    Description: A truly two-dimensional algorithm is created for solving the steady-state two-dimensional conservation-law problem. An overdetermined system of algebraic equations is obtained through discretization by finite-volume formulas. These equations are perturbed nonsingularly and are solved by an efficient geometrically oriented l(1) procedure. The basic algorithm and the theory for the linear case f(u) = u are presented, and computational results for the nonlinear case f(u) = sq u are also analyzed. It is noted that the l(1) procedure captures boundary shocks as well as oblige and zigzag interior shocks in bands that are one cell wide, and the solution values are accurate up to the edge of the shock.

    Description: A numerical procedure in which the Navier-Stokes equations are discretized using tightly coupled discretizations of pressure derivatives and continuity equations is used here to extend the range of known terminal velocities of gaseous bubbles in liquids well beyond that in previous investigations. Computations performed for Reynolds numbers up to 2000 and Marangoni numbers up to 1000 show only a modest variation of the scaled bubble velocity between 0.16 and 0.5. The bubble velocity is influenced more by the Marangoni number than by the Reynolds number.

    Description: Solution techniques for a class of steady-state scalar conservation laws are developed analytically. Discretization by finite-volume formulas is employed to obtain an overdetermined system of algebraic equations, which are then perturbed nonsingularly (with perturbation coefficient = epsilon) and solved using the l(1) mathematical-programming algorithm of Seneta and Steiger (1984); this approach limits the matrix bandwidth to two, so that an explicit solution can be found efficiently. It is shown that, for small values of epsilon, the l(1) solutions exhibit sharp correctly located shocks and are nonoscillatory O(epsilon) approximations of the physically relevant solutions.

    Description: Cell-centered finite differences on cells of an arbitrarily spaced grid are presently used to discretize the steady-state inviscid and nearly inviscid Burgers' equations for steady-state shocked flow in a quasi-one-dimensional nozzle. The everdetermined system of nonlinear algebraic equations thus obtained is solved by a procedure which minimizes a weighted sum of the residuals' absolute values. Numerical solutions for both viscous and inviscid problems are accurate and nonoscillatory, on grids whose abrupt mesh lengths refinements are as great as a factor of 10,000.

    Description: In the course of testing various rubidium and cesium frequency standards under operational conditions for use in NASA tracking stations, about 55 unit-years of relative frequency measurements for averaging times from 10 to 10 to the 7th power have been accumulated at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). Statistics on the behavior of rubidium and cesium standards under controlled laboratory conditions have been published, but it was not known to what extent the lesser controlled environments of NASA tracking stations affected the performance of the standards. The purpose of this report is to present estimates of the frequency stability of rubidium and cesium frequency standards under operational conditions based on the data accumulated at GSFC.

    Description: When the Macintosh computer was first released, the primary user was a computer hobbyist who typically had a significant technical background and was highly motivated to understand the internal structure and operational intricacies of the computer. In recent years the Macintosh computer has become a widely-accepted general purpose computer which is being used by an ever-increasing non-technical audience. This has lead to a large base of users which has neither the interest nor the background to understand what is happening 'behind the scenes' when the Macintosh is put to use - or what should be happening when something goes wrong. Additionally, the Macintosh itself has evolved from a simple closed design to a complete family of processor platforms and peripherals with a tremendous number of possible configurations. With the increasing popularity of the Macintosh series, software and hardware developers are producing a product for every user's need. As the complexity of configuration possibilities grows, the need for experienced or even expert knowledge is required to diagnose problems. This presents a problem to uneducated or casual users. This problem indicates a new Macintosh consumer need; that is, a diagnostic tool able to determine the problem for the user. As the volume of Macintosh products has increased, this need has also increased.

    Description: In order to obtain the physically relevant discontinuous numerical solution, the steady-state inviscid Burgers' equation is singularly perturbed through the addition of a small amount of viscosity. A 'cell-centered' finite-difference scheme is proposed which employs two points for the inviscid part and four points for the viscous one. While difficulties are experienced in the capture of interior layers centered at node points, computational results for interior layers centered between node points, and for boundary layers, exhibit accurate nonoscillatory solutions whose discontinuities are captured in one cell on both coarse and fine grids.
