    Description: The advanced cogeneration technology economic optimization study (ACTEOS) was undertaken to extend the results of the cogeneration technology alternatives study (CTAS). Cost comparisons were made between designs involving advanced cogeneration technologies and designs involving either conventional cogeneration technologies or not involving cogeneration. For the specific equipment cost and fuel price assumptions made, it was found that: (1) coal based cogeneration systems offered appreciable cost savings over the no cogeneration case, while systems using coal derived liquids offered no costs savings; and (2) the advanced cogeneration systems provided somewhat larger cost savings than the conventional systems. Among the issues considered in the study included: (1) temporal variations in steam and electric demands; (2) requirements for reliability/standby capacity; (3) availability of discrete equipment sizes; (4) regional variations in fuel and electricity prices; (5) off design system performance; and (6) separate demand and energy charges for purchased electricity.

    Description: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of the mean flow profiles on the instability characteristics in the near-injector region of low-density gas jets injected into high-density ambient gas mediums. To achieve this, a linear temporal stability analysis and a spatio-temporal stability analysis of a low-density round gas jet injected vertically upwards into a high-density ambient gas were performed by assuming three different sets of mean velocity and density profiles. The flow was assumed to be isothermal and locally parallel. Viscous and diffusive effects were ignored. The mean flow parameters were represented as the sum of the mean value and a small normal-mode fluctuation. A second order differential equation governing the pressure disturbance amplitude was derived from the basic conservation equations. The first set of mean velocity and density profiles assumed were those used by Monkewitz and Sohn for investigating absolute instability in hot jets. The second set of velocity and density profiles assumed for this study were the ones used by Lawson. And the third set of mean profiles included a parabolic velocity profile and a hyperbolic tangent density profile. The effects of the inhomogeneous shear layer and the Froude number (signifying the effects of gravity) on the temporal and spatio-temporal results for each set of mean profiles were delineated.     Description: X-ray polarimetry, sometimes alone, and sometimes coupled to spectral and temporal variability measurements and to imaging, allows a wealth of physical phenomena in astrophysics to be studied. X-ray polarimetry investigates the acceleration process, for example, including those typical of magnetic reconnection in solar flares, but also emission in the strong magnetic fields of neutron stars and white dwarfs. It detects scattering in asymmetric structures such as accretion disks and columns, and in the so-called molecular torus and ionization cones. In addition, it allows fundamental physics in regimes of gravity and of magnetic field intensity not accessible to experiments on the Earth to be probed. Finally, models that describe fundamental interactions (e.g. quantum gravity and the extension of the Standard Model) can be tested. We describe in this paper the X-ray Imaging Polarimetry Explorer (XIPE), proposed in June 2012 to the first ESA call for a small mission with a launch in 2017. The proposal was, unfortunately, not selected. To be compliant with this schedule, we designed the payload mostly with existing items. The XIPE proposal takes advantage of the completed phase A of POLARIX for an ASI small mission program that was cancelled, but is different in many aspects: the detectors, the presence of a solar flare polarimeter and photometer and the use of a light platform derived by a mass production for a cluster of satellites. XIPE is composed of two out of the three existing JET-X telescopes with two Gas Pixel Detectors (GPD) filled with a He-DME mixture at their focus. Two additional GPDs filled with a 3-bar Ar-DME mixture always face the Sun to detect polarization from solar flares. The Minimum Detectable Polarization of a 1 mCrab source reaches 14 in the 210 keV band in 105 s for pointed observations, and 0.6 for an X10 class solar flare in the 1535 keV energy band. The imaging capability is 24 arcsec Half Energy Width (HEW) in a Field of View of 14.7 arcmin 14.7 arcmin. The spectral resolution is 20 at 6 keV and the time resolution is 8 s. The imaging capabilities of the JET-X optics and of the GPD have been demonstrated by a recent calibration campaign at PANTER X-ray test facility of the Max-Planck-Institut fr extraterrestrische Physik (MPE, Germany). XIPE takes advantage of a low-earth equatorial orbit with Malindi as down-link station and of a Mission Operation Center (MOC) at INPE (Brazil). The data policy is organized with a Core Program that comprises three months of Science Verification Phase and 25 of net observing time in the following 2 years. A competitive Guest Observer program covers the remaining 75 of the net observing time.

    Description: In contrast to the situation observed in mammals and birds, a switching between different sex determination systems frequently occurred during the evolution of the teleost fish lineage. This might be due to a frequent turnover of sex-determining signals at the top of the sex determination cascade (master sex-determining genes in the case of genetic sex determination). Alternatively, different variations of a same master gene might decide the sex of individuals in different sex determination systems. In the medaka Oryzias latipes, a Y-specific copy of the putative transcription factor gene dmrt1 very likely corresponds to the master sex-determining gene inducing male formation [Nature 417 (2002) 559; Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 99 (2002) 11778]. This gene, alternately called dmY and dmrt1Y, has been formed by duplication of the autosomal dmrt1. In order to determine if an orthologue of dmrt1Y was also located in the sex determination region of the related platyfish Xiphophorus maculatus, Southern blot analysis was performed on genomic DNA from XY and YY males and WY and XX females using both medaka and human dmrt1 cDNA as probes. Using different restriction enzymes, no evidence for sex-specific dmrt-containing genomic fragments could be found in the platyfish. No dmrt gene could be detected by low-stringency Southern blot analysis of genomic inserts from 60 bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) clones linked to the sex-determining locus on the X and Y chromosomes. Six different groups of BAC clones containing dmrt genes were isolated from a platyfish genomic library. X. maculatus dmrt1 gene and cDNA were characterised. In adult, expression of dmrt1 was detected only in testis. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the duplication of dmrt1 that led to the formation of dmY/dmrt1Y within the medaka lineage clearly occurred after its divergence from the platyfish lineage. Hence, a dmY/dmrt1Y orthologue generated by this particular event of duplication does not correspond to the master sex-determining gene in the platyfish.

    Description: Due to the presence of genetically well-defined sex chromosomes, with a relatively restricted sex-determination region containing markers identified at the molecular level, the platyfish Xiphophorus maculatus is one of the best models for the positional cloning of a master sex-determining gene in fish. Both male and female heterogametes and three different types of sex chromosomes have been described in the platyfish, with several loci involved in pigmentation, melanoma formation, and sexual maturity closely linked to the master sex-determining locus. Using the melanoma-inducing oncogene Xmrk, its protooncogenic counterpart egfrb, as well as other X- and Y-linked molecular markers, bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) contigs have been assembled for the sex-determining region of X. maculatus, which was mapped by fluorescent in situ hybridization to the subtelomeric region of the sex chromosomes. Initial sequence analysis of these contigs revealed several gene candidates and uncovered syntenies with different mammalian and chicken autosomes, supporting an independent origin of sex chromosomes in platyfish and tetrapods. Strikingly, the sex determination region of the platyfish is very instable and frequently undergoes duplications, deletions, and transpositions. This instability might be linked to the high genetic variability affecting sex determination and other sex-linked traits in Xiphophorus.

    Description: The nature of the early terrestrial crust and how it evolved through time remains highly controversial. Whether conventional plate tectonics operated in the Hadean and early Archean and when it came into existence remains unclear. Here, we describe U-Pb ages, Hf isotope composition and trace element chemistry of 3.95–3.10 Ga old detrital zircons from the Singhbhum Craton in eastern India. The 〉3.7 Ga old zircons of this suite have crust-like Hf isotope compositions with strongly negative εHfi and their granitoid sources formed by intra-crustal reworking of a Hadean protolith that was extracted from primitive mantle at 4.4–4.5 Ga. The trace element and Hf isotope compositions of the zircons record a transition from higher Nb/Th (0.070 ± 0.010), Nb/U (0.045 ± 0.005), crust-like Hf isotope compositions, and longer crustal residence times of the protoliths prior to 3.7–3.6 Ga, to lower Nb/Th (0.032 ± 0.012), Nb/U (0.024 ± 0.009; 1σ), mantle-like Hf isotope compositions, and shorter protolith residence times post 3.7–3.6 Ga. The Nb/Th and Nb/U fractionation at 3.7 Ga seen in the detrital zircon record can be explained by transition to granitoid production at greater depths in an oceanic plateau-like regime. However, had that been the case, the crustal residence times of the protoliths of the granitoids from which the detrital zircons were sourced should have progressively increased with time, given the 〉1.1 billion years protracted history of granitoid magmatism in the craton, which is contrary to what is observed. We suggest that the changes in the granitoid chemistry recorded by the detrital zircons document a significant change in the depth of melting of the protoliths as well as in the tectonic setting of continental crust formation, and argue that it marks the transition to granitoid production from oceanic plateaus to arc-like tectonic environments. Broadly similar transitions at ca. 3.6 Ga have been documented in gneisses from the Acasta Gneiss Complex, the Jack Hills zircons and in detrital zircons from the Wyoming Province, which suggest that the end of the Eoarchean may have been marked by widespread transition in planetary tectonic regime.
