    Description: This paper presents the results of an application of the semivariogram textural classifier to SIR-B data. Ford and Casey (1988) performed a visual interpretation of a SIR-B image of a tropical rain forest in Borneo in which they recognized and mapped three units of forest canopy (coastal lowland forest, tidal forest and swamp) and two units of open areas (clearcut and wetland). In this study the same image is classified using the STC in an attempt to emulate their interpretation.

    Description: A low-cost transportable earth resources ground station was built in Canada and installed to operational status at Shoe Cove, Newfoundland. The system concepts developed for this station provide timely availability of data in both photographic and digital form. The system was designed with several objectives in mind: (1) to provide a system which could receive, store and process line-scan image data from a wide variety of satellites, most especially the LANDSAT and NOAA (VHRR) series, as well as aircraft scanner data, and data from future remote sensing and meteorological satellites; (2) the system has been designed to be operated by a small staff and to produce black and white images and computer-compatible tapes (CCT's) of all relevant data; (3) the system is compact in its physical design so that it is possible to configure it as a self-contained ground station, housed in a 3 x 12 meter trailer; (4) the system is designed to process all data at real-time rates or better and is designed in a modular fashion so that it can be easily upgraded to do further processing of the data, and/or to handle new satellites and sensors.

    Description: The concept of using Parallel Distributed Processing (PDP) to enhance automated experiment monitoring and control is explored. Recent very large scale integration (VLSI) advances have made such applications an achievable goal. The PDP machine has demonstrated the ability to automatically organize stored information, handle unfamiliar and contradictory input data and perform the actions necessary. The PDP machine has demonstrated that it can perform inference and knowledge operations with greater speed and flexibility and at lower cost than traditional architectures. In applications where the rule set governing an expert system's decisions is difficult to formulate, PDP can be used to extract rules by associating the information an expert receives with the actions taken.

    Description: The composition of amorphous 'diamond-like' films made by direct low energy ion beam deposition, R.F. discharge and sputtering was determined by nuclear reaction analysis, IR spectroscopy and microcombustion chemical analysis. The nuclear reaction analysis showed very similar hydrogen depth profiles for all three types of samples. The atomic ratio of hydrogen to carbon was approximately 0.2 at the film surface and rose to approximately 1.0 at a depth of 500 A. The integrated intensity of the C-H stretching band at about 2900 per cm indicates that the amount of chemically bonded hydrogen is less than the total hydrogen content. Combustion analysis confirmed the overall atomic ratio of hydrogen to carbon determined by nuclear reaction analysis. The chemical state of the non-bonded hydrogen was not determined; however, the effective diffusion coefficient computed from the hydrogen depth profile was extremely low. This indicates either that the films are exceedingly impermeable or that the non-bonded hydrogen requires an additional activated step to leave the films, e.g., desorption or chemical reaction.

    Description: A microwave afterglow-mass spectrometer apparatus is used to determine the dissociative recombination coefficients for capture of electrons by H3(+) and H5(+) ions as a function of electron temperature. At an ion and neutral temperature of 240 K, the coefficient for H3(+) is found to vary slowly with the electron temperature at first, decreasing from 1.6 x 10 to the -7th cu cm/s at an electron temperature of 240 K to 1.2 x 10 to the -7th cu cm/s at an electron temperature of 500 K; at electron temperatures ranging from 500 to 3000 K, the coefficient falls as the reciprocal of the electron temperature. It is noted that the results, which have an uncertainty of + or - 20 percent, agree satisfactorily over the common energy range (0.03-0.36 eV) with the recombination cross sections determined in merged beam measurements by Auerbach et al. (1977). Attention is also given to the implication of the results for modeling planetary atmospheres and interstellar clouds.

    Description: The baseline experiment program is concerned with future space experiments and cover the scientific disciplines of astronomy, space physics, space biology, biomedicine and biotechnology, earth applications, materials science, and advanced technology. The experiments within each discipline are grouped into functional program elements according to experiments that support a particular area of research or investigation and experiments that impose similar or related demand on space station support systems. The experiment requirements on module subsystems, experiment operating modes and time profiles, and the role of the astronaut are discussed. Launch and rendezvous with the space station, disposal, and on-orbit operations are delineated. The operational interfaces between module and other system elements are presented and include space station and logistic system interfaces. Preliminary launch and on-orbit environmental criteria and requirements are discussed, and experiment equipment weights by functional program elements are tabulated.

    Description: RAM, a family of payload carriers that operate in conjunction with the Space Shuttle, is shown to provide flexible and economical laboratories and facilities for the conduct of manned and man-tended scientific and applications investigations in near-earth orbit. Two primary mission modes of RAM are discussed in terms of capability provided, and major advantages and constraints. The Sortie mission mode uses the Shuttle orbiter as the space platform and RAM as the scientific equipment carrier to provide a flexible and economical means for conducting short-duration manned investigations. The man-tended observatory mode uses Shuttle for delivery, periodic on-orbit update and service, and retrieval of the observatory, with RAM providing the interface with the Shuttle for servicing and the space platform functions for operation.
