    Description: A quantitative ultrasonic technique for the nondestructive assessment of impact damage is described. The method, which involves digitizing the entire backscattered ultrasonic wave from a sample, was applied to two test panels removed from a 16-ply graphite/epoxy laminate and impacted with an aluminum ball fired at a velocity of 150 ft/sec. The results of the ultrasonic NDE were compared with the results obtained using the destructive deply technique of Freeman (1984). The NDE method provides through-the-thickness information on damage and only requires access to a single side of the material, while the deply technique gives exact information on the actual damage. Good quantitative agreement between the two techniques was obtained.

    Description: Ocean floor basalts studied from the Galapagos Ridge, FAMOUS area, Cayman Trough and Kilauea east rift contain 20-200 ppm carbon and 0.3-2.8 ppn nitrogen as sums of the vesicle-filling gases CO2 and N2 and dissolved species. The wide range of carbon contents found is due partly to the different extent of outgassing of vesicle-filling gases and partly to depth dependency of dissolved CO2 in the basalts. Sulfate commonly exists with sulfide in these basalts, and the sulfate/sulfide ratio increases with increasing water content, perhaps reflecting the higher oxidation potential in basalt melt of the higher water content.

    Description: Sample surface carbon, mantle carbon dioxide in vesicles, and mantle carbon dissolved in glasses, are the three carbon components evident in the 11 mid-oceanic basalts presently analyzed. The total carbon content may be controlled by the depth of the shallowest ridge magma chamber, and carbon isotopic fractionation accompanies magma degassing. Using He-3 and carbon data for submarine hydrothermal fluids, the present day midoceanic ridge carbon flux is approximately estimated to be 1.0 x 10 to the 13th g C/yr, requiring 8 Gyr to accumulate the earth's present crustal carbon inventory.

    Description: Ground-based optical and digital ionosonde measurements were conducted at Thule, Greenland to measure ionospheric structure and dynamics in the nighttime polar cap F layer. These observations showed the existence of large-scale (800-1000 km) plasma patches drifting in the antisunward direction during a moderately disturbed (Kp greater than or equal to 4) period. Simultaneous Dynamics Explorer (DE-B) low-altitude plasma instrument (LAPI) measurements show that these patches with peak densities of about 10 to the 6th el per cu cm are not locally produced by structured particle precipitation. The LAPI measurements show a uniform precipitation of polar rain electrons over the polar cap. The combined measurements provide a comprehensive description of patch structure and dynamics. They are produced near or equatorward of the dayside auroral zone and convect across the polar cap in the antisunward direction. Gradients within the large scale, drifting patches are subject to structuring by convective instabilities. UHF scintillation and spaced receiver measurements are used to map the resulting irregularity distribution within the patches.

    Description: Measurement of the degree of linear polarization of the residual illumination in the umbral region in different colors at intermediate levels in the atmosphere (10 to 12 km) during the total solar eclipses of May 30, 1965, and Nov. 12, 1966. The objective was to examine the polarization characteristics of light that had been scattered more than once. It is found that, in the middle of the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum (0.4 to 0.6 micron), multiply scattered light is partially linearly polarized (about 20%) at the altitudes where the measurements have been made. Results of similar ground-based measurements performed during the annular eclipse of Sept. 11, 1969, are also briefly discussed.

    Description: Research at NASA Lewis Research Center gave the opportunity to incorporate new control volumes in the Denton 3-D finite-volume time marching code. For duct flows, the new control volumes require no transverse smoothing and this allows calculations with large transverse gradients in properties without significant numerical total pressure losses. Possibilities for improving the Denton code to obtain better distributions of properties through shocks were demonstrated. Much better total pressure distributions through shocks are obtained when the interpolated effective pressure, needed to stabilize the solution procedure, is used to calculate the total pressure. This simple change largely eliminates the undershoot in total pressure down-stream of a shock. Overshoots and undershoots in total pressure can then be further reduced by a factor of 10 by adopting the effective density method, rather than the effective pressure method. Use of a Mach number dependent interpolation scheme for pressure then removes the overshoot in static pressure downstream of a shock. The stability of interpolation schemes used for the calculation of effective density is analyzed and a Mach number dependent scheme is developed, combining the advantages of the correct perfect gas equation for subsonic flow with the stability of 2-point and 3-point interpolation schemes for supersonic flow.

    Description: A series of experiments conducted in December 1979 to investigate the structure of plasma depletions in the low latitude, nighttime ionosphere is discussed. Density biteouts of about one order of magnitude in the dominant ion, O(+), are mapped to lower altitudes along magnetic field lines for comparison with 6300-A and 7774-A O I airglow depletions. Owing to the different airglow production mechanisms (dissociative recombination of O2(+) for 6300 A and radiative recombination of O(+) for 7774 A), the 6300-A depletions reflect plasma depletions near the bottomside of the F layer, while those at 7774 A are located near the peak of the layer. The O(+) biteouts map directly into the 7774-A airglow depletions in the same hemisphere and also when traced into the opposite hemisphere, which suggests magnetic flux tube alignment over north-south distances of approximately 2220 km. The 6300-A (bottomside) depletions are found to be wider in longitude than the 7774-A (F-peak) depeletions near the equatorward edge of the Appleton anomaly.
