Description: The study of the ozone layer during winter and springtime in high latitude regions is a major issue in atmospheric research. For a better understanding of these problems, an important experimental campaign called EASOE (European Arctic Stratospheric Ozone Experiment) was organized by the European Community during the winter 1991-1992. Its main objective was to establish a budget of the ozone destruction processes on the whole northern hemisphere. This implied the simultaneous operation of different types of instruments located in both high and mid-latitude regions in order to study the destruction processes as well as the evolution of the ozone layer during the period of the campaign. A description will be given here of a mobile ozone lidar instrument specially designed for operation during the EASOE campaign. This system, which performs ozone measurements in the 5 to 40 km altitude range was located in Sodankyla, Finland as part of the ELSA experiment which also includes operation of another multi-wavelength lidar designed for polar stratospheric cloud measurements.
