    Description: Transmission electron microscopy has been used to study the bulk deformation characteristics of seven nickel-base superalloys tested in fatigue and creep-fatigue at 650 C. The alloys were Waspalloy, HIP Astroloy, H plus F Astroloy, H plus F Rene 95, IN 100, MERL 76, and NASA IIB-7. The amount of bulk deformation observed in all the alloys was low. In tests with inelastic strain amplitudes less than about 0.003, only some grains exhibited yielding and the majority of those had the 110 line near the tensile axis. Deformation occurred on octahedral systems for all of the alloys except MERL 76 which also showed abundant primary cube slip. Creep-fatigue cycling occasionally produced extended faults between partial dislocations, but otherwise deformation was much the same as for fatigue cycling.

    Description: A commercially available bulk 4.5 mole percent yttria-Y2O3)-partially-stabilized zirconia (PSZ) was studied by light microscopy, X-ray analysis, microhardness measurement, and fracture toughness testing. The growth of the precipitates and the phase transformations were studied as a function of aging in air at 1500 C. Aging cuves were constructed for both the as-received and the solution-annealed-and-quenched materials; the curves showed hardness peaks at 1397 and 1517 kg/sq mm, respectively. A total of twelve different types of tetragonal precipitates were found. The rectangular plate-shaped tetragonal precipitates were found to have a (110) habit plane. Grinding of the Y2O3 PSZ into powder did not cause a significant amount of metastable tetragonal precipitates to transform into the monoclinic phase, thus indicating that transformation toughening is not a significant mechanism for the material. The fracture toughness of the aged and of the unaged solution-annealed-and-quenched PSZ was found to be between 2 and 3 MN/cu m/2.

    Description: Bulk 8.0 weight percent yttria partially stabilied zirconia (PSZ) was studied by light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray analysis, microhardness testing, and fracture toughness testing. The as received PSZ contained spheroidal and grain boundary precipitates up to 4 micrometers in size. Spheroids up to 1.26 micrometers were metastable tetragonal; large spheroids were monoclinic. Grinding the PSZ into powder did not cause a significant amount of tetragonal to transform to monoclinic. This indicates that transformation toughness is not a significant mechanism in PSZ. Aging the PSZ at 1500 C caused the fine tetragonal precipitates to grow from 0.06 to 0.12 micrometers, in 250 minutes. A peak hardness of 1400 kg/sq mm was attained after 50 minutes. Solution annealing and quenching the as received PSZ eliminated the large precipitates, but fine tetragonal precipitates reformed on quenching. Aging at 1500 C caused the fine 0.02 micrometers tetragonal precipitates to grow into plates about 0.10 by 0.50 micrometers. A peak hardness of 1517 kg/sq mm was obtained after 250 minutes. On further aging, monoclinic percipitates formed along grain boundaries. The fracture toughness of the aged and unaged solution annealed and quenched PSZ was found to be between 2 and 3 MN /square root of m cubed. This range of fracture toughness is consistent with PSZ's that do not undergo transformation toughening.

    Description: A two-layer plasma-sprayed thermal barrier coating on a directionally solidified nickel-base eutectic alloy substrate was characterized prior to and after thermal cycling to 1095 C in an accelerated furnace test. The coating was comprised of an inner layer of Ni-16.4Cr-5.1Al-0.15Y (wt%) bond coat and an outer layer of ZrO2-7.9Y2O3 (wt%) thermal barrier. Characterization of the bond coat revealed that substantial amounts of yttrium and aluminum were oxidized during plasma-spraying in air. The oxidation of these elements reduced the protective capacity of the bond coat so that, on thermal exposure, severe degradation of the bond coat resulted and large amounts of nickel oxide formed. This nickel oxide was demonstrated to grow outward into the thermal barrier, which appears to have increased the stresses in the thermal barrier and contributed to its failure near the thermal barrier-bond coat interface.

    Description: The influence of orientation on the tensile and stress rupture behavior of 52 Mar-M247 single crystals was studied. Tensile tests were performed at temperatures between 23 and 1093 C; stress rupture behavior was examined between 760 and 1038 C. The mechanical behavior of the single crystals was rationalized on the basis of the Schmid factor contours for the operative slip systems and the lattice rotations which the crystals underwent during deformation. The tensile properties correlated well with the appropriate Schmid factor contours. The stress rupture lives at lower testing temperatures were greatly influenced by the lattice rotations required to produce cross slip. A unified analysis was attained for the stress rupture life data generated for the Mar-M247 single crystals at 760 and 774 C under a stress of 724 MPa and the data reported for Mar-M200 single crystals tested at 760 C under a stress of 689 MPa. Based on this analysis, the stereographic triangle was divided into several regions which were rank ordered according to stress rupture life for this temperature regime.
