    Description: The study reports observations of positron annihilation radiation from the inner region of the Galaxy which show that there are two components of the radiation: a steady, diffuse Galactic component and a variable component from discrete, presumably compact sources. The existence of the variable component is supported by the ensemble of all narrow FOV 511 keV line observations, including recent detections with OSSE. The fit of this ensemble to a time-independent source distribution can be excluded at the approximately 3-sigma level. The same ensemble, combined with the broad FOV SMM observations of Galactic 511 keV line emission, sets constraints on the Galactic distribution of the diffuse component.

    Description: The phenomenon of broad gamma ray line splitting is discussed, together with a scenario for the suppression of the blue wings of these broad lines due to the geometry of the accelerated particle interaction region. The broad and narrow gamma ray line emissions are compared taking into account the line splitting effect. It is concluded that the observed gamma ray lines from Orion are most likely broad, implying that the low energy cosmic rays which produce this line emission consist mostly of C and heavier ions. The suppression of the proton and alpha particle abundances requires acceleration conditions such as the acceleration of the ejecta of the supernovae before mixing with the interstellar medium. Similar conditions are implied by observations of the B and Be in low metallicity stars formed during the first Gyr of galactic evolution.

    Description: The theory of gamma-ray line emission from solar flares is reviewed and revised. It is shown that the line emissions at 0.5, 2.2, 4.4, and 6.1 MeV are due to positron annihilation, deuterium deexcitation following neutron capture on hydrogen, and the deexcitation of excited states in carbon and oxygen. From the observed relative line intensities it is possible to determine the spectrum of accelerated protons in the flare region. This spectrum is found to be very similar to that of charged particles from the flare observed near earth. The total number of protons at the sun is deduced from the observed absolute line intensities for various interaction models.

    Description: Observations of gamma rays from solar flares, gamma ray bursts, the Galactic center, galactic nucleosynthesis, SS433, and Cygnus X-3, and their effects on astrophysical problems are discussed. It is observed that gamma ray spectra from solar flares are applicable to the study of particle acceleration and confinement and the determination of chemical abundances in the solar atmosphere. The gamma ray lines from the compact galactic object SS433 are utilized to examine the acceleration of jets, and analysis of the gamma ray lines of Cygnus X-3 reveal that particles can be accelerated in compact sources to ultrahigh energies.

    Description: It is suggested that the distribution of separations between trench volcanos located along subduction zones reflects the depth of partial melting, and that the separation distribution for hot spot volcanoes near spreading centers provides a measure of the depth of mantle convection cells. It is further proposed that the lateral dimensions of mantle convection cells are also represented by the hot-spot separations (rather than by ridge-trench distances) and that a break in the distribution of hot spot separations at 3000 km is evidence for both whole mantle convection and a deep thermal plume origin of hot spots.

    Description: Description of the results of a preliminary study of the distribution of central peaked Martian craters based on photographs taken by Mariner 6 and 7. The study provides information about the origin of these craters and about the geological processes occurring on the surface of Mars. It is pointed out that central peaks in Martian craters in the south polar region occur more frequently than their equatorial counterparts and the peak frequency statistics and crater morphologies imply that preferential peak production has taken place.

    Description: The origin of high-energy cosmic electrons is considered. It is found that electrons of energies below 1000 GeV could have been produced by local supernovae associated with known radio remnants. At higher energies, observations of muon-poor air showers indicate the existence of electrons at 1,000,000 GeV which may have originated entirely from the supernova Vela X.

    Description: The determination of flare neutrino flux is approached from the standpoint of recent observations and theoretical results on the nuclear processes in solar flares. Attention is given to the energy spectra and total numbers of accelerated particles in flares, as well as their resulting production of beta(+)-emitting radionuclei and pions; these should be the primary sources of neutrinos. The observed 0.511 MeV line flux for the June 21, 1980 flare is compared with the expected from the number and spectrum of accelerated particles.

    Description: The time-dependent flux of high-energy neutrons discovered from the solar flare of 1980 June 21 provides a new technique for determining the total number and energy spectrum of accelerated protons and nuclei at the sun. The implications of these observations on gamma-ray emission, relativistic electron spectrum and number, proton and electron energy contents, and the location of the interaction region are also examined.
