Description: Surface latent heat fluxes are estimated in the vicinity of a rapidly deepening cyclone before and during its period of most rapid intensification. This was done with a bulk parameterization scheme and remotely sensed input data. A method is studied for estimating the difference in specific humidity between the surface and a ten meter height using the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) observed integrated water vapor field and a sea surface temperature analysis. The surface latent heat flux fields generally have estimated errors below 40 pct. south of 40 deg. N and outside the region of high integrated water vapor values associated with frontal bands. The method of estimating surface latent heat fluxes for the case study was found to be usable in most regions of the Northwest Atlantic Ocean except for those locations directly adjacent to coastlines in instances of offshore flow and in the vicinity of surface fronts.

Description: A summary of Air Force turbulence related mishaps for the last ten years of Air Force mishaps is presented from a perspective of where it has been, where it is now, and where it is going. In addition to accounts of major mishaps, a summary of what actions were taken to preclude future similar mishaps is presented. Also, a discussion of some of the things being done now and being planned for the future to prevent turbulence related mishaps is presented.

Description: With the emergence of reasonably robust, physically based rain rate algorithms designed for the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I), a unique opportunity exists to directly observe a physical component which can contribute to or be a signature of cyclone deepening (latent heat release). The emphasis of the research in this paper is to seek systematic differences in rain rate observed by the SSM/I, using the algorithm of Petty in cases of explosive and nonexplosive cyclone deepening.

Description: Failure times of software undergoing random debugging can be modelled as order statistics of independent but nonidentically distributed exponential random variables. Using this model inferences can be made about current reliability and, if debugging continues, future reliability. This model also shows the difficulty inherent in statistical verification of very highly reliable software such as that used by digital avionics in commercial aircraft.

Description: Miller and Sofer have presented a nonparametric method for estimating the failure rate of a software program. The method is based on the complete monotonicity property of the failure rate function, and uses a regression approach to obtain estimates of the current software failure rate. This completely monotone software model is extended. It is shown how it can also provide long-range predictions of future reliability growth. Preliminary testing indicates that the method is competitive with parametric approaches, while being more robust.

Description: The distribution of absolute blue magnitudes among Type Ia supernovae (SNs Ia) is studied. Supernovae were used with well determined apparent magnitudes at maximum light and parent galaxies with relative distances determined by the Tully-Fisher or Dn - sigma techniques. The mean absolute blue magnitude is given and the observational dispersion is only sigma(MB) 0.36, comparable to the expected combined errors in distance, apparent magnitude, and extinction. The mean (B-V) color at maximum light is 0.03 +/- 0.04, with a dispersion sigma(B-V) = 0.20. The Cepheid-based distance to IC 4182, the parent galaxy of the normal and unextinguished Type Ia SN 1937C, leads to a Hubble constant of H(0) + 51 +/- 12 km/s Mpc. The existence of a few SNs Ia that appear to have been reddened and dimmed by dust in their parent galaxies does not seriously compromise the use of SNs Ia as distance indicators.

Description: A sample of results from the Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) instrument aboard the Nimbus-7 satellite is compared with those obtained from analyses of First GARP Global Experiment Level III-b data collected over the South Pacific on January 10-18, 1979, when the South Pacific Convergence Zone and its accompanying cloud band were quasi-stationary features of this ocean's circulation. It is found that the patterns of Goddard Laboratory for Atmospheres precipitable water values compare well with patterns of the SMMR brightness temperature differences.
