    Description: Unicellular protozoans are among the oldest fossils which we can recognize from the Precambrian. Presumably, foraminiferal ancestors were among the earliest of them, but had not yet benefitted from being sheltered by a biomineralized test. During the earliest Cambrian the first agglutinating foraminifera made their first appearance in the geologic record. These “primitive” forms built their test of foreign particles held together by an organic cement. This organic cement may have been secreted by the foraminifer in cytoplasmic vacuoles as is the case with Recent agglutinating foraminifera. Yet, the capability to biomineralize calcite did not evolve until after another 60 million years when the fusulinids developed their microgranular wall. Calcitic cemented agglutinates occur even later, at the base of the Carboniferous. Thus, in the fossil record the agglutinated foraminifera occur as a twofold group with a rather distinct evolution.

    Description: During ODP Leg 123, Sites 765 and 766 were drilled to examine the tectonic evolution, sedimentary history, and paleoceanography of the Argo Abyssal Plain and lower Exmouth Plateau. At each site, the quality of magnetostratigraphic and biostratigraphic records varies because of complicating factors, such as the predominance of turbidites, the presence of condensed horizons, or deposition beneath the CCD. Based primarily on the presence of nannofossils, the base of the sedimentary section at Site 765 was dated as Tithonian. A complete Cretaceous sequence was recovered at this site, although the sedimentation rate varies markedly through the section. The Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary is represented by a condensed horizon. The condensed Cenozoic sequence at Site 765 extends from the upper Paleocene to the lower Miocene. A dramatic increase in sedimentation rate was observed in the lower Miocene, and a 480-m-thick Neogene section is present. The Neogene section is continuous, except for a minor hiatus in the lower Pliocene. The base of the sedimentary section at Site 766 is Valanginian, in agreement with the site's position on marine magnetic anomaly Mil. Valanginian to Barremian sediments are terrigenous, with variable preservation of microfossils, and younger sediments are pelagic, with abundant well-preserved microfossils. Sedimentation rate is highest in the Lower Cretaceous and decreases continually upsection. Upper Cenozoic sediments are condensed, with several hiatuses.

    Description: We live in a world of ever increasing complexity. In the 25 years since the publication of the Treatise volumes by Loeblich and Tappan (1964), the number of validly described foraminiferal genera has more than doubled from 1192 in 1964, to at least 2455 in 1988. Agglutinated foraminifera (including the proteinaceous allogromiids) occupy about 180 pages of the recently revised version (Loeblich and Tappan, 1988). From the astrorhizids to the chrysalidinids, there are now at least 624 valid agglutinated genera, nearly as many genera as in the hyaline calcareous benthic suborder Rotaliina.

    Description: Deep-water agglutinated foraminifers were examined from reddish brown claystones comprising lithologic Unit 4 of Ocean Drilling Program Holes 767B and 767C. The biostratigraphy of deep-water agglutinated foraminifers in this unit indicates an Eocene to Oligocene age. The assemblages are cosmopolitan, not endemic, and several species that are useful biostratigraphic indicators in the Atlantic and western Mediterranean region (e.g., Reticulophragmium amplectens, Reophax elongatus, Ammodiscus latus, Rzehakina epigona minima, Hormosina ovulum ovulum, and Paratrochamminoides spp.) are present in the Celebes Sea. Based on biostratigraphic correlations with the North Atlantic and Alpine-Carpathian regions, the base of the sedimentary section in Hole 767C is determined to be of early Eocene, not middle Eocene age as determined by shipboard biostratigraphic analyses. The Eocene/ Oligocene boundary is represented by a hiatus or extremely condensed interval.

    Description: Benthic foraminifers were studied in 99 samples collected from the lower 200 m of Hole 765C. The studied section ranges from the Tithonian to Aptian, and benthic foraminifers can be subdivided into five assemblages on the basis of faunal diversity and stratigraphic ranges of distinctive species. Compared with deep-water assemblages from Atlantic DSDP sites and Poland, assemblages from the Argo Abyssal Plain display a higher diversity of agglutinated forms, which comprise the autochthonous assemblages. Assemblages at the base of Hole 765C are wholly composed of agglutinated forms, reflecting deposition beneath the carbonate compensation depth (CCD). Most calcareous benthic species are found in turbidite layers, and the presence of an upper Valanginian Praedorothia praehauteriviana Assemblage may indicate deposition at or just below the CCD. The P. praehauteriviana Assemblage from Hole 765C is the temporal equivalent of similar assemblages from DSDP Holes 534A, 416A, 370, 105, and 101 in the Atlantic Ocean and Hole 306 in the Pacific Ocean. Stratigraphic ranges of cosmopolitan agglutinated species at Site 765 generally overlap with their reported ranges in the Atlantic and in the bathyal flysch sequences of the Carpathians; however, several species from Hole 765C have not been previously reported from Uppermost Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous abyssal sediments.
